Urinary incontinence is a common problem among women worldwide, resulting in a substantial economic burden and decreased quality of life. The Women's Preventive Services Initiative is the only major organization that recommends annual screening for urinary incontinence in all women despite low to insufficient evidence regarding effectiveness and accuracy of methods. No other major organization endorses screening. Initial evaluation should include determining whether incontinence is transient or chronic; the subtype of incontinence; and identifying any red flag findings that warrant subspeciali…

CASE DESCRIPTION: A 5-year-old spayed female Maltese mixed-breed dog was referred for evaluation because of severe urinary incontinence refractory to medical management.
CLINICAL FINDINGS: Physical examination revealed constant dribbling of urine and urine scalding. Culture of a urine sample yielded methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus pseudintermedius and Proteus mirabilis. Abdominal ultrasonographic examination revealed absence of the left kidney, a small, nondistended urinary bladder, and diffuse hepatopathy. Urinary incontinence persisted despite appropriate antimicrobial treatment. Cysto…

INTRODUCTION: Obesity is an important modifiable etiological factor associated with several diseases. There is strong evidence that urinary incontinence (UI) is positively correlated with body mass index (BMI).
AIM: One of the many benefits experienced by obese patients after bariatric surgery is decrease in UI. To investigate this correlation, we aimed to examine the effects of weight loss on UI in female patients who had undergone laparoscopic sleeve gastrectomy (LSG).
MATERIALS AND METHODS: Obese female patients (n=120), ≥18 years of age, and planning to undergo LSG were included in this …

Mixed urinary incontinence is a common diagnosis among women with urinary leakage and is often present in women who are unable to characterize their incontinence. Research and optimized clinical treatment of these patients is limited by the challenges in objectively defining and stratifying this population. The evaluation of these patients should follow the same general principles as any assessment of any women with incontinence; however, it is essential to define whether urge or stress incontinence is the predominant symptom. Urodynamics (UDS) may be helpful in this regard and may help predic…

OBJECTIVE: Owing to evolution in treatment, the average life expectancy of patients with cystic fibrosis (CF) has increased. This has been followed by an increase in urological complications such as urinary incontinence. As stress incontinence occurs during exercise, it may have a negative effect on the implementation of respiratory physiotherapy. The purpose of this study is to determine the prevalence of urinary incontinence and its effect on the quality of life and physiotherapy in a population with CF.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: Questionnaires were used to determine the prevalence of incontin…

Male lower urinary tract symptoms (LUTS) occur more frequently with increasing age. LUTS can either be caused by benign prostatic syndrome (BPS) and consecutive subvesical obstruction as well as detrusor hyperactivity. On the other hand, stress urinary incontinence is mostly seen after surgical intervention in the pelvis like radical prostatectomy. Also high volume centers report persisting incontinence rates of 2-4 % after radical prostatectomy. The diagnostic procedure in men with LUTS is divided in two steps: basic diagnostics, followed by a conservative treatment option, and extended diagno…

BACKGROUND: Urinary incontinence has a negative impact on quality of life and often remains untreated due to low levels of self-reporting. Urinary incontinence is seen in cystic fibrosis associated bronchiectasis but little data are available for non-cystic fibrosis associated bronchiectasis.
METHOD: In 2007 a new non-cystic fibrosis bronchiectasis service for patients aged 18 years and over was started within the Newcastle upon Tyne Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust. During the establishment of a new adult bronchiectasis service, patients were specifically asked about symptoms of incontinence, …

Stress urinary incontinence is common and affects many women globally. About 50% of women with urinary incontinence report symptoms of stress incontinence, but estimates of the prevalence and incidence are limited by inconsistent methods of measurement between epidemiologic studies in different populations. Estimates also are affected by underlying differences in the age and ethnicity of study populations. Longitudinal studies assessing the incidence and natural history of stress incontinence estimate an annual incidence of 4% to 10%. While remission does occur, data on this remains sparse. Mu…

Compared to female urinary incontinence, the prevalence and socioeconomic impact of male urinary incontinence has not gained much attention from epidemiologists. Moreover, the few available epidemiological surveys vary in their use of definitions and methodology, which are known to have great impact on the resulting prevalences. Therefore, the interpretation of the findings is difficult. Depending on definitions and methods, the prevalence of male urinary incontinence ranges between 5.4 and 15%. Urgency incontinence is the predominant subtype in all age groups, although the relative proportion…

The National Institute for Clinical Excellence (NICE) recommends that cystometry need not be performed prior to conservative therapy for incontinence in women, nor is cystometry routinely recommended in the small group of women with a clearly defined diagnosis of pure stress incontinence. This review highlights the arguments for and against this recommendation and also looks at the place of cystometry and pressure flow studies in the assessment and management of women with lower urinary tract dysfunction.

Urinary incontinence is an important and common health problem, whose prevalence increases with age. Often quality of life is clearly affected for persons concerned. In the group of elderly individuals (> or =60 years of age) 19.3% of women and 10.4% of men report urinary incontinence. Women most frequently describe urinary stress incontinence followed by incontinence with urge symptoms (urge incontinence, mixed incontinence). In men urinary incontinence without any symptoms of stress or urge incontinence is most common followed by incontinence with urge symptoms and stress incontinence. Urina…

The primary cause of stress incontinence is birth traumata. However, obesity, asthma, chronic constipation or hard physical work can also overtax the pelvic floor and lead to injury of the connective tissue and a slackening of the ligamentous apparatus. Pelvic floor defects are initially diagnosed simply through a thorough urogynaecological examination. To predict the success of a surgical treatment, the functions can be tested by performing simulated operations.

OBJECTIVES: The value of ultrasonography for the study of female urinary incontinence has been redefined over the last years.
METHODS: We review the literature about the value of ultrasound in the workup of females with urinary incontinence, mainly transperineal ultrasound for the female stress urinary incontinence (SUI).
RESULTS: Many papers have been published over the last few years. Upper urinary tract ultrasound has not a place in the workup of genuine female SUI. Transperineal ultrasound allows to evaluate the mobility of the bladder neck and urethra, the thickness of the bladder wall,…
