We report a case of 45-year-old man with true thymic hyperplasia. Three years earlier he had undergone operation for carcinoma of the floor of mouth. He had no symptoms but had been pointed out an anterior mediastinal mass on chest computed tomography (CT). Chest CT revealed a well defined solid mass in front of the ascending aorta. The mass showed sail sign. The size of this mass did not increase on a follow-up chest CT. The signal intensity of this mass was slightly inhomogeneous on chest magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). No invasion of the surround tissues was observed. Since the possibilit

Cervical thymic cysts are extremely unusual neoplasms that only rarely produce signs and symptoms of upper airway tract compromise. Less than 7% of patients initially have dyspnea or hoarseness. We report the first known case of progressive neonatal airway obstruction secondary to a rapidly enlarging cervical thymic cyst. Because one half of these benign tumors may demonstrate mediastinal extension, computed axial tomography or B-mode ultrasonography or both is recommended prior to surgical excision. Review of the literature confirms that the majority are successfully removed via a transcervic

A case of respiratory insufficiency in a five-month-old infant is reported. The distress was caused by a tumor of the anterior mediastinum. At the operation, it was found that the tumor originated in the right lobe of the thymus. The mass was totally resected and the pathologic study reported thymic tumorous mass compatible with thyoma. The patient followed an uneventful course.

Thymomas (Ts) and thymic carcinomas (TCs) are rare tumours of the mediastinum with an incidence rate of 1.7/million per year in Europe. Histological classification is based on rate of non-malignant-appearing thymic epithelial cells and proportions of lymphocytes (A, AB, B1, B2, B3, and C), while staging system concerns localisation of the involved areas. Surgery is the mainstay of treatment with a 10-year survival of 80%, 78%, 75%, and 42% for stages I, II, III and IV, respectively, with an R0 resection. Radiotherapy has a role in selected cases (stage III patients or R1-2 residual) and platin

Thymoma and thymic carcinoma are neoplasms originating from the epithelial cells of the thymus. Although these tumors should be treated according to the pathological diagnosis and the stage, they have distinct characteristics in the clinical behaviors, and therefore, should be treated separately. The standard treatment strategy has not been established because of the rarity of these tumors, but the recent accumulation of experiences provided some insights into therapeutic method for these tumors. In thymoma, Masaoka staging and completeness of surgical resection are important factors to determ

Thymomas are rare intrathoracic malignant tumors. Commonly used staging system is the Masaoka classification, based on peroperative and histopathological findings. Surgery is the cornerstone of the management of thymomas, initially being useful for precise histopathological diagnosis and staging, and in most cases ensuring the first step of the therapeutics simultaneously. After tumor stage, complete resection is the most constant and significant prognostic factor for progression-free and overall survival. Postoperative radiotherapy is recommended in incompletely resected thymomas. Completely

Thymomas are the most common tumors of the mediastinum. The introduction of multimodality treatment strategies, as well as novel approaches to the diagnosis of these tumors, has led to changes in the clinical management of thymomas. Here we review the literature for current clinical practice in the diagnosis, management, and treatment of thymomas.

Extranodal natural killer/T-cell lymphomas (ENKTCL) are rare, aggressive neoplasms primarily occurring in adults of Asian or Native American descent. Most are associated with Epstein-Barr virus (EBV) and originate in the nasopharyngeal region. We present the case of a fulminant, disseminated, non-nasal, EBV negative, seemingly de novo ENKTCL in an infant who presented with a five-day history of progressive abdominal distention, respiratory distress, irritability, non-bilious emesis, right eye proptosis, and pallor. Initial labs revealed leukocytosis, anemia and thrombocytopenia. Computerized a

Somatostatin receptors (SSTs) are widely expressed in pituitary tumors and neuroendocrine neoplasms (NENs) of different origins, i.e. the gastrointestinal tract and the thorax (lungs and thymus), thus representing a well-established target for medical treatment with SST ligands (SRLs). However, the response to SRLs is highly heterogeneous between tumors. Two main factors can contribute to this variability: (i) the differential SST expression among tumor types and (ii) the differential expression/modulation of the SST-related intracellular machinery. In this literature review, we provide an ove

Thymoma and thymic carcinoma are rare neoplasms of the mediastinum, arising from the epithelial cells of the thymus. While surgical resection is the treatment of choice in early stages, platin-based chemotherapy is mainly used in patients with advanced or metastatic disease; however, the prognosis is poor. Here we present the case of a 54 year old female patient suffering from a CD117-negative thymic carcinoma with widespread metastases. After several courses of different kinds of chemotherapy, finally these approaches failed to be effective. Thus we initiated a treatment with sorafenib, an in

BACKGROUND & AIMS: The early region of simian virus 40 (SV40) encodes 2 transforming proteins, large T (Tag) and small t antigen, that produce neuroendocrine tumors in the intestine and the pancreas when expressed in secretin cells of transgenic mice.
METHODS: Two SV40 early-region transgenes containing a deletion that eliminated expression of the small t antigen were expressed in transgenic mice under control of the secretin gene. The 2 lines of mice, one expressing the native large T antigen and the other T antigen with a mutation in its N-terminal J domain, were examined to determine which

Kaposi's sarcoma-associated herpesvirus (KSHV/HHV-8) is a novel human lymphotropic herpesvirus linked to several human neoplasms. To date, no animal model for infection by this virus has been described. We have examined the susceptibility of C.B-17 scid/scid mice implanted with human fetal thymus and liver grafts (SCID-hu Thy/Liv mice) to KSHV infection. KSHV virions were inoculated directly into the implants, and viral DNA and mRNA production was assayed using real-time quantitative polymerase chain reaction. This revealed a biphasic infection, with an early phase of lytic replication accompa
