Moffett's muted mules: the science of laryngology in the art of war.

BACKGROUND: Mules and other equine species have been used in warfare for thousands of years to transport goods and supplies. Mules are known for 'braying', which is disadvantageous in warfare operations. This article explores the fascinating development of surgical techniques to stop military mules from braying, with particular emphasis on the key role played by the otolaryngologist Arthur James Moffett in devoicing the mules of the second Chindit expedition of World War II. METHOD: The PubMed database (1900-2017) and Google search engine were used to identify articles related to devoicing mu

Developmental Vitamin D Deficiency Produces Behavioral Phenotypes of Relevance to Autism in an Animal Model.

Emerging evidence suggests that gestational or developmental vitamin D (DVD) deficiency is associated with an increased risk of autism spectrum disorder (ASD). ASD is a neurodevelopmental disorder characterized by impairments in social interaction, lack of verbal and non-verbal communications, stereotyped repetitive behaviors and hyper-activities. There are several other clinical features that are commonly comorbid with ASD, including olfactory impairments, anxiety and delays in motor development. Here we investigate these features in an animal model related to ASD-the DVD-deficient rat. Compa

Accidental insulin-induced hypoglycemia in nondiabetic dogs.

Insulin overdose requires a multi-tool diagnostic approach because a single test is not sensitive and specific for diagnosis. Herein, animal cases of insulin-induced hypoglycemia are presented in nondiabetic patients. We report an outbreak of iatrogenic insulin poisoning in dogs. Twenty dogs presented with peracute clinical signs, and seven were submitted for postmortem and histological examination in the Setor de Anatomia Patológica (SAP) at the Federal Rural University of Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. Tremors, inability to stand still, tachypnea, and intense vocalization were evident in 2 to 13 h

Effects of Axial Vibration on Needle Insertion into the Tail Veins of Rats and Subsequent Serial Blood Corticosterone Levels.

Blood collection is commonplace in biomedical research. Obtaining sufficient sample while minimizing animal stress requires significant skill and practice. Repeated needle punctures can cause discomfort and lead to variable release of stress hormones, potentially confounding analysis. We designed a handheld device to reduce the force necessary for needle insertion by using low-frequency, axial (forward and backward) micromotions (that is, vibration) delivered to the needle during venipuncture. Tests with cadaver rat-tail segments (n = 18) confirmed that peak insertion forces were reduced by 73

[Laryngeal microsurgical laterofixation of paralyzed vocal cords using a new suture instrument].

Author reports on clinical experiences of a method--tried earlier on laboratory animals--for treatment of laryngostenosis following bilateral paralysis of the recurrent nerve. In 2 cases, laterofixation of the paralysed vocal cord only was performed with the help of their endo-extralaryngeal needle carrier instrument. In another 19 cases, medial and lateral fibres of the thyroarytenoid muscle were submucosally removed, then the remaining vocal cord laterofixed with through-stitches in the posterior and middle third, with the help of the endo-extralaryngeal needle carrier. The laterofixing thre

Thermography Analysis of Low-Level Laser Therapy Effect on the Swine Larynx.

INTRODUCTION: The vocal folds are intrinsically associated with the thyroarytenoid muscle. During phonation, microlesions and inflammations can occur due to excessive voice use, which can hinder the correct vibration of the mucosa and alter the voice quality. In addition to vocal hygiene and exercises to reduce phonatory effort, resources such as low-level laser therapy (LLLT) are being used in clinical settings. LLLT has been reported to have a biomodulatory action that can reduce pain and edema in the larynx by accelerating the inflammatory process through temperature variation. This study a

The complex, graded vocal repertoire of the social Rüppell's vulture.

The evolutionary origins of complex communication remain contentious, with social, ecological, and environmental factors proposed as selective drivers. The Social Complexity Hypothesis for Communicative Complexity (SCHCC) predicts that the cognitive demands of navigating socially intricate groups favour the evolution of complex communication. Although several studies provide support for the SCHCC, its empirical basis remains limited and inconsistent, as evidence is drawn predominantly from a small number of well-studied taxa (primarily primates), often neglects species' complete vocal repertoi

Morphometric Evaluation of the Recurrent Laryngeal Nerve of Wistar Rats Exposed to Pesticides.

The literature has been shown that exposition by inhalation to chemical compounds can cause vocal disorders and dysphagia in humans, in addition to other symptoms that are manifested according to the type, concentration and duration of exposure to the substance. Cypermethrin and dichlorvos are pesticides widely used in agriculture, public health, veterinary, and home environments. Despite the scientific evidence that cypermethrin and dichlorvos can cause neurodegenerative damage and motor alterations, there are no studies evaluating the toxic effects of these pesticides on the morphology of st

[Direct electric stimulation of the denervated posterior cricoarytenoid muscle triggered by subglottic temperature in the cat. Preliminary to a laryngeal pacemaker].

Using a temperature sensor to detect inspiratory fresh air flow in the subglottis, we triggered direct electrical stimulation of unilaterally denervated posterior cricoarytenoid muscle (PCA) in cats. Respiratory air flow temperature variations were recorded in awake animals and stimulation of the PCA resulting in vocal cord abduction was obtained several weeks after surgery. Difficulties related to chronic implantation and stimulation are discussed. Their solutions are required before laryngeal pacemaker is used.

Vocal communication: The enigmatic production of low-frequency purrs in cats.

Cat purring, the unusual, pulsed vibration that epitomizes comfort, enjoys a special status in the world of vocal communication research. Indeed, it has long been flagged as a rare exception to the dominant theory of voice production in mammals. A new study presents histological and biomechanical evidence that purring can occur passively, without needing muscle vibration in the larynx controlled by an independent neural oscillator.

Savannah roars: The vocal anatomy and the impressive rutting calls of male impala (Aepyceros melampus) - highlighting the acoustic correlates of a mobile larynx.

A retractable larynx and adaptations of the vocal folds in the males of several polygynous ruminants serve for the production of rutting calls that acoustically announce larger than actual body size to both rival males and potential female mates. Here, such features of the vocal tract and of the sound source are documented in another species. We investigated the vocal anatomy and laryngeal mobility including its acoustical effects during the rutting vocal display of free-ranging male impala (Aepyceros melampus melampus) in Namibia. Male impala produced bouts of rutting calls (consisting of ora

Avian models for brain mechanisms underlying altered social behavior in autism.

The current review is an update on experimental approaches in which birds serve as model species for the investigation of typical failure symptoms associated with autism spectrum disorder (ASD). The discussion is focused on deficiencies of social behavior, from social interactions of domestic chicks, based on visual and auditory cues, to vocal communication in songbirds. Two groups of pathogenetic/risk factors are discussed: 1) non-genetic (environmental/epigenetic) factors, exemplified by embryonic exposure to valproic acid (VPA), and 2) genetic factors, represented by a list of candidate gen

Cannabis Inhalation and Voice Disorders: A Systematic Review.

IMPORTANCE: Widespread legalization of cannabis throughout the United States has created a knowledge gap that leaves practitioners who manage voice disorders uninformed about this substance, commonly referred to as marijuana. The association of cannabis inhalation and voice disorders is rarely reported. However, studies on the association between cannabis inhalation and respiration have been published; therefore, these studies may serve as a surrogate for studies on the association between cannabis and phonation. OBJECTIVE: To review the literature on the association of cannabis-only consumpt

Recurrent laryngeal nerve transection in mice results in translational upper airway dysfunction.

The recurrent laryngeal nerve (RLN) is responsible for normal vocal-fold (VF) movement, and is at risk for iatrogenic injury during anterior neck surgical procedures in human patients. Injury, resulting in VF paralysis, may contribute to subsequent swallowing, voice, and respiratory dysfunction. Unfortunately, treatment for RLN injury does little to restore physiologic function of the VFs. Thus, we sought to create a mouse model with translational functional outcomes to further investigate RLN regeneration and potential therapeutic interventions. To do so, we performed ventral neck surgery in

[Relations between symptoms, durations and triggers of attacks and concurrent diseases in paradoxical vocal fold movement disorder].

OBJECTIVES: To discover the relation between initial symptoms, triggers and durations of attacks of paradoxical vocal fold movement disorder (PVFMD) and concurrent laryngeal and respiratory diseases. PATIENTS AND METHODS: Twenty one PVFMD patients (17 females, 4 males; mean age 50 year; range 31 to 72 years) were included in the study. Diagnosis of PVFMD was established when inspiratory and/or expiratory vocal cord adduction was seen during laryngostroboscopy. RESULTS: Laryngeal and respiratory diseases accompanying PVFMD were laryngopharyngeal reflux (n=15; 71%), asthma (n=11; 52%), allergi

Glottal closure in the hemiparalyzed canine larynx.

Although compensation of voice with unilateral recurrent laryngeal nerve paralysis is commonly held to be the result of the unaffected vocal fold crossing past midline, or overcrossing, this mechanism of compensation has rarely been documented accurately. Beagle dogs were used to create a model of another proposed mechanism of compensation, known as midline drift. Six animals underwent sectioning of the left recurrent laryngeal nerve. One week later, three of the dogs underwent removal of the left posterior and lateral cricoarytenoid muscles. The effects of these procedures were studied by sub

Transmuscular vocal fold injury reduces frequency complexity of rat ultrasonic vocalizations.

Rapid and precise activation of the laryngeal musculature, particularly the thyroarytenoid (TA), is required for the production of rat ultrasonic vocalizations (USVs). Although the role of the TA in USV production has been established through denervation and excised larynx studies, how TA muscle dysfunction affects USV acoustics remains unknown. This study examined how iatrogenic, transmuscular vocal fold injury influences USV production by comparing acoustic parameters between rats receiving bilateral transmuscular vocal fold injury (including the TA muscle) versus sham surgery. Twenty adult

Domestic cat larynges can produce purring frequencies without neural input.

Most mammals produce vocal sounds according to the myoelastic-aerodynamic (MEAD) principle, through self-sustaining oscillation of laryngeal tissues.1,2 In contrast, cats have long been believed to produce their low-frequency purr vocalizations through a radically different mechanism involving active muscle contractions (AMC), where neurally driven electromyographic burst patterns (typically at 20-30 Hz) cause the intrinsic laryngeal muscles to actively modulate the respiratory airflow. Direct empirical evidence for this AMC mechanism is sparse.3 Here, the fundamental frequency (fo) ranges of

Unilateral vocal nerve resection alters neurogenesis in the avian song system in a region-specific manner.

New neurons born in the adult brain undergo a critical period soon after migration to their site of incorporation. During this time, the behavior of the animal may influence the survival or culling of these cells. In the songbird song system, earlier work suggested that adult-born neurons may be retained in the song motor pathway nucleus HVC with respect to motor progression toward a target song during juvenile song learning, seasonal song restructuring, and experimentally manipulated song variability. However, it is not known whether the quality of song per se, without progressive improvement
