Ultrasound-guided lumbar plexus block (LPB) performed with the Shamrock approach has received much interest since the technique was first described in 2013. The technique is believed to be faster and easier to perform and possibly safer in regards to potential complications compared with other LPBs. In order to outline some favorable characteristics of the Shamrock LPB, we performed an exhaustive search of the current literature; even though it is rather limited. We have related the evidence to our own clinical experience about the block execution. We present a narrative review of the alleged

Rotator cuff calcific tendinopathy (RCCT) is a common disease that may cause highly disabling shoulder pain. No treatment is required for asymptomatic calcifications; mild symptoms may be treated conservatively. Among several therapeutic options, ultrasound-guided percutaneous irrigation of calcific tendinopathy (US-PICT) is currently accepted as the first-line safe and effective treatment for RCCT, with significant pain improvement and a very low rate of minor complications. Different approaches have been reported to dissolve calcified deposits, all including the use of a fluid (local anesthe

Coronary artery perforation (CAP) is a rare but potentially fatal complication of percutaneous coronary intervention. Polytetrafluoroethylene-covered stents prevent blood leakage between struts with a high rate of success. However, they lack elasticity and rapid and correct deployment is difficult. They have also a higher rate of stent restenosis and thrombosis. For these reasons, optimal deployment is essential. Although severe CAP needs an emergent solution, after stabilizing the patient, intracoronary imaging techniques may be useful to ensure correct expansion and reduce further adverse ev

Although endovascular therapy for peripheral arterial disease has undergone tremendous changes, chronic total occlusion (CTO) remains a significant challenge for interventionalists. Failed CTO recanalization is predominately due to unsuccessful guidewire crossing. In particular, the unique characteristics of tortuous and deeply located large vessels in the retroperitoneal cavity create challenging endovascular procedures. Real-time guidance based on external direct vessel visualization might be a promising tool for successful recanalization of noncalcific CTO. Here, we describe the practical u

Carotid ultrasonography is useful for the assessments of the risk stratification for stroke or coronary artery disease, because it is a simple, repeatable, and noninvasive procedure. The carotid intima-media thickness (IMT), which is assessed using carotid ultrasonography, is a widely used surrogate marker for the severity of atherosclerosis. Several large clinical studies showed that increased carotid IMT is associated with the future stroke or cardiovascular events. In addition, in many clinical trials, it has been adopted for surrogate markers of clinical endpoints of medical intervention.

UNLABELLED: Postpartum hemorrhage (PPH) is one of the common causes of morbidity as well as mortality among pregnant women. Obstetric hemorrhage embolization (OHE)/uterine artery embolization (UAE) is the preferred treatment for PPH which has failed medical therapy. In cases of placental accreta spectrum (PAS), balloon catheter can be prophylactically placed in internal iliac arteries (IIAs) bilaterally before delivery to enable postpartum control of bleeding. An inferior vena cava (IVC) filter can be placed under fluoroscopy for a pregnant woman with deep vein thrombosis (DVT) for whom antico

PURPOSE: Ultrasonography of the airway has potential as an alternative, non-invasive, method to monitor patients with subglottic stenosis in an outpatient setting. This prospective, interventional, double-blinded study aimed to correlate ultrasound-based and laryngoscopy-based subglottic stenosis assessment in adults.
METHODS: The study was conducted between July 2020 and March 2021 at a tertiary referral center. Consecutive adult patients with subglottic stenosis were evaluated using airway ultrasonography 1 day prior to scheduled laryngoscopy. The radiologist was blinded to the preoperative

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the use of transrectal ultrasonography (TRUS) for the assessment of prostatic tumors in dogs and to compare results for TRUS with results for other imaging modalities.
ANIMALS: 10 client-owned male dogs.
PROCEDURES: Client-owned dogs identified with prostatic carcinoma were enrolled. Fluoroscopy, transabdominal ultrasonography (TAUS), TRUS, and MRI were performed on all dogs. Tumor measurements, urethral penetration (identification of abnormal tissue within the urethral lumen), and tumor extension into the urinary tract were recorded for all imaging modalities. Agreeme

Iliac crest enthesopathy is an uncommon cause of function-limiting lateral hip pain with limited literature addressing its diagnosis and management. We present a case series of 8 adult patients with iliac crest/proximal gluteal pathology (6 degenerative, 1 posttraumatic, and 1 neoplastic) that highlights diagnostic challenges in this region. Our cases demonstrate the utility of musculoskeletal ultrasonography in both diagnosis and treatment of iliac crest enthesopathy. After reviewing relevant literature, we describe a novel ultrasound-guided surgical approach used in 5 patients in whom conser

Post-mortem oocyte collection serves to preserve the genetic material of valuable mares and to obtain recipient oocytes for cloning purposes. Therefore, the number of oocytes retrieved per ovary is a critical factor in increasing the likelihood of obtaining a viable embryo. This study evaluated the efficiency of two post-mortem oocyte retrieval techniques: follicular scraping (Scraping) and ultrasound-guided follicular aspiration (OPU). The comparison was based on several parameters, including the number of follicles aspirated per ovary, oocyte recovery rate (ORR), number of oocytes obtained p

INTRODUCTION: Before 2014, few Endocrinology and Nutrition Departments nationwide routinely used cervical ultrasound. Following the training activities promoted by the Thyroid Pathology Imaging Group, it is important to evaluate the current level of implementation of ultrasound and ultrasound-guided techniques in clinical practice.
MATERIAL AND METHODS: A structured, self-administered survey was designed and sent electronically to hospitals throughout the country.
RESULTS: Responses were received from a total of 101 hospitals. Ninety-three percent of the departments surveyed reported routine

BACKGROUND: Zygomatic arch (ZA) fractures are a common facial fracture, and reduction is typically performed blind via a Gillies or Keen approach. Postoperative confirmation of reduction thus requires advanced imaging, which may not be readily available in all settings. Thus, there exists a need for an effective, low-cost imaging paradigm to employ in these clinical scenarios. Herein, we introduce the ultrasonic arch reduction (USA Reduction) for ZA fractures.
METHODS: All consecutive patients with ZA fractures undergoing a USA Reduction at a single public hospital were reviewed. Patients wer

OBJECTIVES: This study evaluates the impact of an upper-limb ultrasound surgery diploma on surgical practices, specifically assessing how this specialized training influences the adoption and application of ultrasound techniques in upper limb surgeries.
MATERIAL AND METHODS: A comprehensive survey was conducted from August to November 2023, targeting individuals who completed the upper-limb ultrasound surgery diploma program between 2013 and 2023. The survey, distributed online, comprised 31 questions spanning demographic information, professional background, specifics about the diploma progr

Hysteroscopy stands as the gold-standard approach for managing intrauterine pathology. However, in complex clinical cases, hysteroscopic evaluation alone may prove insufficient for the safest and successful patient management. Intraoperative ultrasound (IOUS) has emerged as a valuable adjunct to hysteroscopic surgery, offering real-time visualization of endometrial cavity, uterine walls and instruments within the uterine cavity, enabling precise delineation of anatomical structures, and helping to assess the extent of pathology during intricate interventions. This review aims to comprehensivel
