Because some symptoms of Rett's syndrome are suggestive of excessive endogenous opioid activity, we measured the levels of beta-endorphin-like immunoreactivity in lumbar CSF from 158 affected female patients and from 13 female controls. The mean (+/- SE) control level of beta-endorphin immunoreactivity in CSF was 35.3 +/- 2.8 pg/ml (range, 23 to 48 pg/ml), whereas those with Rett's syndrome had a mean level of 95.3 +/- 3.6 pg/ml (range, 31 to 293 pg/ml). The levels of beta-endorphin immunoreactivity in initial CSF samples exceeded the control range in 90% of the patients with Rett's syndrome.

Thirteen cycles of anovulation menstruation in 11 cases were treated with Electro-Acupuncture (EA) ovulation induction. In 6 of these cycles which showed ovulation, the hand skin temperature (HST) of these patients was increased after EA treatment. In the other 7 cycles ovulation was not induced. There were no regular changes in HST of 5 normal subjects. Cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) beta-endorphin concentrations were determined before and after treatment in 28 patients suffering chronic neuralgic low back pain/sciatica. Pancreatic tissue from 3 cases of hyperinsulinemic hypoglycemia was examined using histochemical and immunoperoxidase staining techniques. The insular lesions present were adenomatosis and insulin-producing islet-cell adenomata. The great majority of the islet parenchymal cells in these lesions were reactive with antibodies to pro-insulin, C-peptide, and insulin. A variable number of islet cells was found to react with beta-endorphin antiserum in all 3 cases, while the reaction with antiserum against the neural tissue marker antigen, S-100, was restricted to the cases with islet-cell adenoma.
