Examining the Relationship Between Alcohol Consumption and Burnout Among Nurses.

INTRODUCTION: Health professionals may be susceptible to misusing alcohol due to stress and burnout. This is especially true in states with high alcohol consumption. Health care organizations can implement evidence-based policies, programs, and solutions that identify, address, and help prevent adverse outcomes and burnout for health workers. Recommendations for health care professionals are learning to recognize signs of distress, mental challenges, and burnout. Staying connected and reaching out for help is a start to getting back to basic good health habits instead of developing unhealthy h

Oral palatine ulcers of a traumatic nature in infants: Bednar's aphthae.

The authors present five cases of large palatine ulcers of a traumatic nature in infants, with duration from two weeks to four months. Causal diagnosis was difficult at first until the possibility of trauma caused by non-orthodontic nipples (all cases) and dummies (4)--Bednar's aphthae--was considered. Other problems related to sucking were observed: a horizontal position for nursing (all) and very narrow nipple hole (4). The infants' mothers were advised to enlarge the orifice in the nipple and correct the position for nursing (3 cases) and, in addition, to suspend use of a dummy (1 case) and

Rehabilitation after injury and the need for coordination.

The outcome of treatment after injury can be measured using the general terms of mortality and morbidity. Mortality is an all-or-none phenomenon, but morbidity is a graded response to injury and its medical treatment, varying from complete return to normality at one end of the scale to total dependence on other people requiring residence in an institution at the other end. The words disability (the individual's response) and handicap (society's reaction) specify the morbidity. Rehabilitation affects these two outcomes of disability and handicap and is a complex process involving the patient, c

Construction of nursing-sensitive quality indicator system for cardiac rehabilitation of patients undergoing percutaneous coronary intervention based on structure-process-outcome model.

BACKGROUND: Coronary heart disease (CHD) is a cardiovascular disease with high mortality. At present, percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI) is considered as the main effective treatment for CHD due to less trauma, shorter course of treatment, and better curative effect. However, PCI alone is not a permanent cure, so cardiac rehabilitation (CR) is needed for a supplement. Nowadays, the evaluation of the nursing-sensitive quality of CR after PCI focuses on the outcomes of patients, lacks a complete evaluation indicator system, and is prone to problems such as nursing management imbalance. Holistic Supports for Street Nurses and Front-line Workers during the COVID-19 Pandemic.

Street nurses who serve people experiencing homelessness and substance abuse are at risk of vicarious trauma and long-term mental health challenges. These risks have increased during the COVID-19 pandemic due to a concomitant spike in opioid overdoses and deaths in Canada, fewer available support services and worsening social challenges. This article describes innovative interdisciplinary and participatory research currently being undertaken to develop and evaluate a multifaceted support program to promote the holistic well-being of street nurses and their front-line colleagues.

How to help women at risk for acute stress disorder after childbirth.

For some women, childbirth is a traumatic experience that results in significant mental and emotional distress. Whether owing to birth complications, postpartum events such as hemorrhage or pre-existing risk factors such as past history of sexual abuse or rape, the emotional effects of childbirth trauma can lead to acute stress disorder (ASD). To provide the best care for women after childbirth, it's imperative that nurses be able to identify signs of ASD and intervene appropriately. There are many things nurses can do to help women in what could be the most vulnerable time of their lives.

Back pain: a case study.

Musculoskeletal complaints, especially back pain without trauma, are frequent health problems seen by nurse practitioners in community emergency centers and office settings. Back pain can be a symptom of serious health problems. This article presents the case of a Caucasian male in his early sixties who reported sudden onset of back pain after pushing a heavy object. Careful clinical assessment led the nurse practitioner with the collaborating physician to pursue diagnostic tests, which revealed thoracic and abdominal aortic aneurysms.

Overview of pediatric arrhythmias.

Cardiac arrhythmias are being depressed with increased frequency in the pediatric population. Causes of pediatric arrhythmias in the general population include severe metabolic or electrolyte disturbances, drug toxicity, and chest trauma. Repairs of complex congenital heart disease have frequently left this population with persistent or recurrent postoperative arrhythmias. The diagnosis, evaluation, and management of pediatric arrhythmias requires nurses to be skilled in hemodynamic assessment and arrhythmia detection. The registered nurse's grasp of developmental issues and family education i

Nonsuicidal Self-Injury: A Nurse-Led Quality Improvement Project to Address Self-Harm.

Nonsuicidal self-injury (NSSI) behaviors, such as cutting, scratching, or more severe injuries, are frequently comorbid with neurodevelopmental, intellectual, trauma, personality, and major depressive disorders, complicating treatment and placing added care burdens on hospital nursing staff and advanced practice nurses. Although specific psychopharmacological treatment guidelines and approved medications for NSSI are non-existent, patients are treated with medications approved for co-morbid disorders and behavioral interventions targeting intrapersonal (poor emotional self-regulation) and inte

Factors related to perineal trauma in childbirth.

We conducted an observational cohort study in three nurse-midwifery services to identify patient characteristics and clinical care measures related to perineal trauma at birth. Data were collected on all women who began care with a nurse-midwife in labor, using an adaptation of the Nurse-Midwifery Clinical Data Set (n = 3,049). Study variables included demographics, perineal management techniques and position for birth, and other intrapartum care and events. Univariate and multivariate analyses showed that episiotomy was strongly related to fetal bradycardia, prolonged second stage, ethnic sta

Validation of a Turkish Translation of the Stress in Emergency Healthcare Professionals: The Stress Factors and Manifestations Scale.

AIM: The primary duties of emergency healthcare professionals (EHPs) are to provide emergency patient care to acutely ill and injured individuals. Due to the nature of their work, EHPs operate under constant stress, often requiring rapid decision-making, swift action, and the delivery of necessary medical care in life-or-death situations, sometimes under inadequately safe conditions. Therefore, the aim of this study is to determine the validity and reliability of the Emergency Healthcare Professional Stress Factors and Symptoms (SEHP:SFMS) Scale in Turkish for identifying stress factors and sy

Trauma and acute care surgeons report prescribing less opioids over time.

INTRODUCTION: Confronted with the opioid epidemic, surgeons must play a larger role to reduce risk of opioid abuse while managing acute pain. Having a better understanding of the beliefs and practices of trauma and acute care surgeons regarding discharge pain management may offer potential targets for interventions beyond fixed legal mandates. METHODS: An Institutional Review Board-approved electronic survey was sent to trauma and acute care surgeons who are members of the American Association for the Surgery of Trauma, and trauma and acute care surgeons and nurse practitioners at a Level 1 t

[Prevention of psychological disorders after a road accident].

A psychological intervention programme, set up within a trauma centre, revealed common factors contributing to the emotional upheaval felt by road accident victims. These factors are linked to the event itself, its medical management, the quality of family support and the patient's history. Early psychotherapy, the awareness of the nursing teams and the involvement of the families are the key elements ensuring coherent and effective prevention.
