A multilevel intervention in pediatric primary care for youth tobacco control: Outcomes of implementing an Ask, Advise, and Connect model.

Multilevel interventions in healthcare settings (e.g. Ask, Advise, and Connect; AAC) can reduce tobacco product use among adult patients: th … for preventive counseling (Advise). Providers then referred patients to an e-health evidence-based tobacco control intervention (Connect). Tobacco control outcomes were examined in the clinic population (N = 2219) and in a sample of patients (N = 388, 62% female, 39% non-White, M age = 15) over time, along with intervention engagement. Population use of tobacco …

Incorporating Intersectionality as a Framework for Equity-Minded Tobacco Control Research: A Call for Collective Action Toward a Paradigm Shift.

INTRODUCTION: To eliminate tobacco-related disparities, tobacco control research would benefit from a paradigm shift. Intersectionality, a framework pioneered by Kimberlé Crenshaw in late 1980s, has the potential to improve our understanding of why and how certain social groups are disproportionately harmed by commercial tobacco use, and improve our ability to address persistent tobacco-related health disparities. AIMS AND METHODS: In this commentary, we outline the rationale and recommendations for incorporating intersectionality into equity-minded tobacco control research. These recommendat…

A thematic content analysis of 2010-2015 state tobacco control legislation in the United States: Bill rationales and priority populations.

OBJECTIVE: Tobacco use causes numerous types of cancers, heart diseases, and chronic illnesses, and is responsible for nearly 1 in every 5 deaths in the United States (U.S.) annually. This study assessed whether tobacco control laws introduced in state legislatures between 2010 and 2015 provided a rationale for the proposed bill and/or specified priority population groups, and we then examined emerging themes in the text that did so. METHODS: Using LexisNexis® State Net®, we identified tobacco control bills introduced in all states and coded their bill rationales and population category. We t…

LCAA, a novel factor required for magnesium protoporphyrin monomethylester cyclase accumulation and feedback control of aminolevulinic acid biosynthesis in tobacco.

Low Chlorophyll Accumulation A (LCAA) antisense plants were obtained from a screen for genes whose partial down-regulation results in a strong chlorophyll deficiency in tobacco (Nicotiana tabacum). The LCAA mutants are affected in a plastid-localized protein of unknown function, which is conserved in cyanobacteria and all photosynthetic eukaryotes. They suffer from drastically reduced light-harvesting complex (LHC) contents, while the accumulation of all other photosynthetic complexes per leaf area is less affected. As the disturbed accumulation of LHC proteins could be either attributable to

Community dynamics influencing commercial tobacco control policy development on California American Indian lands: a qualitative analysis of baseline CAITIE data.

INTRODUCTION: Commercial tobacco control policies are credited with substantially decreasing the rates of commercial tobacco use among the general US population over the last few decades, yet determining the attitudes, values and beliefs that make such policies more or less appropriate for American Indian communities remains of great interest in efforts to address tobacco-related health disparities. METHODS: Through the qualitative analysis of 57 baseline interviews conducted by the CAITIE project in 2021 and 2022, we explain and explore community dynamics that favor or oppose new commercial …

Changes in self-control problems and attention problems during middle school predict alcohol, tobacco, and marijuana use during high school.

Although deficits in impulse control have been linked to adolescent use of alcohol and illicit drugs, less attention has been given to variability in change in impulse control across adolescence and whether this variability may be a signal of risk for early substance use. The goals of the current study were to examine growth in two aspects of impulse control, self-control problems and attention problems, across middle adolescence, and to test the prospective effects of level and change in these variables on levels and change over time in substance use. Data are from a community sample of 955 a

Tobacco smoking and the risk of upper aero-digestive tract cancers: A reanalysis of case-control studies using spline models.

Although tobacco smoking has long been recognized as a major risk factor for cancer of the upper aero-digestive tract (UADT, i.e., oral cavity, pharynx, larynx, and oesophagus), very few studies have provided estimates of the effect of very low tobacco consumption. Step-functions have been the common statistical methods for risk estimates, but the choice of reference category and of interval cutpoints influence the results, especially when data are sparse. In the present analysis, the dose-response relationship between UADT cancers and tobacco smoking was evaluated through logistic regression

Constitutive E2F expression in tobacco plants exhibits altered cell cycle control and morphological change in a cell type-specific manner.

The E2F family plays a pivotal role in cell cycle control and is conserved among plants and animals, but not in fungi. This provides for the possibility that the E2F family was integrated during the development of higher organisms, but little is known about this. We examined the effect of E2F ectopically expressed in transgenic tobacco (Nicotiana tabacum) plants on growth and development using E2Fa (AtE2F3) and DPa from Arabidopsis. E2Fa-DPa double transgenic lines exhibited altered phenotypes with curled leaves, round shaped petals, and shortened pistils. In mature but not immature leaves of

Effectiveness of a consultation intervention to promote tobacco control policies in Northwest Indian tribes: integrating experimental evaluation and service delivery.

A quasi-experimental replication of an intervention for promoting tobacco control policies in Northwest Indian tribes is described and the process of intervention including issues of collaboration among research institutions and Indian organizations is discussed. The policy intervention was evaluated using a pretest-posttest design wherein 20 tribes that had served as wait-list controls now received the intervention. The intervention comprised a tribal representative attending a kickoff orientation; follow-up visits to the tribes; distribution of tobacco policy workbooks; and phone call consul…

Randomized Controlled Trial of a Text-Based Smokeless Tobacco Cessation Intervention for Rural and Medically Underserved Communities.

INTRODUCTION: Smokeless tobacco use remains prevalent in rural and medically underserved populations, leading to increased rates of tobacco-related cancers and chronic disease. While access to effective cessation programs is limited, text-based interventions may offer a delivery approach with broad reach. This two-armed randomized control trial (RCT) assessed the efficacy of #EnufSnuff.TXT, a text-based smokeless tobacco cessation intervention, in rural and medically underserved communities. AIMS AND METHODS: We conducted a two-arm RCT assessing #EnufSnuff.TXT, a text-based scheduled reductio
