The development of a testosterone stimulation test in the Virginia opossum (Didelphis virginiana) and its use in evaluating deslorelin contraception.

The aims of the present study were to examine the variability of testosterone secretion in the Virginia Opossum over a 24 h period and to develop a testosterone stimulation test that would provide an index of the prevailing testosterone biosynthetic capacity of the testes; the latter was used to clinically evaluate the efficacy of a gonadotrophin-releasing hormone agonist contraceptive. Sexually-mature captive opossums (n = 12) located in Africam Safari (Mexico) sampled every 12 h over 24 h consistently showed basal (<0.21 ng mL(-1)) blood testosterone concentrations. Intra-muscular injection

The impact of prenatal care on fetal and neonatal death rates for uninsured patients: a "natural experiment" in West Virginia.

A three-county program in southern West Virginia was developed by an obstetric practice to deliver prenatal care to a population of uninsured patients. Between January 1984 and December 1986, 1331 (29.4%) of 4534 patients were delivered at a level 2 hospital after prenatal care within the clinic program. The hospital-wide fetal death ratio declined from 11.8 to 7.2 per 1000 live births during the years of clinic operation, a statistically significant reduction (P = .02). Uninsured patients experienced a statistically significant reduction in fetal death ratio during the program, from 35.4 to 7

Finding crime in a public health crisis: a comparative analysis of opioid news coverage in West Virginia and Vermont.

BACKGROUND: Under what conditions do newspapers reference crime or law enforcement in their coverage of opioids in the United States? This study examines how crime framing varies across political contexts, time periods, and drug types in newspaper coverage of opioids. METHODS: The study analyzed 2,400 newspaper headlines, including 1,200 from Vermont and 1,200 from West Virginia. For each state, half the headlines were identified using the search term "oxycodone" and half using "fentanyl." Headlines were coded for the presence of crime frames. RESULTS: Bivariate analyses showed that West Vir

Detection of macropodid alphaherpesvirus 2 infection and lesions in sudden death of a captive Virginia opossum and a water opossum.

Macropodid alphaherpesvirus 2 (MaAHV2) is best described in macropods and has been implicated in outbreaks among captive marsupial populations in Australia. Natural disease caused by herpesviruses has not been reported previously in opossum species, to our knowledge. One Virginia opossum (Didelphis virginiana) and 1 water opossum (Chironectes minimus) were submitted for postmortem examination from a zoo that housed 6 opossums, all of which died within several weeks. Red kangaroos (Macropus rufus) and red-necked wallabies (Macropus rufogriseus) were also present at the facility. Liver samples f

Qualitative Case Study of Public Health Preparedness and Response to the Rabid Raccoon Discovered in Wise County, Virginia.

Rabies is a zoonotic lyssavirus of mammals that is a major public health threat due to the high mortality rate in humans who develop clinical symptoms. In the United States and other developed countries, the main reservoirs are wildlife species. In April 2017, a raccoon tested positive for rabies in Wise County, Virginia, with a second raccoon testing positive in May. Wise County, Virginia, is one of the few counties in western Virginia that is not endemic for raccoon rabies variant virus. Due to this fact, local, state, and federal agencies worked together to prevent and control the outbreak

Prior Sexual Trauma and Adjustment Following the Virginia Tech Campus Shootings: Examination of the Mediating Role of Schemas.

A sizable body of research supports trauma's cumulative nature. However, few studies have evaluated potential mechanisms through which the experience of multiple traumas leads to elevated distress. The current study sought to evaluate differences between sexual trauma victims and women who had not experienced sexual trauma in their adjustment following a mass trauma (college women exposed to the 2007 Virginia Tech campus shooting). In addition, the study examined whether maladaptive schema change (lower self-worth and less belief in benevolence) and social support mediated the relationship bet

Resource loss as a predictor of posttrauma symptoms among college women following the mass shooting at Virginia Tech.

We examined risk factors for posttrauma symptomatology, 2 and 6 months following the April 2007 mass shooting at Virginia Tech. Using a conservation of resources framework and a Web-based survey methodology, we prospectively evaluated the relations among preshooting distress, social support, resource loss, and posttrauma symptomatology in a sample of 293 female students enrolled at the university at the time of the shootings. Structural equation modeling supported that preshooting social support and distress predicted resource loss postshooting. Resource loss predicted symptomatology 2 months

Incidence of colorectal cancer in West Virginia from 1993-1999: an update by gender, age, subsite and stage.

The sensitivities of different screening methods for pre-cancerous adenomas may affect the apparent anatomical distribution of colorectal cancers. Our objective was to describe changes in the distribution of left and right-sided colon cancers by time while adjusting for age, gender, stage and year of diagnosis. We studied the 7,895 cases of colorectal cancer reported to the West Virginia Cancer Registry between 1993 and 1999 and termed cancers proximal to, but not including the sigmoid colon as "right-sided," and the remaining tumors as "left-sided." Multivariate analyses were used to differen

A common DLX3 gene mutation is responsible for tricho-dento-osseous syndrome in Virginia and North Carolina families.

Tricho-dento-osseous syndrome (TDO) is characterised by a variable clinical phenotype primarily affecting the hair, teeth, and bone. Different clinical features are observed between and within TDO families. It is not known whether the variable clinical features are the result of genetic heterogeneity or clinical variability. A gene for TDO was localised recently to chromosome 17q21 in four North Carolina families, and a 4 bp deletion in the human distal-less 3 gene (DLX3) was identified in all affected members. A previous genetic linkage study in a large Virginia kindred with TDO indicated pos

Impact of viral respiratory diseases on infants and young children in a rural and urban area of southern West Virginia.

Acute viral respiratory disease occurring in children residing in the community of Huntington, West Virginia (urban children) or in the hollows surrounding Huntington (rural children) was evaluated from September 1978 through March 1980. Cohorts of ambulatory children residing in each area were studied for the occurrence of mild to moderate respiratory disease. All children admitted to hospitals were evaluated for the occurrence of severe viral respiratory disease. Respiratory secretions were obtained from children for isolation of viruses. Epidemics of illnesses occurred simultaneously in the

Emerging babesiosis in the mid-Atlantic: autochthonous human babesiosis cases and Babesia microti (Piroplasmida: Babesiidae) in Ixodes scapularis (Acari: Ixodidae) and Ixodes keiransi (Acari: Ixodidae) ticks from Delaware, Maryland, Virginia, West Virginia, and the District of Columbia, 2009 to 2024.

The range of Babesia microti (Franca, 1910)-infected ticks is expanding, resulting in locally acquired human babesiosis cases occurring in new areas: Maryland (2009), the District of Columbia (2013), Virginia (2016), and West Virginia (2017). We collected host-seeking ticks from old fields, ecotones, forested habitats and animal hosts in Delaware, Maryland, and Virginia, 2010 to 2024. Ixodes scapularis Say, the tick vector of babesiosis, was captured in all 3 states. PCR revealed B. microti in 2.7% (36/1310) of I. scapularis, with site prevalence ranging from <1% to 12.5% infected. The first B

Drinking water sources, quality, and associated health outcomes in Appalachian Virginia: A risk characterization study in two counties.

OBJECTIVES: In the US, violations of drinking water regulations are highest in lower-income rural areas overall, and particularly in Central Appalachia. However, data on drinking water use, quality, and associated health outcomes in rural Appalachia are limited. We sought to assess public and private drinking water sources and associated risk factors for waterborne pathogen exposures for individuals living in rural regions of Appalachian Virginia. METHODS: We administered surveys and collected tap water, bottled water, and saliva samples in lower-income households in two adjacent rural counti

Single-center experience on progressive multifocal leukoencephalopathy (PML) cases, neuroimaging relevance, and management at West Virginia University (WVU).

Progressive multifocal leukoencephalopathy (PML) is an increasingly common and rapidly fatal demyelinating infection of central nervous system caused by the highly prevalent John Cunningham (JC) virus in immunocompromised individuals belonging to all age groups and genders. Human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) is the most common predisposing factor among other immunodeficient conditions leading to reactivation and multiple neurological symptoms. It has varied findings on magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) and diagnosis is confirmed by positive JC virus in cerebrospinal fluid (CSF). We report 12 co

Engaging stakeholders through social media and emergent organizations: The West Virginia Water Crisis Recovery as a case study.

The West Virginia water contamination crisis began on the morning of January 9, 2014, and left approximately 300,000 customers of the West Virginia American Water Company unable to use the water in their homes for any purpose other than flushing their toilets. Given the lack of appropriate response from the established organizations involved, many emergent organizations formed to help fill unmet informational and physical needs of the affected population. Crisis researchers have observed these ephemeral organizations for decades, but the recent proliferation of information communication techno

Traumatic spinal cord injury in West Virginia: Disparities by insurance and discharge disposition from an acute care hospital.

Context: Medicaid has been linked to worse outcomes in a variety of diagnoses such as lung cancer, uterine cancer, and cardiac valve procedures. It has furthermore been linked to the reduced health-related quality of life outcomes after traumatic injuries when compared to other insurance groups. In spinal cord injury (SCI), the care provided in the subacute setting may vary based upon payor status, which may have implications on outcomes and cost of care.Design: A retrospective review utilizing the institutional trauma databank was performed for all adult patients with spinal cord injury since
