Eight 6-9 month old calves, showing clinical signs of intermittent haemoglobinuria, even after treatment with an antipiroplasmal drug (4,4-diamidinodiazaminobenzene diaceturate), were examined for oxidative damage to their erythrocytes and the presence of hemoprotozoa in blood smears. Four calves without signs of haemoglobinuria served as controls. The blood smears from three of the eight calves contained piroplasms for Theileria annulata. Irrespective of the presence of piroplasms in their blood smears, the calves with haemoglobinuria had significantly (p < 0.01) lower haemoglobin concentrati

Changes in iron and ferritin in calves infected with Theileria sergenti were investigated to elucidate iron metabolism in animals with extravascular hemolytic anemia. During severe anemia, serum iron was remarkably elevated while the total iron-binding capacity remained relatively unchanged or decreased slightly in the infected calves, resulting in elevated transferrin saturation. The serum ferritin concentration gradually increased with the progress of anemia. The erythrocyte ferritin content drastically increased when mean corpuscular volume was elevated. The concentration of non-heme iron a

Sample pooling combined with conventional polymerase chain reaction (cPCR) is a rapid and cost-effective approach for herd-level detection of Theileria spp., particularly in resource-limited settings. Bovine theileriosis is a tick-borne protozoan disease causing major economic losses to livestock production worldwide. In Sri Lanka, particularly in Jaffna, Theileria infections threaten cattle productivity, highlighting the need for affordable and sensitive surveillance tools. This study evaluated pooled cPCR for herd-level detection of Theileria spp. in cattle from three farms in Jaffna. Sixty

BACKGROUND: Equine piroplasmosis (EP) is a tick-borne disease caused by the blood parasites Theileria equi, Theileria haneyi, and Babesia caballi transmitted primarily by hard ticks (Ixodidae). The clinical courses of EP range from asymptomatic to severe, and chronic infections for several years support the transmission among hosts.
METHODS: Over a period of two years, blood and fecal samples were taken from horses (n = 18) on a single farm in eastern Austria, starting with the first confirmed case of T. equi infection. Hard ticks (n = 1525 of Ixodes ricinus, Dermacentor reticulatus and Haema

Theileriosis is a crucial haemoprotozoan infection in small and large ruminants in tropical and subtropical countries, including India. Various pathogenic and opportunistic Theileria species influence the productivity of small ruminants. The present study aimed at molecular characterization, cladistics, and population structure analysis of fatal Theileria species infecting Gaddi breed goats in Himachal Pradesh, India. The blood samples collected (n = 10) from goats (in a flock/herd of 152 sheep and 100 goats) exhibiting clinical signs were subjected to microscopic examination. The molecular ch

Theileria parvacauses East Coast fever (ECF), one of the most important and lethal tick-borne diseases of cattle in sub-Saharan Africa. ECF is a considerable burden to the livestock industry, causing annual losses exceeding US $300 million. Currently, diagnosis of T. parva infections relies mainly on clinical signs, serology, and microscopic identification of parasites in either blood or lymph fluid samples. However, some of these tests might not indicate ongoing infection and they all lack the sensitivity to detect low-level infections. Molecular tests such as nested and quantitative PCR assa

BACKGROUND: Canine babesiosis and ehrlichiosis are tick-borne infections of great significance in South Africa. Theileriosis in dogs in South Africa is still poorly understood. Co-infection with multiple tick-borne diseases has been documented and is perceived as a common occurrence in South Africa.
OBJECTIVES: The main objective of this study was to determine the prevalence of co-infections with Ehrlichia canis or Theileria equi in dogs with babesiosis in the Eastern Cape province. There is a lack of data on canine tick-borne disease distribution in this region. Possible associations of popu

Benign theileriosis, caused by the members of the Theileria orientalis complex, can develop fatal clinical outbreaks characterized by acute respiratory manifestation in stressful conditions. This report describes the molecular diagnosis and clinical management of a recently transported buffalo calf with severe Theileria buffeli infection and associated acute pneumonia. A five-month-old male buffalo calf having an inter-state travel history three days back was presented with pyrexia, anorexia, weakness, mucoid rhinorrhoea, dyspnoea and diarrhoea from the day of procurement. The history and phys

Equine piroplasmosis (EP) is a tick-borne disease of equids caused by Theileria equi, Theileria haneyi, and Babesia caballi. EP is endemic in most tropical and subtropical regions worldwide, and there is a likelihood that it is also endemic in Portugal. This retrospective study aimed to determine the seroprevalence, prevalence, and potential risk factors of EP in our country over the past five years. A total of 3063 diagnostic test records were analysed. Results from the competitive enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (cELISA) revealed a seroprevalence of 32.7 % and 15.7 % for T. equi and B. cab

Theileria parva are intracellular protozoal parasites responsible for three disease syndromes in cattle, namely East Coast fever (ECF), Corridor disease (CD) and Zimbabwean theileriosis. The increase in reports of CD outbreaks in recent years has raised questions about the probability of adaptation of buffalo-derived T. parva strains in cattle herds adjacent to game reserves. A cross-sectional study was conducted from March 2016 to December 2018 to investigate the extent of occurrence of T. parva infections in cattle in the CD-controlled area of KwaZulu-Natal Province. Blood samples were colle

Concurrent infection with bovine leukaemia virus (BLV) and Theileria annulata was diagnosed in a Friesian calf about 6 months of age at a dairy farm at the Qassim region of central Saudi Arabia. The disease ended fatally with signs of liver and heart failure. There was anorexia, pyrexia, anaemia, generalized oedema and jaundice. Haematology showed low RBC counts, PCV percentage and haemoglobin concentration and WBC counts. Lymphocyte differential was high. Examination of blood smears stained with Giemsa's stain showed the presence of piroplasms in red blood cells. Autopsy showed enlarged lymph

The tick-borne diseases of livestock constitute a complex of several diseases with different etiological agents. Theileriosis and babesiosis belong to this complex and are severe and often fatal protozoan tick-borne diseases of ruminants worldwide. This results in high economical losses yearly in Iran. The most common diagnostic method for the identification of piroplasms in Iran is Giemsa staining of blood smear, which is unspecific, accompanied by some technical problems and, in some cases, impossible, due to the carriers. In contrast, immunostaining is more specific and can only be performe

Protozoa are responsible for considerable morbidity and mortality in domestic and companion animals. Preventing infection may involve deliberate exposure to virulent or attenuated parasites so that immunity to natural infection is established early in life. This is the basis for vaccines against theilerosis and avian coccidiosis. Vaccination may not be effective or practical with diseases, such as cryptosporidiosis, that primarily afflict the immune-compromised or individuals with an incompletely developed immune system. Strategies for combating these diseases often rely on passive immunothera

Of the many tick-borne haemoparasites of sheep and goats, three may be controlled by vaccination. A live virulent blood vaccine for Cowdria ruminantium infection (heartwater) is used widely in southern Africa in an infection and treatment procedure. A live vaccine for Babesia ovis attenuated by passage in splenectomised sheep has been used extensively in Bulgaria with good results. A live vaccine for Theileria hirci, consisting of schizonts propagated in a lymphoid cell culture and attenuated by passage, has been used successfully in the Middle East.
