Tooth eruption is a complex phenomenon that involves numerous biologic activities of the bone and the soft tissue surrounding teeth. While the exact mechanisms of eruption are not clearly understood, numerous experiments of nature, including many of the inborn errors of metabolism, should prove useful in their study. Nutritional studies may also prove useful, but will always be problematic [56]. Studies on endocrinologic changes such as puberty, pregnancy, menopause, and diseases such as diabetes, have already shown that the periodontium may not be able to accommodate to changes in the body's

Variety of clinical complications occurs due to the presence of supernumerary teeth, especially mesiodens. It may result in impaction of one or both central incisors which in turn may lead to a variety of malocclusions. Timely intervention not only prevents malocclusion but also the time taken for corrective orthodontics. A complete case report of developing mesiodens' tooth germ resulting in malocclusion including treatment in 1½ year period is presented.

After addition of ethanol to the ordinary fodder of pregnant mini-pigs, ultrastructural changes were found in secretory ameloblasts from tooth germs of their mid-term fetuses. Compared with controls, many mitochondria showed abnormal shape and size, and some exhibited deposition of paracrystalline material in the matrix. An abnormal deposition of stippled material intercellularly was also observed. These changes were interpreted as signs of an abnormal secretory function.

Tooth loss remains a major unmet clinical challenge, and current prosthetic approaches cannot restore the biological complexity, sensory fun … ization, and periodontal attachment. Second, we summarize emerging tooth organoid and bioengineered tooth germ technologies that recapitulate epithelial-mesenchymal interactions and enable controlled reconstruction of dentin-pulp and periodontal compartments for modeling human odontogenesis. Third, we highlight molecular regulation-driven therapeutic strateg …

Erupting teeth are some of the oldest witnesses of developmental processes in the vertebrate fossil record and provide an important resource … ts that developing mosasaur teeth developed within the walls of resorption pits similar to varanoid tooth germs and unlike developing snake teeth which are surrounded by fibrous connective tissue integuments. Finally, mosasaurs featured pseudo-thecodont tooth implantation with teeth anchored within a socket of mineralized tissue by means of a mineralized per …

Diet and fluoride can modify tooth-germ development. In many morphological and biochemical studies malnutrition was shown to impair odontogenesis. However, quantitative observations of the morphological changes implemented by underfeeding and fluoride are still scanty. The aim of the study was to assess stereologically the enamel and dentin deposition in tooth-germ of 14-day-old rat pups derived from dams fed with deficient diet and given water without or with low (10 mg/l) and high (110 mg/l) doses of natrium fluoride, starting from the 13th day of pregnancy. The volume fractions of ameloblas

This study describes the distribution of type 1 and type 2 blood group carbohydrate chains in human normal and pathological odontogenic epithelia and in epithelia of human oral mucosa. Odontogenic epithelium was examined from 12 fetal tooth germs, 25 ameloblastomas, 13 odontogenic keratocysts, 13 follicular cysts and 13 radicular cysts. Oral mucosal epithelia was studied from 12 fetuses and 10 adults. Cell surface carbohydrates were detected using antibodies with reactivity for the blood group antigens A, B, type 1 chain Lea and type 2 chain H by an immunofluorescence technique. The expression…

PURPOSE: To observe and analyze the gene expression of latent TGF-β binding protein-3(LTBP-3) in mice first mandibular molars during tooth eruption period.
METHODS: The first mandibular molar germs of KM mice, from postnatal 1.5 to 9.5 days, were dissected. Anatomical microscope was used to observe and separate dental follicles of each time-point. After total RNA extracted from separated dental follicles of the first mandibular molars, reverse transcription-polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR) was performed using LTBP-3 specific primers to detect its gene expression. Then densitometry analysis

Traumatic dental injury (TDI) in deciduous teeth can affect itself and subsequent dentition due to its close anatomical relationship with the permanent germ. Besides, it can have psychologically undesirable effects on children and their parents and impact their Oral Health-Related Quality of Life (OHRQoL). In this case report, we aimed to describe a TDI in primary dentition that presented sequel on primary and on permanent dentition as well to describe the impact on OHRQoL after 4 years of follow-up. A 4-year-old boy was referred to the Dental Trauma Care Program (DTCP) six months after an acc

The case of a 12-year-old girl is reported, whose pretreatment radiograph demonstrated agenesis of two premolars and a canine and slow development of the contralateral premolars. A follow-up radiograph taken 1 year later showed initial mineralization of a tooth germ in the site of one of the apparently missing premolars. The cause, diagnosis, and treatment planning implications of delayed mineralization and slow development of second premolars are discussed with reference to the literature.

BACKGROUND: The matrix metalloproteinases (MMPs) are a family of closely related enzymes, the principal members being the collagenases, gela … synthesis continued in the established synchondrosis. MMPs and TIMP-1 were also documented in early tooth germs and in Meckel's cartilage.
CONCLUSIONS: These data document a prominent role for MMPs, and in particular gelatinase-A, in mediating matrix degradation during osteogenesis. Their detection in tooth germs and Meckel's cartilage further indicates a r …

Fusion is a rare developmental anomaly characterized by the union of two adjacent tooth germs during the morphodifferentiation stage of tooth formation, resulting in a single enlarged tooth. Its prevalence ranges from 0.4% to 0.9% in the primary dentition and approximately 0.2% in the permanent dentition. Unilateral fusion is more commonly observed in the primary dentition compared to the permanent dentition. Bilateral fusion in permanent teeth is extremely rare, with a reported prevalence of only 0.05%, most frequently affecting the incisors. Bilateral fusion involving the mandibular permanen…

Claudin-16 protein (CLDN16) is a component of tight junctions (TJ) with a restrictive distribution so far demonstrated mainly in the kidney. Here, we demonstrate the expression of CLDN16 also in the tooth germ and show that claudin-16 gene (CLDN16) mutations result in amelogenesis imperfecta (AI) in the 5 studied patients with familial hypomagnesemia with hypercalciuria and nephrocalcinosis (FHHNC). To investigate the role of CLDN16 in tooth formation, we studied a murine model of FHHNC and showed that CLDN16 deficiency led to altered secretory ameloblast TJ structure, lowering of extracellula…

BMP signaling plays crucial roles in the development of many organs, including the tooth. Equally important is BMP signaling homeostasis, as … 11.5, but begin to fuse at E12.5, coupling with elevated cell proliferation rates in the developing tooth germs. We further found that Chordin and Gremlin, two other BMP antagonists, are co-expressed with Noggin in the developing lower incisor and molar teeth. These observations indicate the importance of BMP signaling homeostasis, and suggest a functional r …

In this study we examined the possible inductive role of the dental papilla from polyphyodont lizard tooth germs. Flank skin sheets of quail ectoderm enzymatically separated from dermal tissue were recombined with lizard tooth papillae and placed on semisolid medium and cultured for 2 days. Subsequently, the recombinants were removed and placed on the chorioallantoic membrane of chick hosts and incubated for 6 days. After this period of 8 days in explant, control tissues differentiated according to their own phenotypes. Lizard dental papilla alone differentiated as fibroblasts. Quail flank ski…

Many cultures present several intriguing ethnic dental practices. Therefore, in a multiethnic society, health care professionals have to be attuned to the patients' cultural values and traditions because they impact their attitude in seeking care and the implementation of the professionals' recommendations. Before seeking medical or dental care in the formal health system, families may rely first on an elder or healer for advice and interventions. In East Africa, the unerupted primary canines may be extracted in the first days or months of life because it is believed that they cause persistent
