Susceptible pregnant sheep were infected with Chlamydia psittaci at different stages of early and mid-gestation. Placentas and foetuses were examined by microbiological, serological, histopathological and immunochemical methods at various intervals thereafter. Antibodies to Rickettsia rickettsii erythrocyte-sensitizing substance (ESS) were raised in rabbits by using a derivatized ESS. The resulting antibodies reacted with R. rickettsii and cross-reacted with Rickettsia conorii, a member of the spotted fever group rickettsiae, but did not react with Rickettsia typhi, a member of the typhus group rickettsiae, Legionella bozemanii, or Proteus vulgaris OX19 or OX2. In one locality in Italy where the incidence of psittacosis has increased rapidly since 1980, a hospital-based study and a seroepidemiological survey were carried out in order to define the clinical and epidemiological features of psittacosis in that area. Registers of the Virology Unit of the University of Ancona, Italy, were reviewed and all hospitalized patients with a serological diagnosis of psittacosis were identified. Cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) and serum samples of 10 patients with neurocysticercosis under treatment by praziquantel were studied in four occasions: before treatment (day 0) and during treatment on three occasions (days 1, 7 and 21). 418 workers were surveyed at a meat-packing plant. The presence of complement-fixing antibodies to the causative agent of enzootic abortion of sheep (EAS) was detected in 59 workers (14.27%), brucellosis in 32 workers (7.64%) and Q fever in 5 workers (1.18%). Immunoglobulins were isolated by affinity chromatography from sera of two patients with melanoma, one with sarcoma, and one with carcinoma.
