Effect of Pb-exposure and B vitamin deficiencies on δ-aminolevulinic acid dehydratase activity among workers from Pb recycling plants.

Previous studies reported that Pb exposure causes a negative association with delta-aminolevulinic acid dehydratase activity (δ-ALAD), but the impact of Pb exposure (dose and time), B vitamin deficiencies, and lifestyle factors needs to be explored. In this study, the impact of Pb exposure, B vitamin deficiencies, and lifestyle factors on δ-ALAD activity among workers exposed to Pb from the Pb-recycling process was evaluated. Blood lead levels (BLLs), B vitamins (B6, B9, and B12), hematological factors (Hb% and HCT), lifestyle factors, and δ-ALAD activity was assessed in 170 male Pb-exposed wo

Decreased liver B vitamin-related enzymes as a metabolic hallmark of cancer cachexia.

Cancer cachexia is a complex metabolic disorder accounting for ~20% of cancer-related deaths, yet its metabolic landscape remains unexplored. Here, we report a decrease in B vitamin-related liver enzymes as a hallmark of systemic metabolic changes occurring in cancer cachexia. Metabolomics of multiple mouse models highlights cachexia-associated reductions of niacin, vitamin B6, and a glycine-related subset of one-carbon (C1) metabolites in the liver. Integration of proteomics and metabolomics reveals that liver enzymes related to niacin, vitamin B6, and glycine-related C1 enzymes dependent on

B-group vitamin production by lactic acid bacteria--current knowledge and potential applications.

Although most vitamins are present in a variety of foods, human vitamin deficiencies still occur in many countries, mainly because of malnutrition not only as a result of insufficient food intake but also because of unbalanced diets. Even though most lactic acid bacteria (LAB) are auxotrophic for several vitamins, it is now known that certain strains have the capability to synthesize water-soluble vitamins such as those included in the B-group (folates, riboflavin and vitamin B(12) amongst others). This review article will show the current knowledge of vitamin biosynthesis by LAB and show how

[Nutrition and bone health. Roles of vitamin C and vitamin B as regulators of bone mass and quality].

Vitamin C and a vitamin B are essential nutrients to maintain bone density and bone quality. Recent literature clearly shows that vitamin C and B affect bone quality determinant "collagen cross-link formation" . Mildly elevated plasma homocysteine levels induced by vitamin B insufficiency and methylenetetrahydrofolate reductase (MTHFR) deteriorate normal collagen cross-link formation (Saito M, Osteoporos Int 2009 May 30. [Epub ahead of print] , Shiraki M and Saito M, J Bone Miner Metab [6] 2008) . In this review, we describe the effects of vitamin C and vitamin B insufficiency and hyperhomocys

Role of Vitamin B in Healthy Ageing and Disease.

B vitamin complex consist of vitamins B1, B2, B5, B6, B9, B12 and is pivotal for overall health, influencing vital functions such as, energy metabolism, DNA maintenance, and healthy immune system. Inadequate B vitamin levels are associated with various health issues, including neurocognitive problems, immune imbalances, and inflammation. In ageing individuals, deficiencies in B vitamins increase the risk of cardiovascular ailments, stroke, cognitive disorders, neurodegeneration, mental health issues, and methylation-related disorders. These result primarily due to changes in glycation, mitocho

Suboptimal Vitamin B Intakes of Zambian Preschool Children: Evaluation of 24-Hour Dietary Recalls.

BACKGROUND: Hidden hunger affects individuals who chronically consume an inadequate intake of at least 1 micronutrient and is associated with low dietary diversity. Little data are available on dietary intake or status assessment of B vitamins among preschool children in Zambia. OBJECTIVES: The aim of this study was to assess 24-hour dietary recall records obtained from Zambian children aged 3 to 7 years for B vitamin intake in relation to adequacy and change over time in the same community. METHODS: Twenty-four-hour dietary recalls were collected from 2 studies that were 2 years apart in th

A pernicious leucoencephalopathy.

Pernicious anaemia may manifest various neurological symptoms and signs ranging from the subtle to the dramatic. We describe a young man with cobalamin deficiency presenting with sensorimotor deficits, ataxia, dysarthria, mild cognitive deterioration and altered mood of insidious onset. The MRI brain findings were in keeping with a leucoencephalopathy without evidence of MRI changes in the spinal cord. This constellation of features has been reported rarely. His response to treatment as well as the marked improvement of the leucoencephalopathy on imaging suggests at least partial reversibility

Vitamins, minerals and supplements: part two.

Vitamins and minerals are organic food substances found only in plants and animals and are essential to the normal functioning of the body. Although only required in small amounts, as previously discussed in the past decade there has been an increased use of vitamin, mineral, herbal and nutritional supplements in the general population. While deficiencies in such nutrients can be harmful to health, conflicting claims have been made about the health benefits of such supplementation. In the second of an occasional series on vitamins, minerals, and supplements, JUNE THOMPSON gives an overview of

Burning feet syndrome. A clinical review.

BACKGROUND: Burning pain in the feet has been known to occur as a distinct clinical symptom for almost two centuries. Despite being a common and fascinating clinical entity, this syndrome has received scant attention in the medical literature and has been described only in anecdotal reports. OBJECTIVE: This article describes and discusses the various aspects of this intriguing syndrome. DISCUSSION: Burning feet syndrome (BFS) is a common disorder especially among the elderly and is frequently encountered in general practice. There is no specific aetiology and it can occur as an isolated symp

Vitamins deficiency in developing chick during chromium intoxication and protection thereof.

Deficiency of various vitamins in postnatally developing chick during chromium intoxication and their recovery during vitamins (B and E) and glutathione therapies has been investigated. Study was concentrated on liver, kidney, muscles and serum. Newly hatched chicks were reared in laboratory. They were treated with a daily dose of 10mg/kg/day potassium dichromate from 2nd to 8th day of their age. Thereafter, one group was sacrificed on 9th day. Second group was kept without intoxication for another 7 days and sacrificed on 16th day. Three groups of chromium pretoxicated animals were exposed to

Vitamin D, Folic Acid and Vitamin B12 Can Reverse Vitamin D Deficiency-Induced Learning and Memory Impairment by Altering 27-Hydroxycholesterol and S-Adenosylmethionine.

The cholesterol-oxidized metabolite 27-hydroxycholesterol (27-OHC) is synthesized by CYP27A1, which is a key factor in vitamin D and oxysterol metabolism. Both vitamin D and 27-OHC are considered to play important roles in Alzheimer’s disease (AD). The study aims to research the effects of co-supplementation of vitamin D, folic acid, and vitamin B12 on learning and memory ability in vitamin D-deficient mice, and to explore the underlying mechanism. In this study, C57BL/6J mice were fed a vitamin D-deficient diet for 13 weeks to establish a vitamin D-deficient mice model. The vitamin D-deficien

Vitamin B and Zinc Supplements and Capsaicin Oral Rinse Treatment Options for Burning Mouth Syndrome.

Background and Objectives: Burning mouth syndrome (BMS) is an enigmatic, idiopathic, chronic, often painful clinical entity, where patients experience oral burning without clear clinical changes on the oral mucosa. There are yet to be well established standardized and validated definitions, diagnostic criteria or classifications for burning mouth syndrome. The aim of this study is to determine whether vitamin B complex and zinc supplements or 0.02% topical capsaicin rinse, can help alleviate BMS pain/burning levels. The objectives: (1) Gather data before and after treatment with vitamin B comp…

Metabolomic biomarkers of habitual B vitamin intakes unveil novel differentially methylated positions in the human epigenome.

BACKGROUND: B vitamins such as folate (B9), B6, and B12 are key in one carbon metabolism, which generates methyl donors for DNA methylation. Several studies have linked differential methylation to self-reported intakes of folate and B12, but these estimates can be imprecise, while metabolomic biomarkers can offer an objective assessment of dietary intakes. We explored blood metabolomic biomarkers of folate and vitamins B6 and B12, to carry out epigenome-wide analyses across up to three European cohorts. Associations between self-reported habitual daily B vitamin intakes and 756 metabolites (Me
