Visual function with presbyopic contact lens correction.

All forms of ophthalmic correction for presbyopia require compromises in viewing flexibility and visual function. The unique effects on vision of contact lenses used in managing presbyopia are especially intriguing and potentially problematic. Bifocal contact lenses produce unique changes in the nature and quality of the retinal image. In monovision (MV) correction, anisometropia is intentionally created by fitting one eye to see clearly at optical infinity and the other eye to see clearly at the near working distance. Our review of the literature indicates that most visual functions are affec

A computer model for the evaluation of the effect of corneal topography on optical performance.

We developed a method that models the effect of irregular corneal surface topography on corneal optical performance. A computer program mimics the function of an optical bench. The method generates a variety of objects (single point, standard Snellen letters, low contrast Snellen letters, arbitrarily complex objects) in object space. The lens is the corneal surface evaluated by a corneal topography analysis system. The objects are refracted by the cornea by using raytracing analysis to produce an image, which is displayed on a video monitor. Optically degraded images are generated by raytracin

Ophthalmologic health status of an aging population-data from the Berlin Aging Study II (BASE-II).

PURPOSE: Vision of the elderly may be affected by typical age-related diseases like cataract and macular degeneration. Little is known about the effect of aging on visual difficulties and vision-related quality of life. This study was conducted to compare the ophthalmological health status of younger and older individuals within a large cohort study of residents of a greater metropolitan area (Berlin Aging Study II [BASE-II]). METHODS: A total of 1655 participants (805 men) aged 60 years and older and 494 participants (232 men) aged between 22 and 48 years from the Berlin Aging Study II were

An Analysis of Severe Ophthalmologic Complications Following Plastic and Cosmetic Procedures: Insights and Experience Sharing.

BACKGROUNDS: Although severe ocular complications following plastic and cosmetic surgeries or treatments are relatively uncommon, early diagnosis and intervention are essential for improving prognosis. This study investigates optimized strategies for the effective identification and management of these complications. METHODS: A retrospective study was conducted on 11 patients (10 female, 1male, mean age: 38.5) with severe ocular complications after plastic and aesthetic surgery or procedures treated at a single referral center between January 2014 and December 2024. Types of ocular complicati

Ocular complications of perioperative anesthesia: a review.

Ocular complications associated with anesthesia in ocular and non-ocular surgeries are rare adverse events which may present with clinical presentations vacillating between easily treatable corneal abrasions to more serious complication such as irreversible bilateral vision loss. In this review, we outline the different techniques of anesthetic delivery in ocular surgeries and highlight the incidence and etiologies of associated injuries. The changes in vision in non-ocular surgeries are mistaken for residual sedation or anesthetics, therefore require high clinical suspicion on part of the tre

Neuromuscular plasticity and rehabilitation of the ocular near response.

The near response is composed of cross-coupled interactions between convergence and other distance-related oculomotor responses including accommodation, vertical vergence, and cyclovergence. The cross-coupling interactions are analogous to the body postural reflexes that maintain balance. Near-response couplings guide involuntary motor responses during voluntary shifts of distance and direction of gaze without feedback from defocus or retinal-image disparity. They optimize the disparity stimulus for stereoscopic depth perception and can be modified by optically induced sensory demands placed o

Ocular responses to head rotations during mirror viewing.

The gain of the human vestibuloocular reflex (VOR) is influenced by the proximity of the object of regard. In six human subjects, we measured the eye rotations induced by passive, sinusoidal, horizontal head rotations at 2.0 Hz during binocular fixation of a stationary far target at 7 m; a stationary target close to the subject's near point of fixation (<15 cm); and the bridge of the subject's own nose, viewed through a mirror positioned so that, for each subject, the angle of vergence was similar to that during viewing of the near target. The median gain of compensatory eye movements for the

Behavioral Assessment of Vision in Dogs Using a Four-Alternative, Choice-Based Testing Device.

Dogs are important large animal models of human retinal disorders. Visual navigation ability is an important outcome measure with relevance to real-world conditions. Here we describe methods to conduct behavioral assessment of dog visual navigation ability in a variety of luminance conditions. This method is suitable as a therapeutic trial endpoint for gene therapy studies in dogs.

Visual discomfort and contact lens wear: A review.

The purpose of this manuscript is to describe how vision influences contact lens discomfort and review the evidence supporting the hypothesis that contact lens discomfort can be caused by vision and vision-related disorders. Contact lens discomfort is a misunderstood and difficult to manage clinical condition. Most treatments and strategies aimed at alleviating discomfort focus on optimizing the contact lens fit and its relationship with the ocular surface, but these strategies commonly fail at relieving discomfort symptoms. Many vision and vision-related disorders share symptoms with those re

Alfred Wilhelm Volkmann on stereoscopic vision.

Wheatstone's demonstration of binocular single vision and depth with stimulation of non-corresponding points reverberated throughout mid-nineteenth century German visual science. It challenged the received view that single vision was a consequence of retinal correspondence otherwise objects were seen double. Wheatstone also argued that stimulation of corresponding points could yield double vision. He interpreted his experimental observations in psychological rather than physiological terms, as did Helmholtz later. Volkmann addressed both of these challenges in a long article on stereoscopic vi

The striate cortex and hemianopia.

We begin with the functions of the striate cortex (area V1 of the visual cortex) and end with a review of the effects of damage to striate cortex or its inputs; namely, homonymous hemifield defects. Clinical and anatomical studies accrued over the past 25 years have modified our understanding of the role of V1 in vision. We discuss the evidence that V1 is not the sole recipient of visual signals; is not the earliest recipient of visual signals; and is not essential for conscious vision. In the second section, we give a brief history of how the visual field was found to be represented in striat

The repeatability and reproducibility of four techniques for measuring horizontal heterophoria: Implications for clinical practice.

PURPOSE: Convergence insufficiency, the most common binocular vision anomaly, is characterised by a receded near point of convergence and an exophoria which is at least 4 prism dioptres (Δ) larger at near than at distance. However, the repeatability of standard heterophoria measures are poorly understood. This study assessed the ability of four common heterophoria tests to detect differences of 4Δ by evaluating the inter- and intra-examiner variability of the selected techniques. METHODS: Distance and near horizontal heterophorias of 20 visually-normal adults were measured with the alternatin

Operation Everest II: lack of an effect of extreme altitude on visual contrast sensitivity.

Contrast sensitivity thresholds were studied over 40 d during gradual ascent to a simulated terrestrial altitude of 25,000 ft in a decompression chamber. Only ambient pressure, and thus inspired oxygen pressure, was varied, thereby eliminating many of the confounding effects of cold, dehydration, malnutrition and exhaustion, inevitably encountered on very high mountains. Contrast sensitivity thresholds measured by the Ginsburg Vistech test showed no overall impairment as altitude increased. These results are different from those of other previously reported vision studies involving shorter exp

Maldevelopment of convergence eye movements in macaque monkeys with small- and large-angle infantile esotropia.

PURPOSE: To describe symmetric convergence eye movements evoked by disparity and/or accommodative cues in esotropic macaque monkeys, with the goal of determining whether these animals have the vergence deficits found in humans with esotropia. METHODS: Physical far and near targets were used to evoke large (approximately 8 degrees) symmetric convergence eye movements in four adult macaque monkeys (two with strabismus, two normal), using positive-feedback rewards. One strabismic monkey had infantile-onset, small-angle esotropia (small-eso approximately 2 degrees) induced by alternating occlusio

Neuro-ophthalmic manifestations of cerebrovascular accidents.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: Ocular functions can be affected in almost any type of cerebrovascular accident (CVA) creating a burden on the patient and family and limiting functionality. The present review summarizes the different ocular outcomes after stroke, divided into three categories: vision, ocular motility, and visual perception. We also discuss interventions that have been proposed to help restore vision and perception after CVA. RECENT FINDINGS: Interventions that might help expand or compensate for visual field loss and visuospatial neglect include explorative saccade training, prisms, visua…
