Associations Between Environmental and Social Hazards, Self-Esteem, and Condom Use Self-Efficacy Among Northern and Indigenous Adolescents in Arctic Canada: Cross-Sectional Structural Equation Modeling Findings.

BackgroundWildfire exposure and co-occurring socio-environmental inequities may shape HIV and sexually transmitted infection (STI) vulnerabilities, yet this remains understudied in Canada's Northwest Territories (NWT). Guided by ecosocial theory, we examined associations between socio-environmental stressors and condom use self-efficacy (CUSE) among Northern and Indigenous adolescents.MethodsWe conducted a cross-sectional survey (2023-2024) with 290 adolescents (ages 13-18) across 12 NWT communities. Structural equation modeling examined associations among wildfire traumatic exposure severity,

Collective Trauma and Mental Health in Adolescents: A Retrospective Cohort Study of the Effects of Retraumatization.

In the wake of the massive Canadian wildfire of May 2016 in the area of Fort McMurray Alberta, we observed increased rates of mental health problems, particularly post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), in school-aged adolescents (ages 11-19). Surprisingly, we did not see these rates decline over the 3.5-year follow-up period. Additionally, our research suggested that the impact of this mass incident resulted in other unanticipated effects, including the finding that children who were not present for and relatively unaffected by the wildfire showed a similar PTSD symptom profile to children mor

Temporal Trends in Fetal Congenital Heart Disease: Is There a Potential Link With Air Quality?

BACKGROUND: Congenital heart disease (CHD) is the most common birth defect. Environmental risk factors, including air pollution, are increasingly identified as contributors to the risk profile of CHD. We sought to investigate the temporal association between frequency and severity of fetal CHD with air quality in the D.C. metropolitan region. METHODS: We queried all fetal diagnoses of CHD at a tertiary care center over a 5-year period, inclusive of a wildfire smoke event. We categorized each case as critical or non-critical CHD and assigned the case to the estimated month of delivery. We used

Can rain suppress smoldering peat fire?

Smoldering wildfire in peatlands contributes significantly to global carbon emissions and regional haze events. Smoldering fire in peatlands is one of the largest and most persistent fire phenomena on Earth. Here we assess the underlying mechanism of rain in suppressing the smoldering peat fire in the shallow soil layer up to 15 cm deep through laboratory experiments. We show that the minimum rainfall intensity to extinguish the peat fire is roughly 4 mm/h, so that the persistent light rain cannot suppress such smoldering wildfire. The required rain duration, ∆t (min), for extinguishing smolde

Pulsed volcanic sulfur emissions linked to the end-Triassic terrestrial crisis.

The end-Triassic mass extinction (ETE) was triggered by Central Atlantic Magmatic Province (CAMP) volcanism, which released voluminous carbo … r deposition coincided with floral diversity loss and fern spikes, and intensified high-temperature wildfires over an interval of ~60,000 years. We propose that the pulse of maximum CAMP eruptions rapidly increased volcanic-S influxes (acid rain) to terrestrial basins, leading to catastrophic plant dieback during the ETE. The consequent creation of moisture …

An integrative framework for early estimation of global crop yields demonstrated under large-scale disruptions.

Expectations of global crop yields, especially in major production countries, strongly influence crop-export policies and global food securi … uction countries. We selected three cases, the coronavirus disease 2019 global pandemic, Australian wildfires and the Ukraine war, to verify the model performance under different regional and global disruptions. The framework achieved a satisfactory accuracy globally, especially in major crop-production countries with developed agricultural techniques. When …

Assessing the influence of building data choice on wildland-urban interface delineation in mainland Portugal.

The delineation of the Wildland-Urban Interface (WUI) is fundamental for wildfire risk management, yet it is highly sensitive to the underlying building data used. Global building datasets offer unprecedented coverage but may introduce biases by including different types of built-up structures, potentially leading to an overestimation of exposure and a misallocation of critical resources. This study aims to map the WUI and assess wildfire exposure in mainland Portugal by comparing the efficacy of different building datasets: the official residential database (BGE21), Microsoft Building Footpri

Evaluating investments in electricity resilience: evidence from California's Public Safety Power Shutoff (PSPS) events.

Cascading failures and compound effects in electricity systems are a growing concern for infrastructure resilience, as they increasingly lead to additional hazards (e.g., wildfires), further exacerbating power disruptions. In California, investor-owned utilities (IOUs) have responded to these threats by enacting Public Safety Power Shutoffs (PSPS), which are proactive de-energization of high-risk circuits, to reduce wildfire risk. Although prior research has examined PSPS impacts, little is known about whether physical infrastructure investments have reduced de-energizations on the most freque…

Weathering the Storm: Climate-Related Weather Event Experiences of Families of Children With Medical Complexity.

BACKGROUND: Climate change is increasingly an urgent concern because of the catastrophic and irreversible impacts on the planet and society as a whole. In recent years, there have also been more frequent and extreme weather events such as heatwaves, droughts, floods and wildfires across the globe. Although families of children with medical complexity may be particularly vulnerable to the impacts of extreme weather events, few studies exist that address this topic. METHODS: Drawing upon a subset of data from two qualitative studies, we explored the experiences of families during climate-relate…

The Role of Social Determinants in Mental Health and Resilience After Disasters: Implications for Public Health Policy and Practice.

In this general literature review, we will explore the impacts and contribution of social determinants to mental health and resiliency following both natural and man-made disasters. Natural disasters, such as wildfires, earthquakes, tsunamis, and hurricanes, as well as man-made disasters, such as civil wars, have been known to inflict significant damage to the mental health of the victims. In this paper, we mainly explore some most studied vulnerability and protective social determinant factors such as gender, age, ethnicity, socials support and socioeconomic status for the mental health and r…

War drives forest fire risks and highlights the need for more ecologically-sound forest management in post-war Ukraine.

Since 24 February 2022, Ukraine has experienced full-scale military aggression initiated by the Russian Federation. The war has had a major negative impact on vegetation cover of war-affected regions. We explored interactions between pre-war forest management and the impacts of military activities in three of the most forested Ukrainian areas of interest (AOI), affected by the war. These were forests lying between Kharkiv and Luhansk cities (AOI 'East'), forests along the Dnipro River delta (AOI 'Kherson'), and those of the Chornobyl Exclusion Zone (AOI CEZ). We used Sentinel satellite imagery

Risk of venous thromboembolism associated with short-term exposure to fine particulate matter (PM2.5) and ozone air pollution.

BACKGROUND: While established associations between air pollution and adverse cardiovascular outcomes are known, it remains uncertain whether short-term exposure to air pollution is a risk factor for venous thromboembolism (VTE). The risk of VTE associated with pollution seasonality (summer wildfire season vs winter inversion season) is not understood. OBJECTIVES: The aim of this study was to assess for an association between short-term exposure to air pollution and VTE. METHODS: We queried the electronic data warehouse of an integrated healthcare system for VTE occurrence from January 1, 200

Monitoring polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons deposition in eastern Canada using moss biomonitoring: A large-scale study of spatial patterns and environmental influences.

Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) are persistent organic pollutants released into the atmosphere from both natural and anthropogenic s … northern regions to capture background deposition levels. Despite the influence of intense regional wildfires and transboundary air masses, PAH concentrations across most of Quebec remained low, highlighting the province relatively clean atmospheric conditions. Elevated PAH levels were largely confined to the St. Lawrence Urban Corridor and corresponded wit …

Deep learning-based forest fire detection using an improved SSD algorithm with CBAM.

Fires are characterized by their sudden onset, rapid spread, and destructive nature, often causing irreversible damage to ecosystems. To address the challenges in forest fire detection, including the varying scales and complex features of flame and smoke, as well as false positives and missed detections caused by environmental interference, we propose a novel object detection model named CBAM-SSD. Firstly, data augmentation techniques involving geometric and color transformations are employed to enrich the dataset, effectively mitigating issues of insufficient and incomplete data collected in

Soil Organic Matter Molecular Composition Shifts Driven by Forest Regrowth or Pasture after Slash-and-Burn of Amazon Forest.

Slash-and-burn of Amazon Forest (AF) for pasture establishment has increased the occurrence of AF wildfires. Recent studies emphasize soil organic matter (SOM) molecular composition as a principal driver of post-fire forest regrowth and restoration of AF anti-wildfire ambience. Nevertheless, SOM chemical shifts caused by AF fires and post-fire vegetation are rarely investigated at a molecular level. We employed pyrolysis-gas chromatography-mass spectrometry to reveal molecular changes in SOM (0-10, 40-50 cm depth) of a slash-burn-and-20-month-regrowth AF (BAF) and a 23-year Brachiaria pasture …

Lessons learned from the California fire season: Behind the lens.

Wildfires in California have been progressively increasing in duration, intensity and frequency. In response, a number of best practices have been developed for mitigating and responding to fires within the state. This paper describes the lessons learned within core capabilities and describes current practices. Reflections are offered as a consideration and should not be interpreted as standards of practice.

Assessment of fire resilience in subtropical wetlands using high spatial resolution images.

Resilience is the ability of a system to absorb disturbances, rearrange itself, and adapt in order to maintain its functionality, structure, identity, and feedback. Research involving fire resilience in subtropical wetlands (SW) allows us to understand the dynamics of these ecosystems, measure impacts on fauna and flora, and promote policies for the management and protection. The aim of the present study is to assess the fire resilience of SW. The study was divided into three steps: (i) burned area classification, (ii) vegetation pattern classification, and (iii) temporal analysis of SW fire r

Observed Changes in the Frequency, Intensity, and Spatial Patterns of Nine Natural Hazards in the United States from 2000 to 2019.

There is increasing evidence from across the globe that climate change results in changes in the frequency, location, and impact of natural hazards. Much of this evidence is conceptual, inferential, or simply assumed. To provide objective support to confirm these hypotheses, we constructed county-level time-series datasets (2000-2019) for nine natural hazards for the entire United States. Hazards considered for this study included hurricanes, tropical storms, landslides, wildfires, earthquakes, drought, inland flooding, coastal flooding, and tornadoes. Geospatial analysis techniques were used …

Implications of canyon fire behavior under different fuel conditions for fire risk assessment.

Canyon fire spread often involves sudden acceleration associated with eruptive fire. However, the critical condition of eruptive fire, and the effectiveness of forest management in reducing fire risks in such complex terrains, remain unclear. This study conducted systematic canyon fire experiments using two fuel types and different fuel loads to investigate their influence on canyon fire behavior and eruptive fire, and to discuss their implications for fire risk assessment. The results indicate that fuel conditions influence fire behavior due to varying physicochemical properties and fuel bed
