Enhancing aerobic composting of food waste by adding hydrolytically active microorganisms.

The biomass of native microorganisms in food waste (FW) suitable for accelerated composting is initially low and requires time for adaptation. Adding of efficient hydrolytic microorganisms should be able to enhance compost-specific microbial activity, adjust microbial community structure, and potentially hasten FW biodegradation. This study aimed to identify bacterial and fungal strains with growth characteristics suitable for accelerating FW composting. Over 7 weeks, FW was composted in a pilot-scale test, either inoculated at the start or on day 28 with three different mixtures of 10 autocht

Prefeeding of Clarias gariepinus with Spirulina platensis counteracts petroleum hydrocarbons-induced hepato- and nephrotoxicity.

Petroleum aromatic hydrocarbons are considered one of the most dangerous aquatic pollutants due to their widespread across water bodies, persistence, and extension to the food chain. To our knowledge, there hasn't been any research investigating the hepatorenoprotective effects of Spirulina platensis (SP) against toxicity induced by these environmental toxicants in fish. Thus, we decided to explore its potential safeguarding against benzene and toluene exposure in adult Clarias gariepinus. To achieve this objective, fish were divided into five groups (60 per group; 20 per replicate). The first

Chronic olanzapine treatment leads to increased opioid receptor expression and changes in feeding regulating neurons in the female rat hypothalamus.

Opioid receptor antagonists have shown increasing promise as an adjunct therapy to psychotropic medication. The goal is to reduce the weight gain and metabolic adverse effects that are associated with certain second-generation antipsychotics, such as olanzapine and clozapine. In this study, female rats were treated for 4 weeks with a long-acting injectable formulation of olanzapine to assess effects on hypothalamic feeding regulation. Using quantitative spatial in situ hybridization and receptor autoradiography, expression levels of the mu, kappa and delta opioid receptors were defined in the

Sources of pharmacokinetic and pharmacodynamic variability and clinical pharmacology studies of antiseizure medications in the pediatric population.

Multiple treatment options exist for children with epilepsy, including surgery, dietary therapies, neurostimulation, and antiseizure medications (ASMs). ASMs are the first line of therapy, and more than 30 ASMs have U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) approval for the treatment of various epilepsy and seizure types in children. Given the extensive FDA approval of ASMs in children, it is crucial to consider how the physiological and developmental changes throughout childhood may impact drug disposition. Various sources of pharmacokinetic (PK) variability from different extrinsic and intrins

Trientine Tetrahydrochloride, From Bench to Bedside: A Narrative Review.

Trientine tetrahydrochloride (TETA-4HCl, Cuvrior®) is a copper chelating agent with the active moiety triethylenetetramine (trientine), developed by Orphalan, Inc. to address the unmet needs in the treatment of Wilson disease. The journey from bench to bedside builds upon the documented safety profile of trientine hydrochloride capsules developed initially to meet the needs of individuals intolerant to D-penicillamine (DPA). Trientine hydrochloride capsules are inherently unstable requiring strict cold chain storage conditions from production, transportation, and use at home by the patient. Tr

Relieving postherpetic neuralgia pain via gabapentin-loaded bigels as an auspicious topical drug delivery system.

BACKGROUND: Over the past decades, a substantial portion of the population worldwide has been infected with varicella zoster and most cases developed shingles. Unfortunately, shingles is usually accompanied by postherpetic neuralgia, which may persist for months to years after the resolution of the viral infection. OBJECTIVES: Gabapentin is an orally gamma-aminobutyric acid analogue approved by the Food and Drug Administration to manage shingles postherpetic neuralgia. However, gabapentin shows nonlinear pharmacokinetics, with variable absorption and bioavailability along with its short half-

Monophosphoryl Lipid A-based Adjuvant to Promote the Immunogenicity of Multivalent Meningococcal Polysaccharide Conjugate Vaccines.

Activation of the adaptive immune system requires the engagement of costimulatory pathways in addition to B and T cell Ag receptor signaling, and adjuvants play a central role in this process. Many Gram-negative bacterial polysaccharide vaccines, including the tetravalent meningococcal conjugate vaccines (MCV4) and typhoid Vi polysaccharide vaccines, do not incorporate adjuvants. The immunogenicity of typhoid vaccines is due to the presence of associated TLR4 ligands in these vaccines. Because the immunogenicity of MCV4 is poor and requires boosters, I hypothesized that TLR4 ligands are absent

The Interventions to Minimize Pain During Photodynamic Therapy With 5-Aminolevulinic Acid for the Treatment of Cutaneous Diseases.

Photosensitization with 5-aminolevulinic acid (ALA) combined with photodynamic therapy (PDT) is approved in the United States for the treatment of actinic keratosis (AK) and is used off-label for other indications including acne treatment and photo rejuvenation. However, pain, particularly during the initial illumination period, limits the utility of this highly efficacious therapy. Although modifications to conventional ALA-PDT protocols that improve tolerability without diminishing efficacy have been identified, few have been evaluated in randomized, controlled trials, and the number of vari

Black-Box Warnings of Antiseizure Medications: What is Inside the Box?

Antiseizure medications can cause serious adverse reactions and have deleterious drug interactions that often complicate the clinical management of patients. When the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) wants to alert healthcare providers and patients about the risk of potentially serious or fatal drug reactions, the FDA requires the manufacturers of these medications to format these warnings within a "black-box" border, and prominently display this box on the first section of the package insert; such warnings are called "black-box warnings (BBWs)". The BBW is a way for the FDA to urge physi

Astragalus improves intestinal barrier function and immunity by acting on intestinal microbiota to treat T2DM: a research review.

Diabetes is a significant chronic endocrine/metabolism disorder that can result in a number of life-threatening consequences. According to research, the gut microbiota is strongly linked to the development of diabetes, making it a viable target for diabetes treatment. The intestinal microbiota affects intestinal barrier function, organism immunity, and thus glucose metabolism and lipid metabolism. According to research, a disruption in the intestinal microbiota causes a decrease in short-chain fatty acids (SCFAs), alters the metabolism of bile acids (BAs), branched-chain amino acids (BCAAs), l

Expression of a mosquito larvicidal gene in chloroplast and nuclear compartments of Chlamydomonas reinhardtii.

As a part of the search for environment-friendly biocontrol of mosquito-borne diseases, mosquito larvicidal potential of Bacillus thuringiensis subsp. jegathesan (Btj) Cry toxins is explored for toxins with increased toxicity. Safe delivery of the Cry toxins to mosquito larvae in aquatic habitats is a major concern. This is because in water bodies Bacillus thuringiensis (Bt) protein formulations degrade by sunlight, can sink down and get adsorbed by the silt. So, because of its short persistence the toxin requires repeated applications at the given site. Therefore, an upcoming approach is inco

Evaluation of the mineral composition, phytochemical and proximate constituents of three culinary spices in Nigeria: a comparative study.

Spices are prolific sources of phytochemicals of pharmaceutical and nutritional importance. They have been employed for centuries in the treatment of various maladies, in cuisines, and as inhibitors of oxidative degradation in foods. On this premise, a comparative assessment of the quantitative mineral composition, phytochemical and proximate constituents of Xylopia aethiopica (fruits), Piper guineense (seeds), and Rhaphiostylis beninensis (roots) was done using standard protocols. Subsequently, methanol extracts of the spices were subjected to Gas Chromatography-Mass Spectrometry (GC-MS) anal

Diroximel Fumarate as a Novel Oral Immunomodulating Therapy for Relapsing Forms of Multiple Sclerosis: A Review on the Emerging Data.

Multiple sclerosis (MS) is a chronic inflammatory, demyelinating and neurodegenerative disorder of the central nervous system. Disease-modifying drugs (DMDs) and subsequent adherence are crucial for preventing reversible episodes of neurological dysfunction and delayed onset of progressive accumulation of irreversible deficits. Yet, side effects may limit their usage in clinical practice. Gastrointestinal (GI) side effects are a significant limitation of the use of dimethyl fumarate (DMF), the most frequently prescribed oral DMD in MS worldwide. Diroximel fumarate (DRF) is a second-generation

Recent advances in the diagnosis and management of typhoid fever in Africa: A review.

Typhoid fever, a classical disease of enteric origin caused by Salmonella species of bacteria, is among the most important diseases threatening public health in Africa. The African continent is a marker for both low resources within the healthcare system and poor disease control policy formulations in managing endemic infectious diseases. Since the colonial era, the Widal serological test has been used to confirm typhoid fever in Africa, however recent studies recommend blood culture, and when blood culture cannot be obtained, clinical findings, laboratory Widal test confirmation, and ruling o

Rectosigmoid transition perforation by ingá (Inga laurina) seeds in the Brazilian amazon: Case report and surgical treatment.

INTRODUCTION: Foreign body ingestion is a common clinical scenario found in clinical practice. Perforations related to foreign bodies are rare, but they can present as a serious condition in emergency surgery services. The most common sites of perforation are angled areas, such as: ileocecal valve, sigmoid colon, duodenojejunal flexure and small intestine. We are going to describe a rare case of extensive perforation of rectosigmoid transition, without associated obstructive clinical picture, related to voluntary ingestion of foreign body caused by multiple seeds of a typical amazon fruit.
