Terminal U≡E (E = N, P, As, Sb, and Bi) bonds in uranium complexes: a theoretical perspective.

The compound L-U-N [L = [N(CH2CH2NSiPr(i)3)3](3-), Pr(i) = CH(CH3)2] containing a terminal U-N triple bond has been synthesized and isolated successfully in experiments. To investigate the trend in the bonding nature of its pnictogen analogues, we have studied the L-U-E (E = N, P, As, Sb, and Bi) complexes using the scalar relativistic density functional theory. The terminal U-E multiple bond length increases in the order of U-N ≪ U-P < U-As < U-Sb < U-Bi, which can be supported by the hard and soft acids and bases (HSAB) theory. The U-E bond length, molecular orbital (MO), and natural bond or

[Effects of chronic uranium internal exposure on mortality: results of a pilot study among French nuclear workers].

BACKGROUND: This article presents the mortality data compiled among a cohort of workers at risk of internal uranium exposure and discusses the extent to which this exposure might differentiate them from other nuclear workers. METHODS: The cohort consisted of 2897 Areva-NC-Pierrelatte plant workers, followed from 1st January 1968 through 31st December 2006 (79,892 person-years). Mortality was compared with that of the French population, by calculating Standardized Mortality Ratios (SMR) and 95% confidence intervals (CI95%). External radiation exposure was reconstructed using external dosimetry…

Complexation of europium and uranium by humic acids analyzed by capillary electrophoresis-inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry.

Investigations of the mobility of radioactive and nonradioactive substances in the environment are important tasks for the development of a future disposal in deep geological formations. Dissolved organic matter (DOM) can play an important role in the mobilization of metal ions due to complexation. In this study, we investigate the complexation behavior of humic acid (HA) as a model substance for DOM and its influence on the migration of europium as homologue for the actinide americium and uranium as the principal component of nuclear fuel. As speciation technique, capillary electrophoresis (C…

Renal function in mice poisoned with oral uranium and treated with ethane-1-hydroxy-1,1-bisphosphonate (EHBP).

Exposure to uranium is a risk for the workers involved in uranium mining, purification, and manufacture, principally by its ingestion or inhalation. It is also a risk for the population at large in case of intake of contaminated water or food. Uranium induces nephropathy that is characteristic of heavy metals, which can lead to death. The toxic effects of uranium can be prevented by a biphosphonate, ethane-1-hydroxy-1,1-bisphosphonate (bisodic etidronate), administered orally or subcutaneously. Employing bisodic etidronate, our laboratory obtained satisfactory results in terms of survival in a…

An update of mortality from all causes among white uranium miners from the Colorado Plateau Study Group.

To place previously recognized mortality risks into the context of the total mortality from all causes, an updated retrospective cohort mortality study was conducted on 3,238 white males from the US Public Health Service cohort of Colorado Plateau uranium miners. Vital status was followed from 1960 through 1990. Life-table analyses used combined New Mexico, Arizona, Utah, and Colorado mortality rates for external comparison and mortality risks within the lowest radon-exposure or duration-employed category for internal comparison. Significantly elevated SMRs were found for pneumoconioses (SMR =…

Toxicity, Cellular Uptake, and Intracellular Fate of Particulate and Dissolved Uranium in Murine Lung-Relevant Cell Models.

Uranium dioxide (UO2) particles pose an inhalation hazard in occupational and environmental exposure scenarios, yet their cellular interactions and toxicological behavior remain poorly defined. This study investigated the dissolution behavior and colloid-forming potential of UO2 in cell culture media, and compared the cytotoxicity, inflammatory response, and intracellular fate with those from equivalent aqueous uranium (U(aq)) exposures in murine RAW264.7 macrophages and Mlg2908 lung fibroblasts in vitro. In cell culture media, UO2 exhibited low solubility and limited colloid formation (∼5% co…

Potential-driven balance of extracellular electron transfer activity and microstructure stability in Shewanella biofilm for uranium recovery.

Bioelectrochemistry enables uranium recovery from uranium-contaminated water. Within microbial electrolysis cells (MECs), electroactive biofilm growth is critical, but the impact of electrode potential on biofilm structure and function remains unknown. This study explored variations in micro-structure, extracellular electron transfer, and uranium recovery of Shewanella oneidensis MR-1 biofilms cultivated under different potential shocks from -0.2 to 0.6 V (vs Ag/AgCl) in MECs at -0.2 V. Across this range, uranium recovery exhibited a clear non-monotonic trend, peaking at 0.2 V and exhibiting t…

Graphene oxide-facilitated uranium transport and release in saturated medium: Effect of ionic strength and medium structure.

Natural subsurface environment is a complex heterogeneous system. To investigate the effect of ionic strength (IS) and heterogeneity on the transport and remobilization of graphene oxide (GO)-facilitated uranium (U(VI)) in saturated porous media, column experiments were performed by the injection of U(VI) alone and U(VI)+GO mixtures into homogeneous and heterogeneous porous media under low and high ionic strength (1 and 50 mM) conditions, and then the columns were successively flushed with background solution and DI water. Results showed that when U(VI) only was introduced into the columns, IS…

Co-expression of YieF and PhoN in Deinococcus radiodurans R1 improves uranium bioprecipitation by reducing chromium interference.

Overexpression of the enzyme phosphatase (PhoN/PhoK) in the radiation-resistant bacterium Deinococcus radiodurans could be an efficient strategy for uranium remediation. However, the presence of other metals in nuclear wastes often interferes with uranium bioprecipitation. In our study, the uranium-precipitating ability of the PhoN-expressing D. radiodurans strain (Deino-phoN) significantly decreased by 45.4% in 13 h in the presence of chromium (VI); however, it was partially recovered after supplementation with chromium (III). Therefore, the reduction of chromium (VI) to chromium (III) was ob…

Circulatory disease in French nuclear fuel cycle workers chronically exposed to uranium: a nested case-control study.

OBJECTIVES: There is growing evidence of an association between low-dose external γ-radiation and circulatory system diseases (CSDs), yet sparse data exist about an association with chronic internal uranium exposure and the role of non-radiation risk factors. We conducted a nested case-control study of French AREVA NC Pierrelatte nuclear workers employed between 1960 and 2005 to estimate CSD risks adjusting for major CSD risk factors (smoking, blood pressure, body mass index, total cholesterol and glycaemia) and external γ-radiation dose. METHODS: The study included 102 cases of death from CS…

Isolation and Identification of Uranium Tolerant Phosphate-Solubilizing Bacillus spp. and Their Synergistic Strategies to U(VI) Immobilization.

The remediation of uranium (U) through phosphate-solubilizing bacteria (PSB) is an emerging technique as well as an interesting phenomenon for transforming mobile U into stable minerals in the environment. While studies are well needed for in-depth understanding of the mechanism of U(VI) immobilization by PSB. In this study, two PSB were isolated from a U-tailing repository site. These bacterial strains (ZJ-1 and ZJ-3) were identified as Bacillus spp. by the sequence analysis of 16S ribosomal RNA (rRNA) genes. Incubation of PSB in liquid medium showed that the isolate ZJ-3 could solubilize mor…

Trivalent Uranium Complex As a Catalyst to Promote the Functionalization of Carbon Dioxide and Carbon Disulfide: A Computational Mechanistic Study.

We report our recent DFT mechanistic study on the functionalization of CO2 and CS2 promoted by a trivalent uranium complex (Tp*)2UCH2Ph. In the calculations, the uranium atom is described by a quasi-relativistic 5f-in-core ECP basis set (LPP) developed for the trivalent uranium cation, which was qualified by the calculations with a quasi-relativistic small core ECP basis set (SPP) for uranium. According to our calculations, the functionalization proceeds in a stepwise manner, and the CO2 or CS2 does not interact with the central uranium atom to form a stable complex prior to the reaction due t…
