The study included 30 patients with surface cancer of the urinary bladder stage TA-T1 G1-3. BACKGROUND: CDX1 and CDX2 are transcription factors involved in the development and maintenance of the intestinal epithelial cell. Expression of CDX2 has been reported in normal and metaplastic intestinal epithelium, and in those adenocarcinomas with that cellular origin. We have analyzed the expression of this marker in reactive and tumoral lesions arising in urinary bladder, urethra and urachus.

Urinary bladder involvement by prostatic adenocarcinoma (PAC) is not well characterized in the literature. Fifteen consecutive cases of PAC diagnosed in the urinary bladder over a period of 10 years were reviewed. All bladder and prostate slides from each patient were evaluated. An 8-hour-old Standardbred filly was evaluated because of an enlarging umbilical mass and stranguria. It was suspected that the mass was the urinary bladder; this was confirmed on surgical exploration of the abdomen. Urinary tract calculi composed primarily of xanthine are rate both in adults and children. We describe the clinical presentation and management of a 3.5-year-old boy with hereditary xanthinuria (an autosomal recessive disorder of purine metabolism) and primary bladder calculus formed from xanthine. To our knowledge this case demonstrates a previously undescribed form of xanthinuria in childhood. Xanthine stones, although rare, should be considered in the diagnosis of urolithiasis.

We present a 37-year-old patient with primary choriocarcinoma arising in the urinary bladder, who received 5 months of intensive chemotherapy with a very good response. He died of a pulmonary embolus before his treatment could be completed. A post-mortem examination revealed extensive necrotic nodules in the lungs and brain. A case of villous adenoma of the urinary bladder is described. The patient, a 57-year-old Chinese male, presented with a long-term history of urethral stricture disease secondary to gonorrhea urethritis. On cystoscopic examination, a mucin-secreting papillary tumor, measuring 3 x 2 cm was noted at the bladder neck. Microscopically, there were papillary fronds of mucin-secreting columnar cells with varying degrees of piling up. The relationships between chronic irritation of the urinary bladder, cystitis glandularis, intestinal metaplasia, villous adenoma and adenocarcinoma were discussed.

Bladder distention is an infrequently reported cause of venous obstruction that may be confused clinically with deep venous thrombosis or congestive heart failure. The relationship between selected urinary tract and genital diseases and the risk of bladder cancer was analyzed using data from a case-control study of 364 cases of bladder cancer and 447 controls hospitalized for acute, nonneoplastic, nongenital tract conditions, unrelated to known or suspected risk factors for bladder cancer.
