[Changes in ocular refraction after tamponade with silicone oil].

In order to study refractive changes caused by a intravitreal silicone oil injection we retrospectively analyzed 25 eyes after vitreoretinal surgery combined with silicone oil tamponade. In all cases the postoperative visual acuity was 0.1 or better. Mean difference in refraction after silicone oil tamponade in phakic eyes was +5.07 Dsph (+2.0 to +8.0 Dsph). Mean refractive change in the aphakic silicone oil filled eyes was - 6.63 Dsph (-4.0 to -9.0 Dsph). Silicone oil extraction induced a greater refractive change (myopic shift, mean -5.57 Dsph) than silicone oil injection. After silicone oil

Anesthesia in retinal surgery: A national survey.

INTRODUCTION: Local-regional anesthesia (LRA) techniques used for vitreoretinal surgery include peribulbar (PBA) and sub-Tenon's anesthesia (STA). Despite their increasing use over general anesthesia, there are no clear recommendations on their indications and contraindications. Furthermore, French practices in this field have not been evaluated. The objectives of this survey were to describe current French anesthesia practices for vitreoretinal surgery and to identify professionals' needs. METHODS: A 23-question questionnaire was sent to French-speaking retinal surgeons via the Club Francoph

[Role of vitreoretinal interface in the pathogenesis and therapy of macular disease associated with optic pits].

PURPOSE: Although the relationship between optic pits and macular lesions was described nearly a century ago, the pathology and pathogenesis of macular detachment remain unclear. Recent OCT studies have shown schisislike spaces in connection with the disc. None of the hypotheses of pathogenesis proposed so far could have been proven. Besides the hypothesis of exudation, the role of the vitreoretinal interface is kept in the background of discussion. We describe a case of macular detachment associated with optic pit that regained full vision after pars plana vitrectomy with laser coagulation an

How much vitrectomy is enough? A narrative review.

The optimal extent of vitreous removal in modern vitreoretinal surgery remains controversial. While extensive vitrectomy has traditionally been performed to minimize traction and reduce postoperative complications, emerging evidence challenges its routine use across all indications. This narrative review critically evaluates whether extensive vitreous removal provides superior outcomes compared to limited, vitreous-sparing approaches. Current data do not demonstrate a consistent or clinically meaningful advantage of extensive vitrectomy. Although broader vitreous removal may reduce residual tr

Silicone oil emulsification: A literature review and role of widefield imaging and ultra-widefield imaging with navigated central and peripheral optical coherence tomography technology.

Silicone oil (SO) emulsification is a significant concern in vitreoretinal surgery, leading to various complications. Despite the high prevalence of SO emulsification within the eye, there is currently no standardized method for its early detection. The recent introduction of widefield (WF) imaging and ultra-WF (UWF) imaging with navigated central and peripheral optical coherence tomography (OCT) techniques have shown promising results in providing high-resolution images of the peripheral vitreous, vitreoretinal interface, retina, and choroid. This enhanced visualization capability enables the

[Retinal detachment after surgery of congenital cataract].

We conducted a retrospective study of retinal detachments after congenital cataract surgery managed during the last twelve years so as to determine whether the surgical prognosis has been improved by the use of vitreoretinal microsurgery. The study included 25 eyes of 23 consecutive patients. The time interval between cataract surgery and the onset of retinal detachment ranged from 1 month to 46 years. It was 10 to more than 30 years in 60% of patients. Fourteen patients (60.8%) were over 26 years old. Nine eyes (36%) showed PVR grade B to D3. Preoperative fundus examination was hindered by an
