Trauma-Induced Stress Distribution in Primary Incisors Restored With Preformed Zirconia Crowns: 3D Finite Element Analysis.

BACKGROUND/AIMS: Preformed zirconia crowns have emerged as the preferred choice for restoring damaged primary incisors. However, they differ from natural teeth in their biophysical properties and can potentially alter the overall response of crowned teeth to a traumatic load. This in silico study aimed to compare the response of three different traumatic loading conditions for the (i) natural (M1) and (ii) zirconia-restored tooth models (M2) models. METHODOLOGY: A 3D dynamic finite element (FE) analysis was performed, and minimum dynamic loads required for fracture and coronal portion disjunc

Physicochemical evaluation of pediatric liquid medicines in Ghana: implications for cariogenicity and erosive potential.

BACKGROUND: Pediatric liquid medicines are indispensable and widely used in childhood disease management, but often contain fermentable sugars and acidic excipients that may increase the risk of dental caries and tooth erosion. This study conducted a physicochemical evaluation of pediatric liquid medicines marketed in Ghana to determine their potential contribution to dental caries and tooth erosion, conditions associated with acidic and sugar-containing formulations. METHODS: Thirty pediatric liquid medicines across six therapeutic classes (analgesics, antitussives, antihistamines, antibioti…

Examining the prevalence and characteristics of abfractionlike cervical lesions in a population of U.S. veterans.

BACKGROUND: Abfraction is believed to be caused by biomechanical loading forces. It may be due to flexure and ultimate fatigue of tooth tissues that occur away from the point of occlusal loading. Other possible causes of cervical lesions include toothbrush abrasion and erosion. The purpose of this study was to investigate the characteristics and prevalence of abfraction-like lesions in a population of U.S. veterans. METHODS: The authors evaluated 103 teeth with noncarious cervical lesions in 32 subjects and characterized them based on the surface on which the lesion was located, history of to

Influence of Toothbrushing on the Antierosive Effect of Film-Forming Agents.

This study evaluated the influence of toothbrushing on the antierosive effect of solutions containing sodium fluoride (225 ppm/F), stannous chloride (800 ppm/Sn), sodium linear polyphosphate (2%/LPP), and their combinations, and deionized water as negative control (C). Solutions were tested in a 5-day erosion-remineralization-abrasion cycling model, using enamel and dentin specimens (n = 8). Erosion was performed 6 times/day for 5 min, exposure to the test solutions 3 times/day for 2min, and toothbrushing (or not) with toothpaste slurry 2 times/day for 2 min (45 strokes). Surface loss (SL) was

Risk indicators for dental erosive wear among 18-yr-old subjects in Oslo, Norway.

The aim was to investigate risk indicators associated with dental erosive wear among 18-yr-old subjects in Oslo, Norway. Of 3,206 adolescents invited to participate in a screening examination for erosive wear, 1,456 were examined (giving a response rate of 45%). As part of the examination all participants completed a self-administered questionnaire. Associations between the presence of erosive lesions and the possible risk indicators were assessed by logistic regression analyses, taking into account the hierarchical relationships between the independent variables. Of all 18-yr-old subjects exa

[Risks and side effects of periodontitis therapy. Focus on restorative possibilities for improving esthetic defects].

BACKGROUND: Keratocystic odontogenic tumours (KCOT) are benign neoplasia of dentogenic origin and have a high relapse rate. Various invasive treatment methods (decompression, marsupialisation, enucleation, enucleation with adjunctive therapy such as scraping out of the bone cavity, Carnoy's solution or cryotherapy, mandibular resection) have been described for the treatment of KCOT. There is no common opinion on the best kind of treatment. Most of the articles in the literature report on a follow-up period of 5-7 years, but relapses have been described even after longer periods of time. This a
