Spinal tuberculosis with circumferential involvement of two noncontiguous isolated vertebral levels: case report.

We present a case of a 16-year-old boy with an atypical form of spinal tuberculosis, which circumferentially involved two noncontiguous vertebral levels without destruction of the adjacent vertebral bodies and intervertebral discs. The lesions caused paraplegia and loss of sphincter control, and they were confined to a single vertebra at each site; the findings more closely mimicked spinal malignancies. There was no evidence of pulmonary or other extrapulmonary tuberculous disease. The patient was successfully treated both surgically and medically using posterior decompression and a stabilizin

Cervical spinal tuberculosis: Consistent imaging clues for early recognition from a case series.

BACKGROUND: Spinal tuberculosis is the most common form of musculoskeletal tuberculosis, although cervical spine involvement is relatively uncommon. It is clinically significant because even limited vertebral destruction may result in spinal cord compression and neurological deficits. CASE DESCRIPTION: We report three patients in their late teens and twenties presenting with progressive neck pain and neurological symptoms. Radiographs demonstrated vertebral collapse and widening of the retropharyngeal soft-tissue space. Magnetic resonance imaging revealed extensive vertebral destruction with

Concurrent intracranial tuberculomas and spinal tuberculosis with multifocal abscesses: a rare case report.

INTRODUCTION: Neurotuberculosis is a severe form of tuberculosis affecting the central nervous system, manifesting as tuberculomas or abscesses. Simultaneous intracranial and spinal tuberculomas with abscesses are exceptionally rare, presenting unique diagnostic and therapeutic challenges. CASE PRESENTATION: A 40-year-old female presented with headaches, seizures, and lower limb weakness. The magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) revealed multiple intracranial and spinal tuberculomas with abscesses. She was treated with antitubercular therapy and corticosteroids, along with surgical drainage, lead

Surgical treatment approach of cervicothoracic junction spinal tuberculosis in pediatric: A case report.

INTRODUCTION AND IMPORTANCE: The cervicothoracic junction is prone to infection by tuberculosis bacteria, which leads to spinal instability. Meanwhile, cervicothoracic junction spinal tuberculosis is a disease that affects the C7 to T3 vertebral, and it accounts for 5% of all spinal tuberculosis cases. Surgical procedures of treating this disease vary, and the most commonly used method is the combined anterior and posterior approach. This case report presents the disease with uncommon location in pediatric, which is rarely reported, and performed with the single-stage posterior approach to tre

One-stage posterior approach for treating multilevel noncontiguous thoracic and lumbar spinal tuberculosis.

OBJECTIVES: Multilevel noncontiguous thoracic and lumbar spinal tuberculosis (MNST) is a relatively rare entity. The objective of this retrospective study was to investigate whether a technique involving a one-stage posterior debridement and decompression, combined with an intervertebral fusion and posterior instrumentation, is effective for treating MNST. METHODS: Thirteen patients, with an average age of 40.69 (18-67) years, who had MNST and were surgically treated in our department from January 2008 to October 2013, were reviewed. RESULTS: The average follow-up time was 37.54 ± 10.49 (19-

Atypical spinal tuberculosis involved noncontiguous multiple segments: Case series report with literature review.

In its typical form, spinal tuberculosis (TB) presents as destroyed contiguous vertebral bodies with involvement of intervertebral discs and paravertebral or psoas abscesses. Atypical forms are uncommonly reported. Here, we describe 8 patients with noncontiguous multisegmental spinal TB with no intervertebral disc involvement. From 2013 to 2014, we surgically treated 384 patients with spinal TB to relieve spinal cord compression, re-establish spinal stability, confirm the diagnosis, and debride the TB foci. Eight of these patients had noncontiguous multisegmental TB without intervertebral disc

Spinal tuberculosis--the commonest cause of non-traumatic paraplegia in Papua New Guinea.

A retrospective study was undertaken of 53 cases of non-traumatic paraplegia admitted to two major hospitals in Papua New Guinea (PNG) from 1975-1982; 19 of these cases were examined. The mean age of the patients was 29 years (range: 2-70 years). Spinal tuberculosis was the commonest cause of paraplegia (83%), followed by neoplasia (7.5%). Two cases of chronic idiopathic arachnoiditis were noted but nutritional myelopathy was not diagnosed. Thirty-one (70%) of the 44 tuberculosis patients responded to treatment and were ambulant at discharge but only 18% were known to have completed 18 months'

Defining surgical indication for instability in spinal tuberculosis: validation analysis of Tuberculosis Spine Instability Score (TSIS) : a prospective observational cohort study.

AIMS: In the absence of neurological deficits, the decision for surgery in spinal tuberculosis (STB) depends on the individual experiences of the surgeons, which may differ widely. There is currently no universal consensus on an objective definition of instability in STB. The Tuberculosis Spine Instability Score (TSIS) was developed to discriminate between the stable and unstable spine in STB. In the current study, we analyze the reliability, responsiveness, and construct validity of the TSIS to define clear guidelines for management of STB. METHODS: Individuals presenting with STB were evalu

First whole genome sequencing data of a Mycobacterium tuberculosis STB-T1A strain isolated from a spinal tuberculosis patient in Sabah, Malaysia.

Spinal tuberculosis, also referred to as Pott's disease, presents a significant risk of severe paralysis if not promptly detected and treated, owing to complications such as spinal cord compression and deformity. This article presents the genetic analysis of a Mycobacterium tuberculosis STB-T1A strain, isolated from the spine of a 29-year-old female diagnosed with spinal tuberculosis. Genomic DNA was extracted from pure culture and subjected to sequencing using the Illumina NovaSeq 6000 sequencing system. The genome of the M. tuberculosis STB-T1A strain spans 4,367,616 base pairs with a G+C co

Development and validation of a nomogram for predicting postoperative bone nonunion in spinal tuberculosis patients.

BACKGROUND: Postoperative bone nonunion is a critical complication following instrumented fusion for spinal tuberculosis. Preoperative prediction is essential for prevention. While clinical risk factors exist, current predictive tools lack validation in infected cohorts. PURPOSE: This study developed and validated a multivariate nomogram, provided an individualized preoperative estimate of nonunion risk in spinal tuberculosis patients, incorporating key clinical and radiological predictors to guide preventative strategies. METHOD: A retrospective cohort of 178 patients undergoing debridement

Study on the expression level of NF-κB and clinical evaluations in spinal tuberculosis patients.

Spinal tuberculosis or tuberculous spondylitis is one of the most common types of skeletal tuberculosis. Complications of the spine and spinal cord tuberculosis include destruction of the vertebrae, deformity, and paraplegia. Since in some patients, the clinical manifestations of tuberculosis are unusual and timely diagnosis and treatment of this disease can prevent its serious consequences, so in the present study, some cases of rare manifestations of tuberculosis were investigated. The expression of the NF-κB gene in these patients was also evaluated. In this regard, 36 patients with spinal
