[Visual acuity of military personnel with civilian or military driver's license on consulting an ophthalmologist].

Visual acuity was tested in 1861 members of the German armed forces who possessed military or civilian driving licences, first by means of a screening test (Roden-stock R12) and second by an ophthalmologist observing German Industrial Standard 58220, part 3. The tests were done with the patients wearing any corrective spectacles in use before the appointment. In 27.6% of all subjects the monocular or binocular visual acuity was less than 1.0. Binocular visual acuity less than 1.0 was found in 17.0%, less than 0.8 in 7.3% and less than 0.5 in 0.9%. After adjustment of the corrective lenses by t

A practical guide for colour-vision examination: report of the Standardization Committee of the International Research Group on Colour-Vision Deficiencies.

There are different types and degrees of colour deficiency and some types of defect occur more frequently than others. Several different techniques are used for examining colour vision and many different tests are available commercially. Clinical tests have three aims: to screen for colour deficiency, to diagnose or classify the type of defect and to grade the severity of the defect. Individual tests do not fulfil all three aims and a test battery is recommended for any detailed colour-vision examination or for giving occupational advice. This paper provides information about congenital and ac

Effectiveness of screening preschool children for amblyopia: a systematic review.

BACKGROUND: Amblyopia and amblyogenic factors like strabismus and refractive errors are the most common vision disorders in children. Although different studies suggest that preschool vision screening is associated with a reduced prevalence rate of amblyopia, the value of these programmes is the subject of a continuing scientific and health policy discussion. Therefore, this systematic review focuses on the question of whether screening for amblyopia in children up to the age of six years leads to better vision outcomes. METHODS: Ten bibliographic databases were searched for randomised contro…

Vision care requirements among intellectually disabled adults: a residence-based pilot study.

Intellectually disabled adults have an high incidence of visual problems and they are often unable to communicate their visual difficulties. At Lennox Castle and Waverley Park Hospitals, vision care is through referral by medical and nursing staff to designated optometrists and ophthalmologists. This practice has provided a good service when visual difficulties are noticed. The vision care requirements of all residents had not been comprehensively assessed and a new interdisciplinary procedure developed at Waverley Park Hospital had drawn attention to the fact that only 11% had been offered vi

An epidemiological study of the ocular and visual profiles of Oklahoma Cherokees and Minnesota Chippewas.

Over the last three decades some American Indian tribes in North America have received attention in the literature as a minority group with unique visual characteristics. Studies on the refractive status of Indians have shown an increase of refractive errors and particularly an abnormally high prevalence, and amount of, with-the-rule astigmatism. These changes appear to have taken place over the last 40 years. Eskimos, on the other hand, have recently showed an astoundingly high incidence of myopia. Other Native American tribes do not show dramatic changes in myopia or astigmatism. The Public

[Ophthalmologic examination of the mentally retarded at a central institution].

In 1985-86 an ophthalmologist screened 221 patients, ranging in age from six to 81, at Naerlandheimen central institution for mentally handicapped. The screening showed an alarming incidence of eye disease in this group, regardless of the etiology of the mental handicap or the patient's age. Only 44 patients had completely normal eye status without errors of refraction. 40 patients had errors of refraction only and eight had presbyopia only, but otherwise normal findings. 129 had one or more eye anomalies or diseases. There was a large incidence of cataract (52 cases), keratoconus (21 cases),

Childhood Eye Examination in Primary Care.

Approximately 7% of children in the United States younger than 18 years have a diagnosed eye disorder, and 1 in 4 children between two and 17 years of age wears glasses. Routine eye examinations during childhood can identify abnormalities necessitating referral to ophthalmology, which optimizes children's vision through the early diagnosis and treatment of abnormalities. The U.S. Preventive Services Task Force recommends vision screening at least once in children three to five years of age to detect amblyopia or its risk factors to improve visual acuity. The American Academy of Family Physicia…
