Effects of Noise Exposure on Video Ocular Counter Roll Measurements.

PURPOSE: The purpose of this study was to evaluate the effect of noise exposure on otolith function measures of video ocular counter roll (vOCR), ocular vestibular evoked myogenic potential (oVEMP), cervical VEMP (cVEMP), and subjective visual vertical (SVV). Additionally, this study compared the vOCR results with other otolith function measures: cVEMP, oVEMP, and SVV. METHOD: This was a cross-sectional, between-group prospective study that compared otolith function tests between noise exposure groups. Thirty-three adults between the ages of 40-60 years with no middle ear pathology, history o

Is endolymphatic hydrops, as detected in MRI, a truly cochleocentric finding?

INTRODUCTION: The most common histopathological finding in Ménière's disease (MD) is endolymphatic hydrops (EH), which involves the dilation … ore vestibular symptoms. Delayed Ménière's disease was linked to the CC group. The hearing loss and vestibular function tests did not show significant differences between the groups. DISCUSSION: In conclusion, our study found that endolymphatic hydrops (EH) was more severe in the vestibule than in the cochlea in nearly 60% of the cases, with a clinical correlation to the …

Efficacy of intracochlear administration of betamethasone on peripheral vestibular disorder in the guinea pig.

We evaluated the effect of steroid hormone on vestibular function in a guinea pig of peripheral vestibular disorder. The right lateral semicircular canal was surgically damaged, and after surgery, animals were treated with 0.1 mg/ml of betamethasone in saline, 1 mg/ml of betamethasone in saline, or saline only, which was administrated directly into the scala tympani by osmotic pump. Rotation tests were performed, and the post-rotatory nystagmus (PRN) ratio (PRN number after counterclockwise rotation/PRN number after clockwise rotation) was calculated. The PRN ratio was recovered to normal at 5

Structural changes in the human brain following vestibular neuritis indicate central vestibular compensation.

Vestibular neuritis (VN) is a sudden unilateral vestibular failure (UVF) with a variable course. Caloric hyporesponsiveness often persists, and it is largely unknown why patients with the same degree of hyporesponsiveness show different functional recovery. As the peripheral vestibular deficit alone does not seem to determine functional recovery, it was the aim of this study to elucidate whether structural (morphological) brain changes (1) contribute to central vestibular compensation, and (2) account for the variability of clinical recovery in VN. Structural global gray-matter volume (GMV) ch

Vestibular-evoked myogenic potentials in central vestibular disorders.

Vestibular-evoked myogenic potentials (VEMPs) are short latency manifestations of vestibulo-ocular and vestibulocollic reflexes that origina … ating central as well as peripheral otolithic function that are not readily defined by conventional vestibular function tests, and can aid in detecting and localizing central lesions, especially silent brainstem lesions such as tiny infarctions or MS plaques.

Visuo-vestibular interaction measurements: an alternative for rotation tests with better discriminatory power?

A vestibular function test is introduced for evaluating visuo-vestibular interaction (VVI), in which a visual target may move asynchronously with a pseudo-randomly oscillating rotatory chair. The results show better discrimination of patients (Meniere's disease, benign paroxysmal positioning vertigo (BPPV), uncompensated peripheral vestibular lesions. whiplash) than do standard tests (torsion swing, velocity step, calorization, smooth pursuit, optokinetics, saccade analysis). For the phase shift, the better performance is shown to stem from improved reproducibility. Signal analysis is done ful

Vestibular neurology for the generalist.

This review of vestibular neurology for the general neurologist delves into the multifaceted realm of vestibular neurology where we address the diagnostic and therapeutic challenges associated with dizziness, vertigo and balance disorders. We outline the standard vestibular assessments that can be understood and incorporated by the generalist, discussing their use in common vestibular disorders. Key disorders covered include acute and chronic syndromes, benign paroxysmal positional vertigo, Meniere disease, vestibular migraine and persistent postural-perceptual dizziness. We also touch on emer

A Cross-Sectional Study on the Effect of Chronic Noise Exposure on the Vestibular Function of Traffic Policemen and Automobile Drivers.

INTRODUCTION: Noise is a preventable occupational hazard for certain professions like automobile drivers and traffic police personnel. The harmful auditory effects of noise are well known. However, little is known about the status of the vestibular function in chronic noise exposure without noise induced hearing loss. Our objective was to assess the vestibular function in chronic noise exposure. METHODOLOGY: : The study was conducted with a sample size of 242 (chronic noise exposure group - 121, group without chronic noise exposure - 121). Noise estimation was carried out across various traff

International Clinical Protocol on Vestibular Disorders (Dizziness).

26-28 May at 43 Congress of Neurootological and Equilibriometric Society (Budapest, Hungary) International Clinical Protocol on Vestibular Disorders (Dizziness) being discussed and accepted as Consensus Document. Cochrane reports estimates that dizziness has prevalence of 22.9% in the last 12 months and an incidence of 3.1%. Only 1.8% of adults consulted a physician in the last 12 months. Cochrane reviews suggest that the evidence base for dizziness evaluation is weak, thus necessitates the creation of evidence-based document. Protocol is based at the new concept of vestibular system, which in

Centric and eccentric VOR tests in patients with Menière's disease and vestibular Menière's disease.

Pendular rotation in the eccentric position produces the same angular stimulation as that in conventional pendular rotation and, in addition, involves linear centrifugal and tangential acceleration forces which act on the otolith organs. In the eccentric position, normal subjects showed an increase in gain at 0.64 Hz, when compared with the gain with the head in the centered position. Therefore, we concluded that it is possible to diagnose otolith dysfunction by this comparison. In this study, we applied centric and eccentric pendular rotation tests to patients with Menière's disease and vesti

Behavioral assessment of the aging mouse vestibular system.

Age related decline in balance performance is associated with deteriorating muscle strength, motor coordination and vestibular function. While a number of studies show changes in balance phenotype with age in rodents, very few isolate the vestibular contribution to balance under either normal conditions or during senescence. We use two standard behavioral tests to characterize the balance performance of mice at defined age points over the lifespan: the rotarod test and the inclined balance beam test. Importantly though, a custom built rotator is also used to stimulate the vestibular system of

Superior divisional vestibular paresis in anterior inferior cerebellar artery infarction.

A 74-year-old woman with sudden vertigo and dysarthria showed spontaneous nystagmus beating rightward, upward and clockwise. She also exhibited dysfunction of the left utricle and superior and horizontal canals, which was documented by head impulse and heave tests, measurements of ocular torsion and subjective visual vertical tilt, bithermal caloric tests, and rotation axis analysis of the spontaneous nystagmus. In contrast, functions of the left posterior canal, saccule, and cochlea were remained intact, as evidenced by normal head impulse test, audiometry and vestibular evoked myogenic poten

Peripheral Vestibular and Balance Function in Athletes With and Without Concussion.

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: According to the most recent consensus statement on management of sport-related concussion (SRC), athletes with suspected SRC should receive a comprehensive neurological examination. However, which measures to include in such an examination are not defined. Our objectives were to (1) evaluate test-retest reliability and normative data on vestibular and balance tests in athletes without SRC; (2) compare athletes with and without SRC on the subtests; and (3) identify subtests for concussion testing protocols. METHODS: Healthy athletes (n = 87, mean age 20.6 years; standa
