Sulfite oxidase deficiencies, either caused by deficiency of the apoenzyme or the molybdenum cofactor, and ethylmalonic encephalopathy are inherited disorders that impact sulfur metabolism. These patients present with severe neurodeterioration accompanied by cerebral cortex and cerebellum abnormalities, and high thiosulfate levels in plasma and tissues, including the brain. We aimed to clarify the mechanisms of such abnormalities, so we assessed the ex vivo effects of thiosulfate administration on energetic status and oxidative stress markers in cortical and cerebellar tissues of newborn rats.

Nitric oxide (NO) mediates diverse physiological processes in living organisms. Small molecular NO donors usually lack stability and have a short half-life in human tissues, limiting the therapeutic application. The antioxidant and antiradical properties of the tetra nitrosyl iron complex with thiosulfate ligands (TNIC) were studied in vitro in mouse brain homogenates. It was found for the first time that TNIC is an effective antioxidant. The effect of TNIC on the catalytic activity of mitochondrial enzymes cytochrome c oxidase and monoamine oxidase A was studied. It was shown for the first time that TNIC is an inhibitor of the catalytic activity of cytochrome c oxidase and monoamine oxidase A in animal brain mitochondria in vitro.

In this work, a long-duration remediation agent (LRA) on hexavalent chromium (Cr(VI)) was developed using sodium thiosulfate (ST) supported by attapulgite (ATP) micro-nano networks induced through high-energy electron beam (HEEB) irradiation. Cisplatin (CDDP) is a common, highly toxic chemotherapeutic agent. This study investigates chemoprotective effects of N-acetylcysteine (NAC) and sodium thiosulfate (STS) on in vitro and in vivo CDDP toxicities. For ototoxicity studies, CDDP (6 mg/kg) was administered to rats via a retrograde carotid artery infusion.
