The role of eye movement driven attention in functional strabismic amblyopia.

Strabismic amblyopia "blunt vision" is a developmental anomaly that affects binocular vision and results in lowered visual acuity. Strabismus is a term for a misalignment of the visual axes and is usually characterized by impaired ability of the strabismic eye to take up fixation. Such impaired fixation is usually a function of the temporally and spatially impaired binocular eye movements that normally underlie binocular shifts in visual attention. In this review, we discuss how abnormal eye movement function in children with misaligned eyes influences the development of normal binocular visua

[Specifics of interactions of mono- and binocular mechanisms of spatial perception in cecutient children].

Interactions of mono- and binocular mechanisms of spatial perception were estimated using stereokinetic test proposed by L.N. Mogilev in 117 children with low vision and 317 healthy children aged 5-18 years old. Cecutient and healthy children had similar values of steriokinetic illusion in monocular visual conditions, while in binocular visual conditions the results were significantly different. It was shown that in children with low vision there is no increase in contribution of binocular mechanisms with aging. The mean value of coefficient K characterizing this contribution in healthy group

Association between fine motor skills and binocular visual function in children with reading difficulties.

Performance of fine motor skills (FMS) assessed by a clinical test battery has been associated with reading achievement in school-age children. However, the nature of this association remains to be established. The aim of this study was to assess FMS in children with reading difficulties using two experimental tasks, and to determine if performance is associated with reduced binocular function. We hypothesized that in comparison to an age- and sex-matched control group, children identified with reading difficulties will perform worse only on a motor task that has been shown to rely on binocula

[Observations on sensory heterotropia].

The authors analysed the records of 73 cases with sensory heterotropia, and discussed the correlation between the age of sensory obstacles in sensory heterotropia and the type of heterotropia, the restores of binocular vision after surgical correction and the reversion of eye position. The authors suggested that sensory heterotropia should be treated as early as possible so that binocular vision could be restored.

The role of somatosensory input in target localization during binocular and monocular viewing while performing a high precision reaching and placement task.

Binocular vision provides the most accurate and precise depth information; however, many people have impairments in binocular visual function. It is possible that other sensory inputs could be used to obtain reliable depth information when binocular vision is not available. However, it is currently unknown whether depth information from another modality improves target localization in depth during action execution. Therefore, the goal of this study was to assess whether somatosensory input improves target localization during the performance of a precision placement task. Visually normal young

[The influence of ocular dominance on monovision--the interaction between binocular visual functions and the state of dominant eye's correction].

PURPOSE: To examine the interaction between binocular visual functions and the correction of the dominant eye, i.e., for far vs. near vision in monovision. SUBJECTS AND METHODS: Ten healthy subjects without any ophthalmological disease were examined. After cycloplegia, the eyes of the subjects were corrected by soft contact lenses (difference in lens power between the lenses: 2.5 D) with an artificial pupil(diameter: 3.0 mm). Visual acuity at various distances, contrast sensitivity, and near stereoacuity were measured while the dominant eye determined by the hole-in-card test (sighting domina

Blackout: Understanding transient vision loss.

BACKGROUND: Transient vision loss may indicate underlying disease of the eye, optic nerve, orbit, brain or heart. Detailed history-taking followed by a complete ocular and neurological examination is therefore a crucial part of any consultation. OBJECTIVE: It is important to determine whether a patient with transient vision loss can be reassured or requires urgent referral for further investigation. This review examines monocular and binocular transient vision loss and provides a structured approach to the examination of a patient with transient vision loss. The aim of this article is to prov

Does dominance of crossing retinal ganglion cells make the eyes cross? The temporal retina in the origin of infantile esotropia – a neuroanatomical and evolutionary analysis.

A closer look at the evolution of the eye and the brain provides a possible explanation for both the origin of infantile esotropia and its motor characteristics. In the course of evolution, the eyes have moved from a lateral to a frontal position. Consequently, the monocular visual fields started to overlap resulting in a binocular visual field. In lateral-eyed animals, the retinae project to the contralateral visual cortices only. These projections are also found in binocular mammals and birds with binocular visual fields but in addition there are uncrossed projections from the temporal retin

Identifying Absolute Preferred Retinal Locations during Binocular Viewing.

PURPOSE: We present a new method for identifying the absolute location (i.e., relative to the optic disc) of the preferred retinal location (PRL) simultaneously for the two eyes of patients with central vision loss. For this, we used a binocular eye-tracking system that determines the pupillary axes of both eyes without a user calibration routine. METHODS: During monocular viewing, we measured the pupillary axis and the angle between it and the visual axis (angle Kappa) for 10 eyes with normal vision. We also determined their fovea location relative to the middle of the optic disc with the MP

Receiver operating characteristic curve analysis of clinical signs for screening of convergence insufficiency in young adults.

Convergence insufficiency (CI) is a dysfunction of binocular vision that is associated with various signs and symptoms in near work. However, CI screening is performed less frequently in adults than in children. We aimed to evaluate the ability of screening tests to discriminate CI from other binocular vision anomalies and normal binocular vision in young adults. One hundred eighty-four university students (age, 18-28 years) who underwent an eye examination due to ocular discomfort were included. Near point of convergence (NPC), phoria, accommodative amplitude, fusional vergence, the ratio of

Influence of Binocular Visual Anomalies on Reading in First Grade School Children with High Visual Acuity.

The aim of this study was to describe the binocular visual status of first grade children with high binocular visual acuity. The results have shown that only 5.1% of children had normal binocular vision, 25.7% had only moderate and 67.9% had severe and moderate binocular anomalies. Significant differences were revealed between students with poor reading and with normal reading with respect to reduced convergence (P < 0.001), and mean scores of behavior symptom numbers, indicating the presence of binocular visual anomalies (P < 0.002).

Impairment of the binocular coordination of saccades in strabismus.

To examine the link between binocular vision and binocular coordination of saccades we studied subjects with convergent strabismus since childhood with mild or no amblyopia: three subjects had small squint (< 10 prism D) and preserved peripheral binocular visual function with gross stereopsis; four subjects had larger squint (18-35 prism D) and no detectable stereopsis. A standard paradigm was used to elicit horizontal saccades; binocular recordings were made with the IRIS device. For subjects with small strabismus, saccades were disconjugate (unequal between the two eyes) typically by 1 deg.

[Anomalous bilateral single vision in cases of severe squint deviation: investigations with Bagolini glasses (author's transl)].

Twenty patients with concomitant strabismus, ARC and a horizontal deviation of between 10 and 30 degrees (13 convergent, seven divergent) were examined with striated glasses to determine areas of anomalous simultaneous binocular vision. Such an area was found in a zone between the visual field centers of the two eyes in 18 cases. On the basis of these findings the authors suspect that harmonious ARC permits anomalous binocular vision only in field areas where retinal points with identical images have no significant difference in function. In the other areas of the binocular visual field, ARC p

Extended perceptive field revealed in humans with binocular fusion disorders.

Binocular vision disorders or dysfunctions have considerable impact on daily visual activities such as reading. Heterophoria (phoria) is a latent eye misalignment (with a prevalence of up to 35%) that appears in conditions that disrupt binocular vision and it may affect the quality of binocular fusion. Our recent study, which used lateral masking (LM), suggests that subjects with binocular fusion disorders (horizontal phoria) exhibit an asymmetry and an abnormal pattern of both binocular and monocular lateral interactions, but only for the horizontal meridian (HM). The perceptive field (PF) is
