Oral findings in adults with osteogenesis imperfecta.

This paper describes oral findings in an adult population with osteogenesis imperfecta (OI) in Norway (n=94). All participants underwent a structured interview and an oral examination. Panoramic radiographs were analyzed. The findings were compared with data from other Nordic epidemiological studies. Seventeen individuals (19%) had clinical signs of dentinogenesis imperfecta (DI). Persons with OI had twice as many missing teeth as the general population, and the number of endodontically treated teeth was higher than in the general population. All persons in the study had an acceptable state of

The effect of desensitizing dentifrices on dentin wear and tubule occlusion.

PURPOSE: To evaluate the effect of desensitizing dentifrices on dentin erosive wear, using a 5-day erosion-abrasion-remineralization cycling model. The effect of the dentifrices on dentin's tubule occlusion was also investigated. METHODS: 30 samples of root dentin were randomly divided into three groups (n = 10): (1) Colgate Total 12 Clean Mint (control, 1,450 ppm F); (2) Colgate Sensitive Pro-Relief (1,450 ppm F, Pro-Argin); and (3) Sensodyne Repair&Protect (1,450 ppm F, Novamin). Erosion was performed with a cola drink, for 5 minutes, 4x/day. Toothbrushing with the slurry dentifrices (1:2)

Dental and temporomandibular joint pathology of the North American river otter (Lontra canadensis).

Museum skull specimens from 165 North American river otters (Lontra canadensis) from Alaska, USA, were analysed systematically using an established protocol designed for examination of mammalian dentition. The study population was collected from 1956 to 2012 and comprised a similar proportion of males (n = 82, 49.7%) and females (n = 72, 43.6%). Eleven animals were of unknown sex. The study group incorporated a higher proportion of skeletally mature adults (n = 128, 78.5%) compared to young adults. As with many other mammalian species, the most common types of pathology in this species were pe

[Aligners: review of their chemical components, recycling, mechanical properties and therapeutic needs - Part 1].

INTRODUCTION: The aligner is a thermoformed plastic device composed of various chemical components: polyurethane, polyethylene terephthalate glycol, polypropylene… All these plastics must be sufficiently resistant to abrasion and translucent for aesthetic purposes, but their solubility to salivary enzymes, insertion-disinsertion fatigue and recyclability vary according to material. From an orthodontic point of view, they must facilitate tooth movement. However, their behavior differs from that of orthodontic archwires: their Young's modulus, resilience and unloading curve are distinct, resulti

On the cutting edge of organ renewal: Identification, regulation, and evolution of incisor stem cells.

The rodent incisor is one of a number of organs that grow continuously throughout the life of an animal. Continuous growth of the incisor arose as an evolutionary adaptation to compensate for abrasion at the distal end of the tooth. The sustained turnover of cells that deposit the mineralized dental tissues is made possible by epithelial and mesenchymal stem cells residing at the proximal end of the incisor. A complex network of signaling pathways and transcription factors regulates the formation, maintenance, and differentiation of these stem cells during development and throughout adulthood.

Oral changes associated with tobacco use.

Tobacco is a delivery system for the addictive agent nicotine. The dental profession is encouraged to perform oral examinations that focus on oral cancer detection, but other oral changes occur with tobacco use. The oral mucosa is composed of stratified squamous epithelium and masticatory/keratinized (hard palate, dorsum of the tongue, and keratinized gingival) and lining mucosa (floor of the mouth, ventrolateral surface of the tongue, soft palate complex, labial vestibule, and buccal mucosa). Tobacco use affects the surface epithelium, resulting in changes in the appearance of the tissues. Th

Assessment of age-at-death from mandibular molar attrition in medieval Danes.

Stages of occlusal attrition of the permanent mandibular molars were recorded in 235 Danish medieval skulls, 52 of which were in various states of mixed dentition. For the first and second molar, ages at emergence and ages at occurrence of the earlier stages of attrition were estimated from the mixed dentitions, on the assumptions 1) that the age at eruption of a given number of permanent teeth was similar in medieval and contemporary Danish children, and 2) that the rate of attrition was similar for the first and second molars. Estimation of ages at occurrence of the later attrition stages an

[Tooth diseases in the medieval population of Gracanica near Valjevo].

The analyses of the pattern of dental disease in the Late Medieval Serbian population from cemetery excavations in the archaeological site Grachanica were based on the study of tooth wear, ante-mortem tooth loss, caries, hypoplasia, alveolar resorption, abscesses and calculus. The total sample of all available skeletons with almost complete permanent dentition numbers 45 individuals. Dental sample comprises 178 maxillary teeth and 337 mandibular teeth. The presence of dental caries was scored taking into consideration the size of the lesion (four degrees) and its position on the tooth. The deg

Location of the Wear, Interdisciplinary Workflow and Therapeutic Approach for Tooth Wear: LIT Classification.

OBJECTIVE: This article presents a guide for the rehabilitation of patients with dental wear using a minimally invasive approach. It provides a structured treatment sequence based on the location and extent of wear, the disciplines involved, and the therapeutic approach. The LIT classification establishes a relationship between the magnitude of the lesion and the appropriate type and material of restoration. OVERVIEW: Tooth wear (TW) is a progressive, non-carious loss of dental structure caused by erosion, attrition, and abrasion, commonly affecting young patients. Its multifactorial origin a

Oral and Dental Examination Findings in Beech Martens (Martes foina).

Detailed clinical and radiographical descriptions of oral/dental pathology in the beech marten (Martes foina) are lacking. In the present study, skulls of M. foina from a museum collection (n = 109) were examined macroscopically according to predefined criteria and full-mouth dental radiographs were obtained. Occlusion was diagnosed as 'scissor bite' in 22.5% of evaluated skulls, 77% of evaluated skulls showed 'level bite' of incisors and 9.2% of evaluated skulls had 'open bites'. In three skulls, class III malocclusion was diagnosed. Linguoversion of the mandibular second incisor teeth was no

Applications for direct composite restorations in orthodontics.

BACKGROUND AND AIM: Besides prosthetic and indirect, laboratory-produced restorations, the focus of dental therapy is increasingly on restorative measures and direct restorations as minimally invasive treatment concepts. Thus, the use of direct composite restorations with modern restorative materials for the shaping and recontouring of teeth in combination with orthodontic treatment offers a diversified, extensive sphere of application. The aim of the study was to demonstrate applications for direct composite restorations with reference to selected cases. MATERIAL AND METHODS: The composites

Prevalence and distribution of dental caries in a late medieval population in Finland.

The aim was to document the late medieval material and to compare the results with findings in other medieval populations and present-day Finns. The sample consisted of the remains of 410 individuals and included 4581 permanent and 600 deciduous teeth. Age determination was based on the stage of dental development and on the attrition pattern in the molar region. Scoring the presence and location of caries was done visually with the aid of a dental probe. In the younger age groups, caries was most prevalent in the occlusal fissures, but the proportion of cavities at these sites declined with a

Understanding and managing dentin hypersensitivity.

Dental hygienists frequently encounter clients who present with one or several sensitive teeth. These clients often rely on the dental hygienist to help determine the cause and to provide supportive treatment to relieve their discomfort. Therefore, it is essential for dental hygienists to fully understand the complexity of dentin sensitivity, be well informed about treatment approaches, and have an appreciation of the difficulties inherent in designing and conducting clinical hypersensitivity trials. Difficulties in designing hypersensitivity research have precluded a definitive answer concern
