Tuberculosis is one of the most common diseases in India and has attained epidemic proportions. Tuberculosis and liver are related in many ways. Liver disease can occur due to hepatic tuberculosis or the treatment with various anti-tubercular drugs may precipitate hepatic injury or patients with chronic liver disease may develop tuberculosis and pose special management problems. Tuberculosis per se can affect liver in three forms. The most common form is the diffuse hepatic involvement, seen along with pulmonary or miliary tuberculosis. The second is granulomatous hepatitis and the third, much

It is well known that peritoneal tuberculosis may mimic advanced-stage epithelial ovarian carcinoma because of similar clinical, radiologic, and laboratory findings. However, disseminated peritoneal tuberculosis mimicking advanced-stage endodermal sinus tumor (ESS) has not been reported previously. An 18-year-old nulliparous woman came with the complaint of pelvic pain and weight loss. Imaging studies demonstrated that she had multiple peritoneal implants and left adnexial mass. Also, laboratory studies showed elevated CA125 and alpha fetoprotein levels suggesting an initial diagnosis of ESS.

BACKGROUND: Tuberculosis is a global health issue affecting millions of people worldwide. While pulmonary tuberculosis is common, hepatic tuberculosis is rare and accounts for less than 1% of cases. Diagnosis is challenging owing to nonspecific symptoms and its ability to mimic other hepatic diseases.
CASE PRESENTATION: This case report describes a 62-year-old male healthcare worker, originally from the Philippines and of Filipino ethnicity, who was initially suspected to have cystic echinococcosis, an epidemiologically uncommon zoonotic disease in both Austria and the Philippines. Echinococc

Eight cases of abdominal tuberculosis from the Department of Medicine, Singapore General Hospital are reported to illustrate the varied clinical manifestations of the disease. Presentation ranged from asymptomatic hepatomegaly to acute abdomen (intestinal obstruction/perforation). Chronic non-specific symptomatology (fever, weight loss, abdominal pain, diarrhoea, jaundice) was commonest. There were three patients with hepatic tuberculosis, two with tuberculous mesenteric lymphadenitis and three with intestinal tuberculosis, two of whom had concomitant tuberculous peritonitis. Only three patien

Hepatic granulomatosis is an anatomo-pathologic feature, rising from the aspecific answer of the liver to various antigenic, toxic and infectious noxae. One of the most frequent symptoms of this disease is a some weeks lasting fever. The most frequent etiology is proved to be infectious, particularly tuberculosis, and sarcoidosis. In this paper an analysis of the various diseases which can produce hepatic granulomas is presented, as well as the clinical case of patient with fever and hepatic disease for whom it has been possible to get to an etioilogic diagnosis of tuberculosis only through an

Hepatic involvement is common in miliary and extra-pulmonary tuberculosis but is usually clinically silent. Therefore, it is rarely diagnosed. We report the case of a patient that presented with prolonged fever and hepatomegaly. Liver biopsy revealed non-necrotizing granulomas that led in turn to the diagnosis of generalized tuberculosis and HIV infection. The patient reported an old untreated tuberculosis and depression of the immune system provoked the reactivation of this old tuberculosis focus. We describe the clinical course of the disease and the challenges associated with the complexity

Anti-tuberculosis drugs can produce levels of hepatotoxicity ranging from mild elevation of aminotransferase to severe acute hepatitis. A few cases of drug-induced autoimmune hepatitis or the drug reaction with eosinophilia and systemic symptom (DRESS) syndrome by anti-tuberculosis medications have been reported. However, concomitant occurrence of these two disorders has not been reported. Here, we present a case of severe acute hepatitis with DRESS syndrome and autoimmune hepatitis resulting from primary standard anti-tuberculosis drugs. Both conditions were successfully treated with a system

Congenital tuberculosis is a severe rapidly progressive disease which differs from neonatal tuberculosis because patients present tuberculous lesions during their first weeks of life, primary hepatic complex or hepatic caseous granulomas, confirmation of tuberculosis in placenta or in maternal genital tract (uterus or adnexa), and exclusion of birth channel or postnatal exposure. We report a case of a 20 days newborn baby admitted to the neonatal unit with fever, hepatoesplenomegaly, abdominal distension and respiratory symptoms. Abdominal echography showed ascitis, diffuse hepatomegaly and sp

Fluorodeoxyglucose (FDG) hepatic superscan refers to the diffuse intense uptake of 18F-FDG in the liver on positron emission tomography (PET), with reduced physiological activity in the brain and heart. The common causes include lymphoma and metastasis. In this case report, we describe the imaging features of tuberculosis as a rare cause of FDG hepatic superscan. PET imaging may be the only clue to a diagnosis of hepatic tuberculosis, as other imaging modalities may demonstrate only nonspecific hepatomegaly. It is important to consider this entity in the differential diagnosis of patients pres

Hepatic tuberculosis can manifest in various forms, including parenchymal, serohepatic, tuberculous cholangitis and mixed form. Isolated hepatic tuberculosis, specifically in the form of serohepatic tuberculosis, is very rare. Patients with hepatic tuberculosis often present with nonspecific symptoms such as abdominal pain, weight loss, night fever, night sweats, hepatomegaly, and abnormal liver function tests. This case involves a young male with isolated serohepatic tuberculosis who presented to the outpatient department of a tertiary care center with complaints of abdominal discomfort, weig

The risk of active tuberculosis is high in solid-organ recipients. We evaluated the clinical presentation of tuberculosis. Pulmonary locations were the most frequent, and extrapulmonary locations were rarely seen. Among extrapulmonary sites, intracranial tuberculosis is rare, with a few case reports reported in the literature. We report a case of 27-year-old man, who received deceased-donor liver transplant due to hepatitis B virus-related chronic liver failure. One month after the liver transplant, neurologic symptoms developed, then he had attacks of tonic-clonic convulsions. Cerebral stereo

Gynaecomastia is a common clinical presentation that varies from benign presentations in stages of human development to hormonal pathology, mainly due to hepatic dysfunction, malignancy, and adverse pharmacologic effects. We describe the development of significant bilateral gynaecomastia after starting treatment for pulmonary tuberculosis (TB) in two males with WHO stage III Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV) infection on stable antiretroviral regimens. Emerging reports suggest that distinct hepatic impairment in efavirenz metabolism modulates oestrogenic activity, which may be potentiated by

The patients with pulmonary tuberculosis suffer from hepatic dysfunction due to both hepatotoxic affection with anti-TB drugs and other factors (hypoxia, antioxidant deficiency, intoxication). Therefore, the aim of the research was to study the markers of cytolytic and cholestatic syndromes in cases of hepatic dysfunction in the first diagnosed patients with pulmonary tuberculosis before treatment and in two months of treatment with first-line antituberculous drugs. Three groups of persons were examined: the first group of almost healthy donors (control) - 31 persons. Also, 62 patients were ex

AIM: This study was performed to evaluate the potential efficacy of silymarin in the management of anti-tuberculosis medication's induced liver injury.
BACKGROUND: Hepatic toxicity is the most serious complication in treatment of tuberculosis.
METHODS: In a randomized double blind clinical trial (ACTRN12610000643077), 55 cases with hepatotoxicity caused by anti-tuberculosis drugs were divided into two groups. Informed consents were obtained. The intervention group received silymarin and the control group received placebo. Severity of liver injury, the duration necessary for normalization of

This article illustrates the difficulties in the treatment of tuberculosis through the case of a patient with tuberculosis presenting with a haemophagocytic syndrome, severe drug hypersensitivity and a dissemination of the disease. A month after tuberculosis chemotherapy was started, Mrs. R.S, aged 45 years, presented with febrile exanthema, confusion, multiple lymph nodes enlargement/polyadenopathy, bi-cytopenia and a severe hepatic cytolysis. The haemophagocytic syndrome was confirmed by a myelogram and had shown a good response to the administration of methylprednisolone. Tuberculosis chemo

BACKGROUND: Tuberculosis is an important cause of morbidity and mortality in renal transplant recipients, but there are insufficient data regarding the efficacy and complications of therapy and of INH prophylaxis.
METHODS: This study is a retrospective review of the records of 880 renal transplant recipients in two centers in Turkey.
RESULTS: Tuberculosis developed in 36 patients (4.1%) at posttransplant 3-111 months, of which 28 were successfully treated. Eight patients (22.2%) died of tuberculosis or complications of anti-tuberculosis therapy. Use of rifampin necessitated a mean of 2-fold
