Online anatomy education during the Covid-19 pandemic: Opinions of medical, speech therapy, and BSc Anatomy students.

With the emergence of the Covid-19 pandemic in 2020, it was difficult to predict if the "cadaveric-based (golden) standard" of teaching anatomy would be possible in the unforeseeable future. This forced traditional anatomical teaching and learning practices to be transitioned to remote online platforms. This study explored the opinions of anatomy students (n = 51), on their online learning experience of anatomy during the Covid-19 pandemic. A mixed methods approach using a descriptive, exploratory study design was conducted, by use of an online survey. The survey consisted of a six-point Liker

Survey of colleges and schools of pharmacy to determine restrictions for teaching, research, and advocacy related to contraception.

INTRODUCTION: The pharmacist's role in reproductive health is evolving. Since 46 states allow providers to refuse to provide reproductive health services, it is important to consider whether learning is impacted by institution restrictions on contraception teaching, advocacy, and research. METHODS: An electronic survey was emailed to deans of all pharmacy schools on the American Association of Colleges of Pharmacy Institutional Membership list with a request to share with faculty teaching women's health content within their curriculum. The survey collected information about contraception teac

Development of Low-Cost Tactile Neuroanatomy Learning Tools for Students With Visual-Impairment.

Visual impairment is the most common form of disability in the world and results in major challenges to the education and employment of affected individuals. It is important, therefore, to provide the best possible higher education for these individuals, not only providing the same access to theoretical contents but also training them for their future work environment. The reliance of neuroanatomy teaching on visual material creates a set of challenges for educators, a situation that is only worsened by the lack of specific neuroanatomy teaching tools for students with visual impairment. To ov

Loop electrosurgical excision procedure: an effective, inexpensive, and durable teaching model.

The effectiveness of simulation training for enhancing operative skills is well established. Here we describe the construction of a simple, low-cost model for teaching the loop electrosurgical excision procedure. Composed of common materials such as polyvinyl chloride pipe and sausages, the simulation model, shown in the accompanying figure, can be easily reproduced by other training programs. In addition, we also present an instructional video that utilizes this model to review loop electrosurgical excision procedure techniques, highlighting important steps in the procedure and briefly addres

Teaching clinical reasoning skills using an online team-based learning method.

INTRODUCTION: Clinical reasoning is a complex skill that requires a healthcare professional to apply clinical judgment, expertise, and reasoning, along with foundational knowledge, to solve complex problems in uncertain situations. This study evaluated the effectiveness of teaching Clinical Reasoning Skills (CRS) through an online Team-Based Learning (TBL) approach, using scores from a Script Concordance Test (SCT) as the main outcome measure. MATERIALS AND METHODS: This quasi-experimental study was carried out at the Orthopedic Department of Khyber Teaching Hospital, Peshawar, Pakistan, from

Development and implementation of the online undergraduate surgical teaching module at the University of KwaZulu-Natal during COVID-19.

BACKGROUND: The COVID-19 pandemic prompted the transition of all teaching and learning of final-year General Surgery students to an online platform. METHODS: A document review was conducted to determine the essential aspects of the teaching and learning programme that needed to be retained, and proposed modifications and implementation of an online surgical module. We followed the "READ" approach to analyse the documents, and the steps included readying the materials, extracting and analysing the data, and distilling the findings. RESULTS: Thirty-three curriculum and policy documents were re

Augmentative and Alternative Communication in the Classroom: Teacher Practices and Experiences.

PURPOSE: This study explored the practices and experiences of teachers who teach students using augmentative and alternative communication (AAC), more specifically, speech-generating devices (SGDs). METHOD: Nine teachers (one general education, eight special education) from four countries participated in semistructured interviews. A generic qualitative approach was taken to inductively code interview transcripts and establish descriptive themes. RESULTS: Three themes emerged from the data. The teaching experience theme captured teachers' feelings, role, collaboration with others, knowledge a

Alternative to animal experimentation in pharmacology teaching: Development and validation of an equivalent digital learning tool.

Regarding animal experiments in pharmacology teaching, ethical considerations led us to examine an alternative approach to the use of living animals. This study aimed to assess whether digital tools could replace live animal experiments in terms of motivation and knowledge acquisition. The study was carried out with students enrolled in the 5th year of the industry/research stream at the Faculty of Pharmacy of the University of Limoges. The participants were randomly assigned to groups of traditional or digital teaching methods, with the common theme of the class being the effect of a diuretic

A novel simulator model and standardized assessment tools for fine needle aspiration cytology training.

OBJECTIVES: Fine needle aspiration (FNA) is an invaluable diagnostic procedure for evaluation of lesions; however, acquisition of diagnostic material is dependent on the skill of the practitioner. We report a novel patient simulator for teaching the FNA procedure and structured assessment tools for educators and learners. METHODS: We created a novel simulator model for FNA training, employed a standardized teaching module, and assessed procedure utility in medical students. Groups of students completed training using a commercial version of the model, and underwent structured evaluation using

Innovative Teaching Approaches to Integrating Substance Use Disorder Training into Midwifery and Women's Health Nurse Practitioner Education Programs.

Substance use disorder (SUD) is the most common cause of pregnancy-associated deaths for women in Illinois. In this article, we describe how to provide multimodality education and teaching opportunities in SUD and medication for opioid use disorder, incorporate community outreach to offer new experiential clinical learning opportunities, and enhance preceptor relationships to bolster educational partnerships as an innovative approach to incorporating SUD education into midwifery programs. Our teaching efforts identify the most vulnerable communities and create an innovative, midwifery-led solu

Sound Production Treatment for Acquired Apraxia of Speech: An Examination of Dosage in Relation to Probe Performance.

Purpose This study was designed to examine the association of dosage and effects of Sound Production Treatment (SPT) for acquired apraxia of speech. Method Treatment logs and probe data from 20 speakers with apraxia of speech and aphasia were submitted to a retrospective analysis. The number of treatment sessions and teaching episodes was examined relative to (a) change in articulation accuracy above baseline performance, (b) mastery of production, and (c) maintenance. The impact of practice schedule (SPT-Blocked vs. SPT-Random) was also examined. Results The average number of treatment sessio

Integrating virtual reality to enhance remote teaching of anatomy during unprecedented times.

The COVID-19 pandemic necessitated a global paradigm shift in the teaching of human anatomy. Most institutions successfully transitioned from traditional in-person teaching methods, to various distance-learning strategies. Since virtual reality (VR) offers immersive three-dimensional (3D) experiences, this study investigated students' experiences regarding the capacity of VR to support distance-learning of anatomy. Using the VR application, 3D Organon Virtual Reality Anatomy, anatomy instructors pre-recorded learning content as 360-degree videos with live voice-over and integrated it into the

From compliance to moduli: clarifying basic mechanical properties of biological tissues.

In physiology education, terms such as compliance, distensibility, capacitance, elastance, elasticity, etc. refer to the mechanical properties of biological tissues but are often a source of confusion in teaching and learning. This article identifies three main causes underlying the confusion: 1) inconsistent interpretations of mathematically defined terms, 2) a gap between physiologic and material science terminology, and 3) a lack of illustration of the interrelationships among these terms. To address these problems, we divide these terms into three groups: terms measuring how easily a struc
