Gender recognition and health rights vis-à-vis reproductive justice: Exploring the experiences of transmasculine persons in India.

BACKGROUND: The narratives of trans women dominate the discourse on 'trans rights' in India, thereby marginalizing transmasculine identities … ndividuals. The recent enactment of India's ART Bill of 2008 and the Surrogacy Bill of 2016 and the Transgender Persons Act, 2019 has further reinforced this conviction. PURPOSE: The study aimed to explore trans men's experiences of poor healthcare facilities and reproductive (in)justice shaped by India's recent legislations. METHOD: Comprehensive searches were per …

Gender Identity 5 Years After Social Transition.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Concerns about early childhood social transitions among transgender youth include that these youth may later change their gender identification (ie, retransition), a process that could be distressing. The current study aimed to provide the first estimate of retransitioning and to report the current gender identities of youth an average of 5 years after their initial social transitions. METHODS: The current study examined the rate of retransition and current gender identities of 317 initially transgender youth (208 transgender girls, 109 transgender boys; M = 8.1 yea

The Impact of a Breast Cancer Risk Assessment on the Decision for Gender-Affirming Chest Masculinization Surgery in Transgender and Gender-Diverse Individuals: A Pilot Single-Arm Educational Intervention Trial.

BACKGROUND: Persons assigned female or intersex at birth and identify as transgender and/or gender-diverse (TGD) may undergo gender-affirming chest masculinization surgery (GACMS); however, GACMS is not considered equivalent to risk-reducing mastectomies (RRM). This study aimed to estimate the prevalence of elevated breast cancer (BC) risk in TGD persons, compare self-perceived versus calculated risk, and determine how risk impacts the decision for GACMS versus RRM. METHODS: A prospective single-arm pilot educational intervention trial was conducted in individuals assigned female or intersex

Gender-Affirming Hormone Treatment and Metabolic Syndrome Among Transgender Veterans.

IMPORTANCE: Gender-affirming hormone treatment (GAHT) is a common therapy for transgender individuals to reduce gender dysphoria and improve quality of life. Clarifying the long-term effects of GAHT remains a priority in transgender health research. OBJECTIVE: To explore whether sex hormones (estradiol and testosterone) are associated with the development of metabolic syndrome in transgender veterans compared with cisgender veterans. DESIGN, SETTING, AND PARTICIPANTS: This retrospective, longitudinal cohort study used International Classification of Diseases, Ninth Revision and International

Epidemiology of personality disorders in individuals with gender dysphoria.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: Prevalence estimates of personality disorders (PD) in individuals with gender dysphoria (GD) are variable and heterogeneous, as psychiatric comorbidity and long-term follow-up data from gender-diverse samples are still limited. This review aims to assess prevalence rates across age groups and discuss potential reasons for variability in PD prevalence estimates among transgender people. RECENT FINDINGS: International epidemiological data from several countries indicate that the best available estimates of the prevalence of any PD diagnosis in transgender youth are around 20%

A psychosocial study of male-to-female transgendered and male hustler sex workers in São Paulo, Brazil.

This study examined sociodemographic variables, personality characteristics, and alcohol and drug misuse among male sex workers in the city of Santo André, São Paulo, Brazil. A total of 45 male-to-female transgender sex workers and 41 male hustlers were evaluated in face-to-face interviews at their place of work from 2008 to 2010. A "snowball" sampling procedure was used to access this hard-to-reach population. Male-to-female transgender sex workers reported fewer conventional job opportunities, fewer school problems, and higher harm avoidance and depression levels than male hustlers. Also, tr

Mapping the cardiovascular burden in transgender individuals: a systematic review and meta-analysis.

BACKGROUND: Transgender individuals represent a marginalised population, often exposed to unique psychosocial stressors, limited healthcare access, and social exclusion, all of which may contribute to an increased risk of cardiovascular disease (CVD). However, evidence focusing exclusively on the cardiovascular outcomes in this group remains limited. This systematic review and meta-analysis aimed to estimate the pooled prevalence of major cardiovascular morbidities among transgender adults. METHODS: A systematic search of five databases (PubMed, PubMed Central, Embase, Scopus, and Google Scho

Psychosocial and mental health outcomes associated with gender-affirming interventions among transgender youth: a scoping review.

INTRODUCTION: Transgender youth are a highly vulnerabilized population, facing stigma, discrimination, family rejection, and social exclusion that elevate their risk of depression, anxiety, and suicidal ideation. Gender-affirming interventions-medical, psychological, social, and structural-have been proposed to improve health and wellbeing in this group, but evidence on their psychosocial and mental health impact remains scattered across heterogeneous contexts and intervention types. This scoping review aimed to map and synthesize available evidence on psychosocial and mental health outcomes a

Mapping the evidence on sexual desire and sexual interest in transgender populations: a scoping review.

INTRODUCTION: Research on sexual desire is limited and inconsistent for transgender populations. This scoping review consolidates findings and clarifies measurement practices, associations, and prevalence for sexual desire in this population. The objective of this scoping review is to map how sexual desire and low sexual desire are measured and defined in transgender populations using validated instruments, including whether distress or impairment is assessed, and to identify limitations of cisgender-validated tools. METHODS: A scoping review following PRISMA-ScR guidelines was registered on

Clinical Care of Acne Vulgaris for Transgender and Gender Diverse Youth.

Urinary tract infections (UTIs) are the most common severe bacterial infections in young children, often associated with vesicoureteral reflux (VUR). To explore host genetic-microbiota interactions and their clinical implications, we analyzed the urinary microbiota (urobiota) and conducted genome-wide association studies for bacterial abundance traits in pediatric patients with UTI and VUR from the Randomized Intervention for Children with Vesicoureteral Reflux and Careful Urinary Tract Infection Evaluation cohorts. We identified 4 urobiota community types based on relative abundance, characte

Gender-Affirming Voice Surgery: Considerations for Surgical Intervention.

The purpose of this article is to provide an overview of the current state and available evidence surrounding surgical voice care for the transgender and/or gender expansive population. The term "gender expansive" has been proposed as an inclusive term to classify those who do not identify with traditional gender roles but are otherwise not confined to one gender narrative or experience. We aim to review indications and candidacy for surgery, surgical procedure options for altering vocal pitch, and typical postoperative expectations. The role of voice therapy and considerations for perioperati

Beyond the Binary: Gender Inclusivity in Schizophrenia Research.

Schizophrenia is a severe neuropsychiatric disorder with significant differences in the incidence and symptomology between cisgender men and women. In recent years, considerably more attention has been on the inclusion of sex and gender in schizophrenia research. However, the majority of this research has failed to consider gender outside of the socially constructed binary of men and women. As a result, little is known about schizophrenia in transgender and gender-nonconforming populations. In this review, we present evidence showing that transgender and gender-nonconforming individuals have e

EVALUATION OF SEXUAL FUNCTION IN TRANSGENDER AND GENDER DIVERSE INDIVIDUALS; A CALL FOR ACTION.

Sexual function is a key factor impacting all individuals' wellbeing, including the transgender and gender diverse (TGGD) population. Lack of validated sexual function evaluation tools for this community contributes to gaps in medical knowledge, barriers to proper assessment, interventions, and an understanding of sexual function expectations pre and post gender-affirming surgery (GAS). Current studies indicate beneficial individualized treatments for management of sexual dysfunction in TGGD individuals, while demonstrating the importance of applicable and validated sexual function assessments
