The Intersection of Traumatic Events Across Generations: PTSD Symptoms Among War Veterans With Holocaust Survivor Parents Before and Following the October 7 Terror Attack.

Previous traumatic exposure, as well as ancestral trauma, may render individuals more sensitive to subsequent trauma. The current study examined the intersection between traumatic events across generations by assessing change in post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) symptoms before and after the October 7 terror attack among Israeli war veterans while accounting for parental Holocaust exposure. A web-based random sample of 331 Yom Kippur War male veterans of European origin (Mage = 72.54, SD = 2.86) completed questionnaires in three waves before and after the October 7 attack. Multilevel model

Pathway to terrorist behaviors: The role of childhood experiences, personality traits, and ideological motivations in a sample of Iraqi prisoners.

Radicalization to terrorism is a multifaceted process with no single theory or approach to explain it. Although research has focused on understanding the process, there is still a dearth of studies that examine an empirically driven pathway to terrorism behavior. This study examines a cross-sectional sample of incarcerated men convicted of terrorism in Iraq (N = 160). A questionnaire-guided interview included adverse childhood experiences (ACEs), conduct disorder (CD), antisocial personality disorder (ASPD), religious and political ideology, views about causes of terrorism, and the severity of…

Comment on 'Posttraumatic stress disorder and depression after the 2018 Strasbourg Christmas Market terrorist attack: a comparison of exposed and non-exposed police personnel': moving towards shared methodology in terrorism-research.

In the recent article 'Post-traumatic stress disorder and depression following the 2018 Strasbourg Christmas Market terrorist attack: a comparison of exposed and non-exposed police personnel,' important insights are provided about the association between terrorism exposure and Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD). However, in our opinion, there are several methodological issues that limit the results of this study. In this letter, we discuss the problematic use of partial PTSD, the adjustment of the PCL-5 to refer only to a specific terrorist attack, and the significance of criterion A.

Report on an interagency workshop on the radiobiology of nuclear terrorism. Molecular and cellular biology dose (1-10 Sv) radiation and potential mechanisms of radiation protection (Bethesda, Maryland, December 17-18, 2001).

The events of September 11, 2001 have focused attention on the possibility of nuclear terrorism, and 1-10 Sv is arguably the dose range of biological interest, since doses in this range both pose a risk of acute effects and are potentially survivable. Because of this interest, a coalition of U.S. government agencies (NCI, DOD, DOE) and the Radiation Research Society convened a workshop in December 2001 "to focus on molecular, cellular and tissue changes that occur [at doses of 1-10 Sv] and potential mechanisms of radioprotection". A draft report of this workshop was posted on the NCI website i…

Suspected brucellosis case prompts investigation of possible bioterrorism-related activity--New Hampshire and Massachusetts, 1999.

Brucella species, particularly B. melitensis and B. suis, are potential agents of biological terrorism (1,2). This report describes the public health and law enforcement assessment of a suspected case of brucellosis in a woman, in which the atypical clinical presentation and suspicious circumstances surrounding the case raised the possibility of biological terrorism. Although the investigation did not identify evidence of biological terrorism, the safe resolution of the case illustrates the value of integrated clinical, public health, and law enforcement biological terrorism preparedness and r…

Global Characteristics of Chemical, Biological, and Radiological Poison Use in Terrorist Attacks.

BACKGROUND: Chemical, biological, and radiological (CBR) terrorism continues to be a global threat. Studies examining global and historical toxicological characteristics of CBR terrorism are lacking. METHODS: Global Terrorism Database (GTD) and RAND Database of Worldwide Terrorism Incidents (RDWTI) were searched for CBR terrorist attacks from 1970 through 2017. Events fulfilling terrorism and poisoning definitions were included. Variables of event date and location, event realization, poisonous agent type, poisoning agent, exposure route, targets, connected events, additional means of harm, d…

Pediatric Blast Trauma: A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis of Factors Associated with Mortality and Description of Injury Profiles.

INTRODUCTION: Blast polytrauma is among the most serious mechanisms of injury confronted by medical providers. There are currently no specific studies or guidelines that define risk factors for mortality in the context of pediatric blast injuries or describe pediatric blast injury profiles. OBJECTIVE: The objectives of this study were to evaluate risk factors for pediatric mortality and to describe differences in injury profiles between explosions related to terrorism versus unrelated to terrorism within the pediatric population. METHODS: A PRISMA systematic review and meta-analysis was perf…

The terrorist mind: II. Typologies, psychopathologies, and practical guidelines for investigation.

Part I of this two-part article presents a psychological and political analysis of the terrorist mind. Part II describes the major current psychological classifications and typologies of domestic and foreign terrorism. Explanations are offered in terms of our current understanding of the personality and psychopathology of terroristic violence. A heuristic model of classifying terrorism in terms of personality and psychopathology is presented. In addition to guiding further research and theory on the psychology of terrorism, this model has immediate practical application to the investigation an…

Investigation of exposure-symptom relationships in a context of recurrent violence.

Preliminary investigations of disasters, including terrorism, have identified degree of exposure as a highly reliable predictor of trauma symptoms. However, this effect has not been consistently demonstrated in studies conducted in Israel. One explanation for this may be found in the different mechanisms that influence the relationship between exposure and symptoms in situations of recurrent versus one-time terror events. We examined traumatic symptoms and response to life events as variables which may be affected by repeated exposure to violence. Students from Tel Aviv University (n=65) and t…

The "Bio-Crime Model" of Cross-Border Cooperation Among Veterinary Public Health, Justice, Law Enforcements, and Customs to Tackle the Illegal Animal Trade/Bio-Terrorism and to Prevent the Spread of Zoonotic Diseases Among Human Population.

Illegal animal trade (pet, wildlife, animal products, etc.) is an example of transnational organized crime (T.O.C.) that generates a large business with huge profit margins. This criminal activity causes several negative effects on human health (zoonoses), animal health and welfare, market protection, consumer fraud and may be used as tool of agro/bio-terrorism. Illegal animal trade can facilitate the spread of zoonoses that are defined as diseases and infections that are transmitted by vertebrate animals to man. Humans are affected by more than 1,700 known pathogens: 60% of existing human inf…

Clinical report of five adult-onset Still's disease cases and discussion on early intervention strategies.

BACKGROUND: Former studies suggest that prior exposure to adverse experiences such as violence or sexual abuse increases vulnerability to posttraumatic stress reactions in victims of subsequent trauma. However, little is known about how such a history affects responses to terror in the general adolescent population. OBJECTIVE: To explore the role of prior exposure to adverse experiences as risk factors for posttraumatic stress reactions to the Oslo Terror events. METHOD: We used data from 10,220 high school students in a large cross-sectional survey of adolescents in Norway that took place s

Anxiety, Depression and Posttraumatic Stress Disorder after Terrorist Attacks: A General Review of the Literature.

Terrorism, though not well-defined, is a violent act that has been shown to have longstanding effects on the mental health of those who witness it. The aim of this general literature review is to explore the effect that terrorism has on posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD), major depressive disorder (MDD) and anxiety disorders, as well as the bio-psycho-social determinants that mediate its impact. This paper describes the prevalence, risk factors, protective factors, common presentations and interventions identified for PTSD, depression and anxiety disorders occurring following terrorist attac…

Conflict and diarrheal and related diseases: a global analysis.

The purpose of this study was to determine the association between deaths owing to terrorism, civil war and one-sided violence from 1994-2000 and disability-adjusted life years (DALYs) attributable to diarrheal and related diseases, schistosomiasis, trachoma and the nematode infections (DSTN diseases) in 2002 among World Health Organization Member States. Deaths resulting from terrorism, civil war and one-sided violence were significantly related to DSTN DALYs across the majority of sex-age subgroups of the populace, after controlling for baseline levels of improved water/sanitation and a vari…

Particle Analysis by Scanning Electron Microscopy With Energy Dispersive X-Ray Analysis in Pulmonary Pathology Specimens From U.S. Military Service Members Deployed During the Global War on Terror 2002 to 2015.

INTRODUCTION: Between 2001 and 2015, 2.77 million U.S. military service members completed over 5 million deployments to Southwest Asia. There are concerns that deployment-related environmental exposures may be associated with adverse pulmonary health outcomes. Accurate pulmonary diagnosis often requires histopathological biopsy. These lung biopsies are amenable to chemical analysis of retained particulates using scanning electron microscopy with energy dispersive X-ray analysis (SEM/EDXA). METHOD: A retrospective review of SEM/EDXA data collected in conjunction with pathologic diagnostic cons

Second thoughts about who is first: the medical triage of violent perpetrators and their victims.

Extreme intentional and deliberate violence against innocent people, including acts of terror and school shootings, poses various ethical challenges, some related to the practice of medicine. We discuss a dilemma relating to deliberate violence, in this case the aftermath of a terror attack, in which there are multiple injured individuals, including the terror perpetrator. Normally, the priority of medical treatment is determined based on need. However, in the case of a terror attack, there is reason to question this. Should the perpetrator of extreme violence receive medical treatment on the

Chemical weapons: documented use and compounds on the horizon.

Man's inhumanity to man is expressed through a plethora of tools of modern warfare and terror. The use of chemical and biological weapons with the goals of assault, demoralisation and lethality has been documented in recent history, both on the battlefield and in urban terror against civilians. A general review of a few of the currently employed chemical weapons and biological toxins, along with a look at potential chemical weapons and tools of counter-terrorism, follows. While these weapons are fearsome elements, the dangers should be viewed in the context of the widespread availability and e…

The anthrax team: a novel teaching approach to increase anthrax and bioterrorism awareness.

A team approach to educating staff regarding anthrax and bioterrorism awareness was implemented after the acts of terrorism that began September 11, 2001. "The Anthrax Team" developed algorithms on the basis of 5 different scenarios, an educational brochure, and a PowerPoint presentation. With use of the algorithms and PowerPoint material, the team conducted informal educational sessions to increase awareness and allay fears. On the basis of the success of this educational method, the teaching process will be applied to address staff on other biologic and chemical terrorism agents.

Do Substance Use, Psychosocial Adjustment, and Sexual Experiences Vary for Dating Violence Victims Based on Type of Violent Relationships?

BACKGROUND: We examined whether substance use, psychosocial adjustment, and sexual experiences vary for teen dating violence victims by the type of violence in their relationships. We compared dating youth who reported no victimization in their relationships to those who reported being victims of intimate terrorism (dating violence involving one physically violent and controlling perpetrator) and those who reported experiencing situational couple violence (physical dating violence absent the dynamics of power and control). METHODS: This was a cross-sectional survey of 3745 dating youth from 1…
