Successful cochlear implantation in a patient with superficial siderosis.

OBJECTIVE: To define the presentation and outcome of cochlear implantation in a patient with profound sensorineural hearing loss due to superficial siderosis. STUDY DESIGN: Retrospective case review. RESULTS: Postimplantation speech reception threshold was 34 dB, and hearing in noise testing sentences were 71% demonstrating a successful outcome. These results have been maintained for 5 years after implantation. CONCLUSION: Cochlear implantation is a potentially successful rehabilitation option for certain patients with profound sensorineural hearing loss due to superficial siderosis.

[Neuropsychological outcome of head injury in children].

Wechsler Intelligence Scale for Children-Revised (WISC-R) and Yatabe-Guilford personality test were administered to 31 children who had been hospitalized for head injury and made a GR or MD by the Glasgow Outcome Scale (GOS). The type of lesion, as defined by CT scan categories, was an important factor to prognosticate the outcome of intellectual function. The IQ, especially performance IQ, of acute subdural hematoma (EDH) or severe diffuse brain injury (DBI) was lower than that caused by other types of lesion. Several children demonstrated improvement in IQ level during the initial year. The

[Abnormal movements of peripheral origin: seven case reports].

INTRODUCTION: Movement disorders induced by central nervous system trauma are well recognized. The relation between peripheral injury and the subsequent development of movement disorders has been documented in many reports, specially dystonia and tremor. Pathophysiological mechanisms underlying these movement disorders are not well understood. CASE REPORTS: We report a group of seven patients with movement disorders induced by peripheral trauma. The inclusion criteria used for the patients were: the trauma was well documented for the patient and the medical history, and the onset of the movem

Spontaneous Escherichia coli Meningitis and Brain Abscess in an Immunocompetent Adult.

Escherichia coli is widely known to be a common cause of gram-negative bacterial meningitis in neonates and infants but is a rare cause of central nervous system infection in adults. Risk factors for E. coli meningitis (e.g., penetrating head trauma or neurosurgery) have been broadly discussed in the literature. Here, we describe a case of spontaneous E. coli meningitis with multiple enhancing brain lesions and liver abscess in an immunocompetent adult that presented as generalized weakness.

[Risk factors and disposition in development of the nervous system infections].

INTRODUCTION: Although well protected, brain is not resistant to infection agents. Acute infections of our nervous system appear more often in children and in persons who have medical history data about previous disorders, especially disorders of the nervous system. It is difficult to list possible risk factors which can be responsible for the appearance of infections of CNS and the resulting conditions. It is often difficult or impossible to determine what previous neural damage was (trauma, anoxic damages etc.) from those appearing during infections of CNS. All-inclusive anamnestic research

Trace amine-associated receptor 1 (TAAR1): an emerging therapeutic target for neurodegenerative, neurodevelopmental, and neurotraumatic disorders.

Trace amines are physiologically active amines present in all organisms. They are structurally identical to traditional monoamines and are rapidly metabolized by monoamine oxidases. The mammalian neurological system generates these molecules at rates equivalent to traditional monoamines, but because of their short half-life, they are only observable in trace quantities. Their receptors are G protein-coupled receptors present in both the CNS and peripheral locations, with trace amine-associated receptor 1 (TAAR1) being the most researched. TAAR1's capacity to regulate glutamatergic and monoamin

Brain and Heart Interactions Delineating Cardiac Dysfunction in Four Common Neurological Disorders: A Systematic Review and Meta-analysis.

Neurological and cardiovascular disorders are the leading causes of morbidity and mortality worldwide. While the effects of cardiovascular disease (CD) on the nervous system are well understood, understanding of the reciprocal relationship has only recently become clearer. Based on disability-adjusted life years, this systematic review and meta-analysis present the pooled incidence and association of CD in 4 selected common, noncommunicable neurological disorders: (1) migraine, (2) Alzheimer disease and other dementias, (3) epilepsy, and (4) head injury. Sixty-five studies, including over 4 an

Neuropathology and Ophthalmological Pathology of Fatal Central Nervous System Injuries in Young Children: Forensic Neuropathology of Deaths of Children Under Age 2, 2008-2016, in Central Missouri.

Nonaccidental head injuries are significant causes of morbidity and mortality among young children. Despite broad agreement among medical experts, controversies remain over diagnostic criteria, including from autopsies, because of opinions expressed by a small group of expert witnesses who testify for defendants in suspected child homicide cases. We reviewed 249 autopsies in children 2 years old and younger from the files of our Medical Examiner office in the University of Missouri School of Medicine done between January 1, 2008 and December, 31, 2016. Because of gradually instituted mandatory

[Study on early stage operation for Denis II sacral fracture accompanied by neurological damage].

OBJECTIVE: To study therapeutic effects of early stage operation for type I sacral fracture accompanied by neurological damage. METHODS: Twelve patients with type II sacral fracture accompanied by neurological damage were reviewed in the study from March 2008 to March 2010, including 8 males and 4 females. Final diagnosis was given according to the evaluation of physical examination, X-ray, CT and MRI. Operations were performed 6 to 14 days after injury, averaged 9 days. According to Denis classification of sacral fracture, 12 patients were Type H . Eight patients suffered from severe anterio

Sacral fractures: current strategies in diagnosis and management.

Sacral fractures are commonly associated with pelvic ring fractures due to high-energy mechanisms of injury. An understanding of the anatomic relation of the sacrum to the lumbar spine, pelvis, and surrounding neurovascular structures is critical in evaluating functional deficits that may be associated with sacral fractures. While displaced fractures can be easily diagnosed on high quality plain radiographs, nondisplaced or transverse fracture patterns may be difficult to diagnose without a computed tomography scan. Once identified, correct classification of a sacral fracture can facilitate id

Study on small gap sleeve bridging peripheral nerve injury.

Epineurium or perineurium neurorrhaphy to recover the nerve continuity was the choice of peripheral nerve mutilation. The nerve selective regeneration theory was put forth by Cajal et al. As this theory was gradually accepted, many researchers had focused on it and its possible application. Our labs had centered on the small gap sleeve bridging fields for about 30 years, using autogeneic vein, artery and biogradable chitin conduits. Our goal was to improve the nerve regeneration effect by means of nerve selective regeneration theory and degradable biomaterials. This serial experiment was to co

Posttraumatic gustatory rhinorrhea.

We describe a case of gustatory rhinorrhea in which gustatory stimuli caused nasal obstruction and secretion simulating cerebrospinal rhinorrhea. This disorder was presumably caused by faulty regenerated parasympathetic nerve fibers reaching the nasal mucosa or, possibly, by a congenital condition. The characteristics of this disorder are compared with other autonomic disorders of the head and neck.

Drug ingestions associated with miosis in comatose children.

The occurrence of pupillary constriction in children comatose as a result of the acute ingestion of common drugs has been studied in a large pediatric hospital by reviewing records of patients admitted between 1965 and 1974. Among 94 patients with an acute drug ingestion, the frequency of miosis in relation to the cause of coma was 88% for narcotics, 72% for phenothiazines, 35% for ethanol, and 31% for barbiturates. In contrast, miosis was noted in only 3% of 105 patients with coma from head injuries or infection of the central nervous system. Miosis was associated with all four drug ingestion
