Pulmonary foreign body granulomatosis following intravenous administration of medications meant for oral use among drug addicts has been occasionally reported. This condition is often misdiagnosed because of its rarity, but rather due to its similarity to other pulmonary diseases that are more common. Here we report a case of pulmonary intravascular talcosis mimicking miliary tuberculosis in a young male intravenous drug addict from North-Eastern Estonia, known as a hotspot for tuberculosis and drug misuse. The condition was caused by intravenous administration of crushed tablets of diphenhydr

PURPOSE: To describe a case of unilateral frosted branch angiitis in a patient with abdominal tuberculosis.
METHODS: Observational case report.
RESULTS: A 17-year-old girl with chronic abdominal pain, cough, and amenorrhea for 5 months presented with complaints of sudden diminution of vision in both eyes for 1 day. Fundus examination of the right eye showed disk edema, dilated tortuous vessels with perivascular sheathing (frosted branch angiitis), retinal hemorrhages, and macular edema. The left eye had areas of healed choroiditis. Duodenal biopsy showed features suggestive of tuberculosis.

INTRODUCTION: Paracoccidioidomycosis is a disease that is endemic to southern and southeastern Brazil, caused by the fungus Paracoccidioides brasiliensis. The most common clinical oral manifestation is the presence of multiple granulomatous ulcers with hemorrhagic dots, located mainly on the lips, palate, and buccal mucosa. However, the disease can manifest atypically as a single ulcer, mimicking oral squamous cell carcinoma (SCC) or tuberculosis.
CASE REPORT: A 65-year-old male patient presented with a complaint of a single ulcerated lesion on the dorsum of the tongue; the lesion had evolved

White-tailed deer (Odocoileus virginianus) experimentally infected with a virulent strain of Mycobacterium bovis have been shown to transmit the bacterium to other deer and cattle (Bos taurus) by sharing of pen waste and feed. The risk of transmission of M. bovis bacille Calmette-Guerin (BCG) vaccine from orally vaccinated white-tailed deer to other deer and cattle, however, is not well understood. In order to evaluate this risk, we orally vaccinated 14 white-tailed deer with 1×10(9) colony forming units BCG in lipid-formulated baits and housed them with nine non-vaccinated deer. Each day we e

An 83-year-old woman presented with a 2-month history of a gradually enlarging, reddish, crusted papule on her left medial epicanthus. Her medical history did not reveal any systemic disease. She gave no personal history of tuberculosis or any systemic symptoms, such as night sweat, weight loss, and pulmonary abnormalities. Her husband had been treated for pulmonary tuberculosis 30 years ago. A dermatologic examination revealed a 2.5 x 1.2-cm nontender, erythematous plaque with fine, white adherent scales on the left medial epicanthus (figure 1A). All laboratory values were within the normal r

A 56-year-old man, having no particular past history, was admitted to our hospital, with a 9-month history of painful ulcerated lesion of the tongue and a 6-month history of productive cough. A physical examination revealed swelling of his cervical lymph nodes, and a chest roentgenogram on admission showed cavities in the both upper lung fields and nodular shadows over the both lung fields. He was initially suspected of having both cancer of the tongue and pulmonary tuberculosis, but finally diagnosed as secondary tuberculosis of the tongue due to sputum smear-positive pulmonary tuberculosis b

Tuberculosis is one of the oldest diseases known to humankind and it is currently a worldwide threat with 8-9 million new active disease being reported every year. Among patients with co-infection of the human immunodeficiency virus (HIV), tuberculosis is ultimately responsible for the most deaths. Cutaneous tuberculosis (CTB) is uncommon, comprising 1-1.5% of all extra-pulmonary tuberculosis manifestations, which manifests only in 8.4-13.7% of all tuberculosis cases. A more accurate classification of CTB includes inoculation tuberculosis, tuberculosis from an endogenous source and haematogeno

Metformin is the preferred oral medication for patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus, and this blood glucose-lowering and insulin-sensitizing drug has immunomodulatory effects that could contribute to the management of patients with various other autoimmune and infectious diseases. Tuberculosis is one such infection, and it remains prevalent worldwide, largely due to the successful evasion of the host's immune responses by the infecting pathogen, Mycobacterium tuberculosis. This review focuses on the possible mechanisms relevant to metformin's modulation of innate and adaptive immune response

UNLABELLED: Behçet's disease (BD) is a systemic vasculitis characterized by recurrent orogenital ulceration and several systemic manifestations (such as gastrointestinal involvement, vascular disease or arthritis). The pathogenesis is still unknown but the trigger role of certain pathogens such as Mycobacterium tuberculosis is well documented. Furthermore, patients with BD are more susceptible to tuberculosis due to immunity defects. Here, we describe the case of a 70-year-old woman with a history of recurrent oral aphthae and inflammatory arthritis presenting with extensive thrombosis of left

Increased incidence of bovine tuberculosis (TB) in the United Kingdom caused by infection with Mycobacterium bovis is a cause of considerable economic loss to farmers and the government. The Eurasian badger (Meles meles) represents a wildlife source of recurrent M. bovis infections of cattle in the United Kingdom, and its vaccination against TB with M. bovis bacillus Calmette-Guérin (BCG) is an attractive disease control option. Delivery of BCG in oral bait holds the best prospect for vaccinating badgers over a wide geographical area. Using a guinea pig pulmonary challenge model, we evaluated

A 78-year-old man with a previous diagnosis of rheumatoid arthritis on prolonged treatment with corticosteroids presented with intense and progressive pain at the cervical level that prevented him from resting his head and walking, in addition to an ulcerative lesion covering 80% of the lingual area that was previously treated as oral candidiasis without improvement. On arrival, with no clinical or serological data of rheumatoid arthritis, immunosuppressive treatment was suspended, and a biopsy of the oral cavity was requested, confirming the diagnosis of lingual tuberculosis, an extremely rar

Tuberculosis remains the biggest global killer from infectious causes, with an estimated 1.25 million deaths per year. The quadruple drug regimen of rifampicin, isoniazid, pyrazinamide, and ethambutol has been standard therapy for 40 years, with good outcomes in patients with drug susceptible tuberculosis who are able to tolerate the drug regimen. However, the frequency of adverse drug reactions and emergence of drug resistant tuberculosis has created demand for new treatment strategies: there is now a surge in novel tuberculosis agents and regimens entering human trials. For decades, drug res

We present a rare case of asymptomatic allergic bronchopulmonary aspergillosis (ABPA) concurrent with active pulmonary tuberculosis. Allergic bronchopulmonary aspergillosis is an immunological pulmonary disorder characterized by hypersensitivity to Aspergillus fumigatus, while pulmonary tuberculosis (PTB) is a complex infection caused by Mycobacterium tuberculosis (MTB). The association between pulmonary tuberculosis infections and Aspergillus infections remains a fascinating area of inquiry. A 26-year-old female patient exhibited no symptoms. However, her initial chest computed tomography rev

INTRODUCTION: Isolated hepatic tuberculosis is an uncommon manifestation of one of the most common infections worldwide, caused by Mycobacterium tuberculosis. Extremely high serum ferritin, which is regarded as a marker of adult onset Still's disease, has not been observed in patients with tuberculosis of the liver. We report a case of hepatic tuberculosis who presented with clinical criteria of adult-onset Still's disease and extreme hyperferritinemia, which posed a diagnostic confusion.
CASE PRESENTATION: Our patient was a 48-year-old Sri Lankan man who presented with fever, polyarthralgia

BACKGROUND AND AIM: Differentiating Crohn's disease from intestinal tuberculosis often challenges clinicians in countries where tuberculosis and Crohn's disease coexist. The aim of this study was to screen out clinical, endoscopic and histological features which may be helpful in distinguishing Crohn's disease from intestinal tuberculosis.
METHODS: 43 patients with a confirmed diagnosis of intestinal tuberculosis and 53 patients with Crohn's disease were recruited for this study. Their clinical, endoscopic and histological features were subjected to univariate and multivariate analyses.

The diagnosis of thoracopulmonary actinomycosis is challenging because it is a rare disease, symptoms are aspecific and can mimic a lot of other lung pathologies. Especially the differential diagnosis with pulmonary tuberculosis is difficult because clinical symptoms are often very similar. We present a case of thoracopulmonary abcedating actinomycosis in a young immunocompetent man with no predisposing illness. He was initially treated for pulmonary tuberculosis. He showed good response to IV penicillin, which was later switched to oral amoxicillin when he went home.
