Contrasting greenhouse gas flux responses to ecological restoration: comparative insights from two shallow lakes.

Macrophyte-based lake restoration has effectively shifted lakes from turbid, phytoplankton-dominated conditions to a clearer state. Few studies have explored the impact of such restoration on greenhouse gas emissions in lakes. Through a year-long field study, we compared CO2 and CH4 diffusive fluxes between phytoplankton-dominated and macrophyte-restored regions in two shallow lakes. Annual mean CO2 fluxes were lower in restored than in unrestored regions (-3.603 ± 16.113 vs -0.934 ± 15.442 mol m-2 yr-1 in Lake Li; 0.952 ± 7.922 vs 3.630 ± 9.105 mol m-2 yr-1 in Lake Xuanwu). Nutrients, pH, and

Toxicity and Risk Assessment of Zinc and Aluminum Mixtures to Ceriodaphnia silvestrii (Crustacea: Cladocera).

Despite the co-occurrence of metals in aquatic environments, their joint effects are generally not considered during risk assessments. Data on the combined effects of zinc (Zn) and aluminum (Al) on aquatic animals are extremely scarce in the literature, although these metals are commonly used in domestic and industrial activities. In the present study, we investigated the effects of mixtures of Zn and Al on the cladoceran Ceriodaphnia silvestrii. We evaluated immobility (at 48 h) and ingestion rates (at 24 h). We also performed chronic toxicity tests for single metals. The environmental risks

The interactive effects of stratospheric ozone depletion, UV radiation, and climate change on aquatic ecosystems.

This assessment summarises the current state of knowledge on the interactive effects of ozone depletion and climate change on aquatic ecosystems, focusing on how these affect exposures to UV radiation in both inland and oceanic waters. The ways in which stratospheric ozone depletion is directly altering climate in the southern hemisphere and the consequent extensive effects on aquatic ecosystems are also addressed. The primary objective is to synthesise novel findings over the past four years in the context of the existing understanding of ecosystem response to UV radiation and the interactive

Cryopreservation of Aurelia aurita larvae, a new model for understanding cryobiology in high-water content marine species.

Cryopreservation of marine species is a key tool for biodiversity conservation, population management, and the advance of aquaculture and biological research. Currently exist significant progress in the cryopreservation of gametes, embryos, larvae and even juveniles of several genus of marine invertebrates. However, cnidarians, and particularly jellyfish, remain largely underexplored. In this study, we report on the first successful cryopreservation of Aurelia aurita ephyrae, the first larval stage of this jellyfish species. This species is characterized by extremely high-water content (96.3 %

Overall impacts of bisphenol S (BPS) on the three-spined stickleback (Gasterosteus aculeatus) in a mesocosm experiment: Relationships between biomarkers, life-history traits, and population-level effects.

Effects of Bisphenol S (BPS), a widespread substitute for Bisphenol A, were investigated on the three-spined stickleback (Gasterosteus aculeatus) across multiple biological levels and timescales in mesocosms (semi-natural rivers). By comparing short- and long-term exposures, the aim is to identify early predictive biomarkers and establish mechanistic links between sub-organismal and population-level effects of the BPS. This study thereby contributes to the integration of these results into Adverse Outcome Pathway (AOP) and supports Environmental Risk Assessment (ERA). Two complementary approac

The effect of Mauritanian and Benguela upwelling waters on micronekton (Decapoda, Euphausiacea, and Lophogastrida) in the Southeastern Atlantic Ocean.

Eastern Boundary Upwelling Systems play a crucial role in marine productivity, supporting rich biodiversity and sustaining significant global fisheries. These dynamic regions are characterized by nutrient-rich waters that fuel complex food webs, making them vital for ecosystem functioning and fisheries management. Understanding the composition and distribution of key zooplankton groups, such as pelagic crustaceans, is essential for assessing ecosystem dynamics, particularly in the context of climate variability. In this study, we describe the community composition of pelagic crustaceans in the

Diet composition and trophic ecology of two Antarctic storm-petrel species.

Availability and quality of food shape the distribution and movements of animal populations. In sympatric species, sharing limited resources, coexistence is typically achieved through niche segregation. However, information on dietary niches is lacking particularly for small and elusive seabirds, which often forage in remote oceanic areas. In this study, we aimed to characterize the trophic ecology of two highly pelagic seabird species, Wilson's storm-petrel Oceanites oceanicus and Black-bellied storm-petrel Fregetta tropica, breeding sympatrically on King George Island, maritime Antarctica, u

An integrated approach for the assessment of the electrochemical oxidation of diclofenac: By-product identification, microbiological and eco-genotoxicological evaluation.

Diclofenac (DCF), a contaminant of emerging concern, is a non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug widely detected in water bodies, which demonstrated harmful acute and chronic toxicity toward algae, zooplankton and aquatic invertebrates, therefore its removal from impacted water is necessary. DCF is recalcitrant toward traditional treatment technologies, thus, innovative approaches are required. Among them, electrochemical oxidation (EO) has shown promising results. In this research, an innovative multidisciplinary approach is proposed to assess the electrochemical oxidation (EO) of diclofenac fr

Evaluation of ecosystem health and potential human health hazards in the Hangzhou Bay and Qiantang Estuary region through multiple assessment approaches.

Anthropogenic pollution has become a major issue governing ecosystem and human health risks. The Hangzhou Bay and Qiantang Estuary region are facing unusual perturbation due to rapid development along the embayment in recent decades. This study evaluated the organic and inorganic pollutants in water, sediment, and from the muscles of higher trophic organisms (fish, crustacean, shellfish) during four different seasons (in 2018-2019) along the Qiantang Estuary and Hangzhou Bay region to assess the ecosystem health and potential hazard status. Dissolved inorganic phosphate and nitrogen were the m

Species-Specific Quorum Sensing Represses the Chitobiose Utilization Locus in Vibrio cholerae.

The marine facultative pathogen Vibrio cholerae forms complex multicellular communities on the chitinous shells of crustacean zooplankton in its aquatic reservoir. V. cholerae-chitin interactions are critical for the growth, evolution, and waterborne transmission of cholera. This is due, in part, to chitin-induced changes in gene expression in this pathogen. Here, we sought to identify factors that influence chitin-induced expression of one locus, the chitobiose utilization operon (chb), which is required for the uptake and catabolism of the chitin disaccharide. Through a series of genetic scr

Environmental reservoirs of Vibrio cholerae.

The environmental reservoir of Vibrio cholerae, the causative agent of cholera, has been a topic of scientific investigation ever since the discovery of the bacterium itself. While the bacteria can be isolated from both clinical and environmental sources during epidemics, it evades isolation by conventional culture techniques during the period between successive epidemics. The problem is identifying the location and mode of survival and multiplication of V. cholerae during this inter-epidemic period. This information is crucial not only for epidemiological reasons, but also because the seasona

Nature-based solution-inspired electroactive ecological floating bed: a technology for carbon-nitrogen removal and ecological performance assessment in aquaculture Tailwater.

The remediation of polluted aquaculture water and sediment, which severely threatens aquatic ecosystems, is of paramount importance. In this study, a Nature-based Solution (NbS) of electroactive ecological floating bed coupled with an oxygen-producing submerged plants system (EEFB-PS) was designed, where a conductive floating-bed matrix functioned as an integrated biocathode embedded within the rhizosphere and was coupled to the anode in the sediment. Under a 12 h light/dark condition, submerged plants induced diel DO oscillations that enabled nitrification in the daytime and electroautotrophi

Marine Photovoltaic Industry Development: A Review of its Impact on Aquatic Environmental Elements and Future Perspectives.

With renewables, marine photovoltaic (PV) harnessing solar energy gains momentum, promising vast ocean space for power generation with significant benefits.Recent studies indicate that while marine PV systems are designed to address environmental challenges, they can also cause unintended ecological consequences. Mitigating potential negative impacts on aquatic environments has therefore become a critical research priority. This study focuses on three key aspects of these environments: trace elements, water temperature, and aquatic organisms. It provides a critical review of the literature bas

Larvicidal potential of Pseudomonas mosselii isolated from Aedes (Diptera: Culicidae) egg surfaces against dengue vector mosquitoes and its impact on non-target organisms.

The critical impact of mosquito-borne diseases on public health, along with the failure of current control strategies, highlights the need for novel mosquito control approaches mainly in tropical countries. This study explored the larvicidal properties of bacterial isolates from the egg surfaces of Aedes aegypti L. and Aedes albopictus Skuse (Diptera: Culicidae), the primary and secondary dengue vector mosquitoes in Sri Lanka. Among 30 bacterial isolates, a local strain of Pseudomonas mosselii Quesnel isolated from the egg surfaces of the dengue vectors demonstrated strong larvicidal activity

Beyond targeted PFAS: contamination patterns and trophic dynamics in an estuarine food web.

Over the past decade, emerging per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) have been increasingly reported in aquatic environments. Still, the environmental behavior of numerous emerging PFAS remains poorly understood. This study investigated trophic dynamics and contamination patterns of both legacy and emerging PFAS revealed by HRMS, in the food web of common sole (benthic) and European sea bass (demersal). Overall, 14 estuarine species collected in the Seine Estuary (France) were studied, including zooplankton, polychaetes, shellfish, crustaceans and fish. Through suspect screening, 92 PFAS

Differentiated fatty acid allocation of Daphnia magna helped to maintain their population under food quality deterioration.

Polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFAs) are vital to the physiological functioning of crustacean zooplankton. However, cyanobacteria blooms frequently lead to PUFA deficiencies, which poses a substantial challenge to population fitness. Therefore, we hypothesize that D. magna adapt to PUFA-deficient conditions by prioritizing PUFA allocation to somatic growth, and then to offspring during reproduction to ensure population persistence. To test this hypothesis, we applied (compound-specific) 13C labeling to compare the turnover of total carbon and certain groups of fatty acids in Daphnia magna fed w

Mercury isotopic evidence for the importance of particles as a source of mercury to marine organisms.

The origin of methylmercury in pelagic fish remains unclear, with many unanswered questions regarding the production and degradation of this neurotoxin in the water column. We used mercury (Hg) stable isotope ratios of marine particles and biota to elucidate the cycling of methylmercury prior to incorporation into the marine food web. The Hg isotopic composition of particles, zooplankton, and fish reveals preferential methylation of Hg within small (< 53 µm) marine particles in the upper 400 m of the North Pacific Ocean. Mass-dependent Hg isotope ratios (δ202Hg) recorded in small particles ove

Daphnid morphology deters fish predators.

Spine and helmet production in zooplankton are thought to provide protection from invertebrate rather than vertebrate predators. We examined selectivity for Daphnia lumholtzi, a species that exhibits extreme cyclomorphosis with a large helmet and long tail spine (total length can exceed 5 mm), by juvenile bluegill (15-80 mm) in the laboratory and field. Bluegill consumed more D. pulex than D. lumholtzi when the species were presented alone. When the daphnids were offered together in equal numbers, bluegill selected against D. lumholtzi. Bluegill foraging behavior helped explain the observed no

Sublethal dietary effects of microcystin producing Microcystis on threadfin shad, Dorosoma petenense.

The presence of the toxic cyanobacterium Microcystis in the upper San Francisco Estuary (SFE) since 1999 is a potential but unquantified threat to the health and survival of aquatic organisms such as fish and zooplankton. The microcystins (MCs) predominantly in the LR-form (MC-LR) produced by Microcystis is hepatotoxic and a potential threat to the fishery. Concurrently, in the SFE significant declines in pelagic fish, known as the Pelagic Organism Decline (POD), has been recognized by state and federal agencies since 2000. In 2005, the presence of the toxic algal bloom, Microcystis has been h

Effects of UV radiation on aquatic ecosystems and interactions with climate change.

The health of freshwater and marine ecosystems is critical to life on Earth. The impact of solar UV-B radiation is one potential stress factor that can have a negative impact on the health of certain species within these ecosystems. Although there is a paucity of data and information regarding the effect of UV-B radiation on total ecosystem structure and function, several recent studies have addressed the effects on various species within each trophic level. Climate change, acid deposition, and changes in other anthropogenic stressors such as pollutants alter UV exposure levels in inland and c
