Population biology of the potato tuber moth, Phthorimaea operculella (Lepidoptera: Gelechiidae), in two potato cropping systems in Israel.

The life cycle, within-field distribution, crop damage and impact of natural enemies of the potato tuber moth, Phthorimaea operculella (Zeller) were investigated in two potato cropping systems. The two systems differed in soil type (sandy vs. loess) which in turn affected the choice of cultivars, irrigation programme, insecticide application method (ground vs. aerial), and planting and harvest times. From mid-April to the end of May, almost twice as many moths were caught in pheromone traps in sandy than in loess fields. Highest infestation of tubers was found before harvest, and infestation w

Systems Biology and Multi-Omics Determinants of Response to Bladder-Preserving Trimodality Therapy in Muscle-Invasive Bladder Cancer.

Trimodality therapy (TMT)-maximal transurethral resection of bladder tumor (TURBT) followed by concurrent chemoradiotherapy-can offer oncologic outcomes comparable to radical cystectomy (RC) in carefully selected muscle-invasive bladder cancer (MIBC) patients while preserving the bladder and, possibly, the quality of life. Systematic reviews and long-term series support durable bladder-intact survival in responders, yet there is still a significant percentage of patients who exhibit incomplete response or invasive intravesical recurrence requiring salvage RC. This review covers computational g

NSAIDs trigger drug-specific response to exercise: a multi-omics systems biology analysis of a randomized crossover trial.

BACKGROUND: Non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) are widely used by athletes and those who exercise, yet their influence on the molecular responses to exercise remains unclear. Prior studies have often focused on a limited set of molecular pathways, potentially overlooking broader regulator effects of NSAIDs on skeletal muscle signaling. Therefore, we conducted a systems biology study of skeletal muscle biopsies taken before and after exercise, in combination with NSAID consumption, using transcriptomics and metabolomics, to identify differentially enriched pathways and biofunctions.…

When biology meets polarity: Toward a unified framework for sex-dependent responses to magnetic polarity in living systems.

The human body emits a bioelectromagnetic field primarily generated by the electrical activity of the heart, with additional contributions from the brain, muscles, and peripheral nerves. These endogenous fields are not isolated and can be modulated by external electromagnetic and magnetic influences. Current evidence suggests that the main mechanisms underlying such interactions include modulation of ion channels, radical pair dynamics, and ion cyclotron resonance. Several studies report sex-specific differences in responses to magnetic exposure. The main factors implicated in these difference

Systems Biology of Recombinant 2G12 and 353/11 mAb Production in CHO-K1 Cell Lines at Phosphoproteome Level.

Background: Chinese hamster ovary (CHO) cells are extensively used in the pharmaceutical industry for producing complex proteins, primarily because of their ability to perform human-like post-translational modifications. However, the efficiency of high-quality protein production can vary significantly for monoclonal antibody-producing cell lines, within the CHO host cell lines or by extrinsic factors. Methods: To investigate the complex cellular mechanisms underlying this variability, a phosphoproteomics analysis was performed using label-free quantitative liquid chromatography after a phospho

A systems biology-based mathematical model demonstrates the potential anti-stress effectiveness of a multi-nutrient botanical formulation.

Stress is an adaptive response to the stressors that adversely affects physiological and psychological health. Stress elicits HPA axis activation, resulting in cortisol release, ultimately contributing to oxidative, inflammatory, physiological and mental stress. Nutritional supplementations with antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, and stress-relieving properties are among widely preferred complementary approaches for the stress management. However, there is limited research on the potential combined impact of vitamins, minerals and natural ingredients on stress. In the present study, we have inves

Systems biology approach to understand the interplay between Bacillus anthracis and human host genes that leads to CVDs.

Humans infected with invasive Bacillus anthracis (B. anthracis) have a very poor prognosis and are at high risk for developing cardiovascular diseases (CVDs) and shock. Several bacterial elements probably have significant pathogenic roles in this pathogenic process of anthrax. In our current work, we have analysed the molecular level interactions between B. anthracis and human genes to understand the interplay during anthrax that leads to the CVDs. Our results have shown dense interactions between the functional partners in both host and the B. anthracis Gene interaction network (GIN). The fun

A Systems Biology Approach to Investigating the Interaction between Serotonin Synthesis by Tryptophan Hydroxylase and the Metabolic Homeostasis.

Obesity has become a global public health and economic problem. Obesity is a major risk factor for a number of complications, such as type 2 diabetes, cardiovascular disease, fatty liver disease, and cancer. Serotonin (5-hydroxytryptamine [5-HT]) is a biogenic monoamine that plays various roles in metabolic homeostasis. It is well known that central 5-HT regulates appetite and mood. Several 5-HT receptor agonists and selective serotonin receptor uptake inhibitors (SSRIs) have shown beneficial effects on appetite and mood control in clinics. Although several genetic polymorphisms related to 5-H
