RATIONALE: Percutaneous vertebroplasty (PVP) is widely used to treat vertebral compression fractures. Although it is generally considered a minimally invasive procedure, leakage and systemic migration of polymethylmethacrylate bone cement may rarely occur and can cause potentially fatal cardiovascular complications. Intracardiac bone cement embolism accompanied by perforation of the right ventricle and inferior vena cava (IVC) is particularly uncommon.
PATIENT CONCERNS: A 70-year-old woman presented with palpitations and perioral numbness 2 months after undergoing PVP for an L4 vertebral comp

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Prolonged biliary stenting may lead to complications such as cholangitis, stentolith and stent migration. There is limited data on forgotten biliary stents for more than five years in literature. The aim of this retrospective study was to analyze the complications and outcomes in patients who forgot to get their biliary stents removed or exchanged for more than five years.
METHODS: The study population included patients who underwent endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatography (ERCP) and plastic biliary stent placements in a tertiary care center from 1990 to 2022

BACKGROUND: Transcatheter aortic valve implantation (TAVI) has proven over the years to be a viable alternative to open surgery. A rare but severe complication is represented by the valve migration. We report a case of TAVI complication due to the loss of the prosthetic valve in the abdominal aorta treated by endovascular approach.
METHODS: An 88-year-old patient with severe aortic valve stenosis, symptomatic for dyspnea was proposed for a TAVI because considered at high risk for surgery. During the TAVI procedure, the undeployed device (Edwards SAPIEN 3 - Edwards Lifesciences, Irvine, CA, US

Delayed embolization of ductal occluder device into the aorta after transcatheter closure of a patent ductus arteriosus (PDA) with almost complete obstruction of the aorta is extremely rare. Our patient had delayed migration of a ductal occluder device into the descending thoracic aorta (DTA) 6 months after its deployment. Because of critical biventricular dysfunction, urgent surgical removal of the device from the descending aorta was done via left posterolateral thoracotomy without using cardiopulmonary bypass. PDA was not closed because of doubt about the reversibility of pulmonary artery h

Ischemia is a common complication of various endovascular procedures including endovascular aortic aneurysm repair. Multiple mechanisms can contribute to the pathogenesis of ischemia: thrombosis, arterial dissection, graft malpositioning, cholesterol embolization, and polymer graft embolization which is an underrecognized complication. To the best of our knowledge, only 38 cases of polymer graft embolization have been reported in the literature. The phenomenon has been reported in different organs including brain, heart, lungs, kidneys, bowel, liver, and skin. We report a unique case of fatal

Hydrophilic polymer coatings are now widely applied to catheters and other intravascular devices used in neurovascular, cardiovascular, and peripheral vascular procedures. Emboli consisting of these materials have been previously identified in biopsies and autopsies following pulmonary infarction, stroke, gangrene, or death. We report a case involving a nonhealing foot ulcer that appeared following cardiac catheterization, stenting, and automatic implanted cardiac defibrillator (AICD) implantation in a patient without other evidence of significant peripheral artery disease. An 85-year-old woma

A 23-year-old healthy man was scheduled for extraction of his mandibular third molars under general anesthesia with nasotracheal intubation. Sudden sinus tachycardia up to 170 beats/min occurred when applying an epinephrine solution-soaked swab into the nasal cavity for preventing epistaxis during intubation. This was presumably evoked by submucosal migration of the swab into a false passage created because of the force applied during a prior failed attempt at nasal passage of the tracheal tube, and rapid epinephrine absorption by the traumatized mucosa. The causes of the unexpected severe tac

BACKGROUND: Stent migration is a common complication in treating trachea stenosis. There is no report concerning suture fixation of tracheal stent. The aim of this study was to investigate whether suture fixation of tracheal stent could avoid stent migration in patients with upper trachea stenosis. The complications were further investigated.
METHODS: The patients with upper trachea stenosis who underwent tracheal stent placement for benign/malignant conditions in our hospital between May 2016 and April 2018 were retrospectively reviewed. Clinical data were collected for each patient, includi

Background and purpose - Biological fixation of uncemented knee prostheses can be improved by applying hydroxyapatite coating around the porous surface via a solution deposition technique called Peri-Apatite (PA). The 2-year results of a randomized controlled trial, evaluating the effect of PA, revealed several components with continuous migration in the second postoperative year, particularly in the uncoated group. To evaluate whether absence of early stabilization is diagnostic of loosening, we now present long-term follow-up results. Patients and methods - 60 patients were randomized to PA-

Boerhaave's syndrome or spontaneous oesophageal perforation is associated with significant mortality de-pending on time of diagnosis and initiation of treatment. However, the diagnosis is often delayed, as the condition mimics more frequent causes of chest- and abdominal pain. This case report describes a patient with severe upper ab-dominal and back pain following ructus in an effort to loosen a piece of candy stuck in the oesophagus. The case demon-strates, that Boerhaave's syndrome should always be con-sidered in patients presenting with acute chest- or upper abdominal pain.

Posterior instrumented fusion of the cervical spine is a common surgical procedure in the treatment of cervical subluxation, fractures, and stenosis. Although malpositions are commonly seen, it is rare to observe the malposition of the rod or interconnection because of hardware failure. A 62-year-old woman with spastic tetraparesis as a sequel to pediatric meningitis with C1 -C2 cervical subluxation and myelomalacia had undergone laminectomy of C1 and C1 lateral mass and C2 bilateral pedicular screw fixation. Three years after the stabilization, she presented with complaints of headache, neck

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: Central venous catheters (CVCs) have a prominent role in the diagnostic and therapy of neonates and children. Herein, we describe the multiple indications for CVC use and the different devices available for central venous access. Given the prevalent use of CVCs, healthcare systems are focused on reducing complications from their use, particularly central line-associated bloodstream infections (CLABSIs). The most up-to-date information available sheds light on best practices and future areas of investigation.
RECENT FINDINGS: Large systematic reviews of randomized trials sug

An 81-year-old woman who had undergone total hip arthroplasty 12 years earlier presented with a painful spontaneous hematoma in the proximal left thigh. A left hip radiograph showed a displaced cement fragment from the acetabular component of the hip prosthesis. Computed tomography confirmed an extruded cement fragment causing a large pseudoaneurysm of the deep femoral artery. The patient underwent successful percutaneous embolization of the pseudoaneurysm with coils.

Percutaneous balloon kyphoplasty is a relatively simple, convenient, and minimally invasive procedure in which polymethylmethacrylate bone cement is used to manage back pain and spinal instability associated with osteoporotic compression fractures and other osteolytic spinal lesions. However, cement leakage into the venous system is a serious complication following percutaneous balloon kyphoplasty. A 74-year-old woman presented with cardiac perforation and pulmonary embolism caused by cement leakage into her venous system. She subsequently underwent surgery to effectively remove a needle-shape

Although numerous complications of the Seldinger technique have been reported in the literature, only a few complications are related to guidewires. We here report a case of a patient with a guidewire lost and retained in the aorta during vertebral artery stenting. Unfortunately, the guidewire in the aorta was not detected for 5 years, and it penetrated through the aorta into the left thorax, leading to recurrent left pneumothorax. No physician identified the wandering guidewire in the left thorax, and the recurrent left pneumothorax was only managed with closed thoracostomy drainage several t

We report an unusual cause of failure of successful delivery of antegrade cardioplegia through the aortic root that was caused by the accidental passage of the left ventricular vent catheter across the aortic valve producing acute aortic regurgitation. This problem is best prevented.

Accidentally ingested foreign bodies, for the most part, pass through the gastrointestinal tract, but can cause several complications. Perforation is rare, but can occur in any segment of the gastrointestinal tract. Intestinal perforations due to foreign bodies are rarely diagnosed preoperatively as clinical symptoms are non-specific and they can mimic other abdominal conditions. We describe a case of a 48-year-old patient who was admitted to the emergency room because of severe abdominal pain of 5 d duration. A computed tomography scan showed an undefined liquid collection involving a linear
