Amoebiasis: a 10 year retrospective study at the University Hospital, Kuala Lumpur.

A hospital based retrospective study of amoebiasis was carried out for a ten-year period at the University Hospital, Kuala Lumpur. Of the 51 cases traced, 30 (59%) had amoebic dysentery, 20 (39%) were amoebic liver abscess (ALA) and one patient had both conditions. Entameoba histolytica trophozoites were identified in 13 (43%) of the amoebic dysenteric stools and 9 (30%) from biopsy. Of the 20 (39%) ALA cases, only one showed parasites in the stool and biopsy. Majority of the patients with dysentery were Malays while Chinese comprised 40% with ALA. Males predominated overall with a male female

[Central nervous system infection by free-living amebas: report of 3 Venezuelan cases].

INTRODUCTION: Infection of the Central Nervous System by free living amebas is an unusual event, 344 cases have been reported to date. The disease becomes evident in two different clinical fashions: Primary Amebic Meningoencephalitis (PAM) caused by Naegleria fowleri and Granulomatous Amebic Encephalitis (GAE) induced by Spp. of Acanthamoeba and Balamuthia. CLINICAL CASES: The authors report three new cases from Venezuela. Case 1. 34 years old man, with a chief complaint of general malaise, headache and fever, a diagnosis of common cold was made and the patient was treated as such, he did not

Unusual infections in humans.

Nine cases of unusual infections in humans are presented. In each case, we present the clinical history, histopathologic changes (if indicated), morphologic features of the causative organism, diagnosis, discussion, differential diagnosis, therapy, and current literature. All of the cases are illustrated with pertinent photographs. The nine cases are as follows: (i) acanthocephaliasis, the first acquired human infection by Moniliformis moniliformis in the United States; (ii) dipylidiasis, an uncommon infection caused by the dog tapeworm, Dipylidium caninum; (iii) granulomatous amebic encephali

Incidence of the acquired immunodeficiency syndrome in San Francisco, 1980-1983.

Incidence data for the acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS) are presented on the basis of a surveillance file maintained by the San Francisco Bureau of Communicable Disease Control. The incidence of AIDS among residents of San Francisco rose steadily from the first case diagnosed in the last quarter of 1980 through the last quarter of 1983. New cases were diagnosed at a rate of 25 per month in the last quarter of 1983. Reported incidence declined in mid-1983, but the decline was probably a case-finding artifact. Smoothed incidence rates show a steady progressive rise, which is approximate

Immunodiagnosis of amoebiasis.

Serological studies were done on 127 cases using three different techniques namely indirect haemagglutination (IHA), indirect fluorescent antibody test (IFT) and counter immunoelectrophoresis (CIEP) to detect antiamoebic antibodies. All amoebic liver abscess cases showed significant titre of antibodies by all the three tests used. In the group of patients suffering from amoebic pathology of liver, 90.47 per cent were positive by IHA, 100 per cent by IFT and 85.71 per cent by CIEP respectively. Among amoebic dysentry and amoebic colitis cases 81.81 per cent and 80.64 per cent respectively were

[Diagnostic significance of identification of anti-entamoeba histolytica antibodies (author's transl)].

Examinations were performed with the indirect immunofluorescence test (IFAT) and the indirect haemagglutination test (IHAT). Negative titers (less than 1:5) do not exclude an infection with E. histolytica. Titers up to 1:80 in both reactions are found in patients with negative stool specimens or indicate an asymptomatic infection of the intestinal lumen, an incipient or past symptomatic amoebiasis. IFAT values of 1:160 together with a negative or positive IHAT are also suggestive of the two last-mentioned types of infection. These titers are also found in patients with gastrointestinal disorde

Electron microscope studies of experimental Entamoeba histolytica infection in the guinea pig. II. Early cellular and vascular changes accompanying invasion of the lamina propria.

Early cellular and vascular changes in response to invasion of lamina propria by Entamoeba histolytica were studied sequentially, at the ultrastructural level, in germfree guinea pigs inoculated intracecally with amebae and enteric flora derived from patients with acute amebic colitis. Approximately one week post-inoculation the animals developed acute colitis with mucosal invasion by trophic amebae. Although epithelial cells at the sites of amebic invasion showed progressive cytoplasmic changes and desquamation resulting in microerosions, most mesenchymal elements in the lamina propria appear
