BTI 2286E is a 1,2,4-oxadiazole with amoebicidal activity. Three groups of golden hamsters received single doses of BTI 2286E or its sulphone metabolite BTI 2571E as either BTI 2286E 60 mg/kg po or BTI 2571E 60 mg/kg po or BTI 2571E 60 mg/kg ip. Blood samples were collected up to 8 h post-dose and plasma concentrations of BTI 2286E and BTI 2571E were assayed by HPLC. BTI 2286E was rapidly absorbed, extensively metabolized during first pass and rapidly eliminated with a plasma elimination half-life of 1.32 h. Conversion to BTI 2571E was the major pathway of elimination. BTI 2571E had approximat

The age-specific sero-prevalence of amoebiasis and giardiasis was estimated in 91 pediatric diarrhoea and in 70 non-diarrhoeal cases from Southern India. Anti-amoeba/giardia IgG assays on 20 children with inflammatory bowel disease from the UK yielded base-line levels in a non-endemic symptomatic population. IgG, IgM, and IgA levels were estimated to E. histolytica and G. lamblia using an ELISA. Concomittant faecal examinations were done for the Indian children. There was a significant correlation between acquisition of sero-positivity and age. A rise in the IgG response to both organisms was

Acute childhood diarrhea is one of the leading causes of childhood morbidity and mortality in sub-Saharan African countries. Entamoeba histolytica and Giardia lamblia are the common cause of childhood diarrhea in the region. However, there are only few studies on protozoa causing diarrhea in sub-Saharan African countries. This study was conducted to investigate the relative prevalence and explore risk factors of E. histolytica and G. lamblia among diarrheic children of under 5 years in a public hospital of Ethiopia. A retrospective study was conducted among diarrheic children at Hiwot Fana hos…

BACKGROUND: Schistosomiasis is a neglected tropical disease (NTD) that affects around 200 million people worldwide, the majority of whom are children aged 5 to 15 years. It is one of the most significant public health problems in tropical and subtropical regions. Entamoeba histolytica infection is common in areas where schistosomiasis is endemic because Schistosoma mansoni infection can reduce the host's immune response, resulting in increased morbidity.

A wide range of protozoan pathogens either transmitted by vectors (Plasmodium, Babesia, Leishmania and Trypanosoma), by contaminated food or water (Entamoeba and Giardia), or by sexual contact (Trichomonas) invade various organs in the body and cause prominent human diseases, such as malaria, babesiosis, leishmaniasis, trypanosomiasis, diarrhea, and trichomoniasis. Humans are frequently exposed to multiple pathogens simultaneously, or sequentially in the high-incidence regions to result in co-infections. Consequently, synergistic or antagonistic pathogenic effects could occur between microbes …
