Postoperative urinary retention (POUR) is a disruptive complication after modern rapid recovery total joint arthroplasty. This review aims to synthesize the recent literature on POUR in the setting of total joint arthroplasty. The incidence of POUR ranges from 5.5% to 46.3%. The lack of a standardized definition of POUR accounts for some of this variability. Inverted papilloma of the urinary tract is a rare benign lesion. A 59-year-old male who presented with the chief complaint of gross hematuria and acute urinary retention is described. Uterine leiomyomas are an extremely rare cause of acute urinary retention in women. The delay in diagnosing uterine leiomyomas presenting with acute urinary retention further complicates the management. The rarity of the condition makes it difficult to plan either prospective or retrospective trials. Hence, most of the evidence comes from case reports or series. We report a case series of acute urinary retention in women with uterine leiomyomas and discuss the pathophysiology, diagnosis and management options.

Acute urinary retention (AUR) is a common presentation to emergency departments. This article updates the reader on the appropriate management, investigations and guidelines for AUR. It looks at the mechanism of normal micturition and describes the theories of AUR. It outlines urethral catheterization techniques for difficult cases, reviews suprapubic catheterization procedures and describes the management of AUR in polytrauma. Although emergency management is by bladder drainage, key points in the history and examination may expose significant, latent pathologies.

Leiomyoma is a benign smooth muscle tumor which is rarely found in the paraurethral region. We report a case of a 62-year-old Japanese-Australian woman with progressive supranuclear palsy (PSP) who presented with prominent urinary retention, neurogenic changes in sphincter electromyography, and obstructive sleep apnea syndrome. Urodynamic study revealed a combination of detrusor overactivity during filling and underactivity during voiding. All these non-motor symptoms in PSP mimicked those of multiple system atrophy.

We present a case of adenocarcinoma arising in a urethral diverticulum. A 71-year-old woman presented with urinary retention and a mass in the anterior vaginal wall. A biopsy was performed and revealed adenocarcinoma. Anterior pelvic exenteration with continent urinary diversion was performed followed by adjuvant radiation therapy as the tumor was large and poorly differentiated. She developed stomal stenosis and underwent stomal revision. The patient has done well since, with no evidence of recurrence at 1-year follow-up at the time of this report.

The authors report an unusual case of Wilms' tumor. The tumor grew transureterally into the urinary bladder, became dislodged, and presented as recurrent urinary infection with retention of urine after the child underwent nephroureterectomy. Such a presentation has not been reported earlier.

OBJECTIVE: Acute urinary retention (AUR) causes bilateral renal obstruction, which has been found to affect kidney function. This study evaluated both glomerular and tubular renal function in the long term after the resolution of AUR.
