Three human replantation cases are presented wherein the results are in accord with the literature concerning inflammatory resorption and calcium hydroxide therapy. The cases unintentionally simulate a designed experiment wherein the control case received no treatment and the other 2 were subjected to independent variables such as obturation in the hand and the timing of the calcium hydroxide therapy. The untreated case resulted in loss of the tooth, while manipulation of variables in the other two resulted in retention.

Ankylotic root resorption is a serious complication following traumatic dental injuries. The aetiology of root resorption includes acute injury to the cementum and periodontal ligament, and subsequent biological processes that propagate the harm. The aim of the present paper is to present a structured treatment protocol for teeth that have experienced trauma and are at risk of developing ankylotic root resorption, followed by a decoronation protocol for situations in which ankylotic root resorption developed. This protocol provides a structured road map from the primary dental trauma, through

Dentoalveolar trauma, very frequent during childhood and adolescence, generally results in tooth fracture and/or partial or total luxation. Management of the pulpal and periodontal aspects of these traumatic cases is complex. The prognosis is improved if treatment is initiated promptly. Multidisciplinary management of these situations and regular patient follow-up make it possible to detect complications quickly and take the necessary action to maintain the teeth as long as possible in a healthy periodontal environment that allows harmonious development and the application of appropriate treat

Diagnosis of dental accidents is based on patient history, clinical examination and imaging. A completely avulsed tooth should immediately be reimplanted, and a dislodged tooth urgently repositioned to the original position. Avulsed primary teeth will never be reimplanted, and primary teeth of children under three years are not repositioned. Furthermore, fractures of the alveolar process and various soft tissue injuries but not dental fractures require urgent treatment. All dental accident patients should be referred to dental consultation for further examinations and treatment.

Although orthodontic repositioning of impacted teeth is widely used, the treatment has its limitations. Autotransplantation is an alternative therapy that may be used in selected cases of severe impaction or when orthodontic repositioning is unsuccessful. Two case reports are presented to illustrate the use of the technique in patients with severely impacted canines. Indications and limitations are discussed.

Teeth with traumatic crown-root fractures extending subgingivally and involving the entire width of the tooth may have problems in endodontic isolation, periodontal maintenance, and restoration. A number of techniques, such as crown lengthening, and orthodontic or surgical extrusion, have been described for treatment of crown-root fractures. However, all of these techniques have limitations in terms of the extended time required for treatment, cost, and esthetic considerations. Intra-alveolar transplantation is an alternative treatment option in the management of complicated crown-root fractur

INTRODUCTION: An avulsion injury is a serious trauma to pulp and periodontal tissues. After avulsion and replantation, teeth are at risk of infection and root resorption, which may affect treatment outcome and survival rate. Thus, the purpose of this systematic review was to evaluate the incidence of root resorption after the replantation of avulsed teeth.
METHODS: Two reviewers searched 7 electronic databases for observational studies involving human subjects that evaluated the incidence of root resorption after tooth avulsion. Risk of bias (RoB) was evaluated using the Meta-Analysis of Stat

BACKGROUND/AIM: The high rate of root resorption resulting from tooth replantation represents a serious clinical problem. In order to prevent ankylosis and replacement resorption, the contemporary literature highlights the importance of using a flexible stabilization for traumatized teeth. For this purpose, orthodontic devices may be promising for obtaining a better prognosis and periodontal repair. The aim of this study was to evaluate the effect of an active splinting protocol with controlled force in dog's teeth following replantation.
MATERIAL AND METHODS: Sixty premolar roots from three …

A 21-year-old Chinese male patient presented to an urban dental clinic with a transplanted molar, which had been removed from a human cadaver. The tooth was in occlusal function for three years, stable, and without mobility. Radiographs of the tooth showed root resorption and apparent ankylosis. Individual transplantation of human teeth has been considered surgical dental treatment of an empirical nature for centuries. Two types of human tooth transplantation are usually considered in the dental literature. An allotransplantation or allograft is a transplantation of tissue (tooth) between diff

BACKGROUND/PURPOSE: At present, there are no recognized guidelines or consensus for the treatment strategy of the asymptomatic tooth with external root resorption caused by an embedded tooth (et-ERR). Most clinicians would like prophylactic or concomitant root canal therapy (RCT) along with the extraction of the embedded tooth. The purpose of this study was to report the prognosis of external root resorption (ERR) and investigate the possibility to preserve the vital pulp of ERR tooth.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: The patients who had asymptomatic et-ERR teeth were included. After extraction of the

The aim of this report was to evaluate the outcome of autotransplantation or replantation of cryopreserved teeth clinically and radiographically. Donor teeth were slowly frozen in a controlled-rate freezer using 5% dimethylsulfoxide (DMSO) and 6% hydroxyethyl starch (HES) as protectants. Seven cryopreserved teeth, with duration of storage ranging from 4 to 36 months, were autotransplanted or replanted at Niigata University Medical and Dental Hospital. Endodontic treatment involving root canal debridement followed by interim root canal filling with calcium hydroxide was started 3 weeks after th

BACKGROUND AND OVERVIEW: The term "fracture necrosis" has been used to describe the condition found in a minimally restored tooth without a history of trauma when the suspected etiology for the loss of pulpal vitality is a crown-originating fracture. Teeth with fracture necrosis have a poor prognosis, and, when accompanied by characteristic radiographic findings, extraction may be considered the primary treatment option.
CASE DESCRIPTIONS: Two adult men with crown-originating fractures and suspected fracture necrosis had localized periodontal bone and attachment loss associated with severe pa

AIM: To present the successful treatment of a vertically fractured tooth by intentional re-plantation after root canal treatment and repair with an adhesive resin.
SUMMARY: Vertical root fracture is a challenging problem in respect of diagnosis and management options. In this case, a vertically fractured maxillary premolar was treated by intentional re-plantation after repairing it with 4-Methacryloxyethyl trimellitate anhyride/methacrylate-tri-n-butyl borane (4-META/MMA-TBB) resin cement. At the 36-month follow-up, the tooth was asymptomatic, radiographically sound with reduced deep periodon

A case report of severe external inflammatory root resorption is presented. The patient reported with a complaint of increased tooth mobility after avulsion and replantation. The case was treated with full root canal obturation with mineral trioxide aggregate. A 48 month follow up review showed arrest of root resorption with satisfactory clinical results. This article discusses the aetiology of inflammatory root resorption and the use of the latest root canal obturation materials in improving healing outcomes.

PURPOSE: Dental injuries (DIs) are associated with facial fractures, particularly mandibular fractures. As paediatric mandibular fractures have special features, we sought to clarify the occurrence and types of DIs among this patient group. We assessed how age, injury type, and fracture location affects the occurrence of DIs and thereby defined which patients are most susceptible.
METHODS: This retrospective study included patients < 18 years with a recent mandibular fracture. Predictor variables were gender, age group, mechanism of injury, type of mandibular fracture, and other associated fa

BACKGROUND: Avulsion of permanent front teeth is a rare accident, mostly affecting children between seven and nine years of age. Replanted and splinted, these teeth often develop inflammation, severe resorption or ankylosis affecting alveolar bone development and have to be extracted sooner or later.
OBJECTIVES: The purpose of this study was to evaluate different therapy concepts to create a structured concept for the treatment of avulsions.
RESULTS: Based on existing therapy concepts, a concept for different initial conditions (dry time, age, growth, tooth, hard and soft tissues) was develo
