Simultaneous heart and kidney transplantation (SHKT) has become an accepted therapeutic option for patients with end-stage heart failure ass … ft rejection nor allograft coronary vasculopathy. We observed that patients without dyslipidemia or hyperuricemia before SHKT were less likely to develop these disorders under the combined regimen. Early medical intervention after close follow-up of lipid and uric acid values by dose adjustments resulted in a stable status of our patients.

BACKGROUND: Gout in the axial spine is rare. We present a case report on a renal transplant patient who developed fever and acute back pain … conservative medical management is appropriate for those with back pain only. Aggressive control of hyperuricemia is essential regardless of the method of treatment.

Severe metabolic abnormalities occurring within 100 days after allogeneic hematopoietic cell transplantation (HCT) were investigated in 311 patients. The metabolic abnormalities included hyper- and hypocalcemia, hypophosphatemia, hyper- and hypokalemia, hyper- and hyponatremia, hyper- and hypomagnesemia, hypercholesterolemia, hyper- and hypoglycemia, and hyperuricemia. Severe abnormalities, defined as grades III-V by NCI CTCAE v3.0, occurred in 269 patients (86.5%). Multivariate analysis revealed that patients with moderate-to-severe hepatic veno-occlusive disease had significantly higher risk…

Hypoxanthine phosphoribosyl transferase (HPRT, also known as HGPRT) is an often-used genetic marker in eukaryotic cells. The gene is conserved from bacteria to human, with retained catalytic activity, although substrate specificity may have changed, and the enzyme is essential in malaria-causing protozoans. Inherited mutations in the human HPRT1 gene result in three different phenotypes: Lesch-Nyhan syndrome (LNS or LND), LND variants, and HPRT-related hyperuricemia (HRH). In cultured cells, loss of HPRT activity gives rise to 6-thioguanine (6-TG) resistance. In general, cells from LND patient…

Ten cases of Lesch-Nyhan syndrome have been followed for 3-19 years (mean, 11 years and four months). Criteria of Lesch-Nyhan syndrome were restricted to the following: complete absence of hypoxanthine-guanine phosphoribosyltransferase (HPRT) in hemolysate and fibroblast, spasticity, choreoathetosis, mental retardation, self-mutilation, and occurrence in males. Two patients have died of pneumonia and two died suddenly. However, autopsies produced no positive findings. Hyperuricemia has been controlled by benzbromarone in nine patients. One patient did not take any medical treatment and died su…

Patients with kidney disease often exhibit pathological alterations such as gut dysbiosis, accumulation of uremic toxins, and systemic infla … complications, including mineral and bone disorders, cardiovascular and cerebrovascular events, and hyperuricemia. Moreover, microecological agents have demonstrated beneficial effects in attenuating renal injury in acute kidney injury (AKI), reducing the incidence of nephrolithiasis, and exerting a modulatory role in lupus nephritis (LN). OBJECTIVE: Gout is the most common form of arthritis, and results from reduced renal excretion of uric acid. A link between environmental pollution and hyperuricemia has been identified, but the underlying mechanisms remain unknown. Our aim was to determine whether the Aryl Hydrocarbon Receptor (AHR), one of the main mediators of the toxicity of environmental pollutants, could be involved in uric acid homeostasis.
METHODS: Murine models based on pharmacological activation of AHR were used, as well as a mouse model with Ahr gene knockout, to analyze the impact of this receptor on renal uric ac…

Hyperuricemia (HUA) impaires spermatogenesis. This study was carried out, aiming to determine whether butyric acid (NaB) avoids the HUA-induced decline of sperm quality HUA mice were developed through intra-peritoneal injection of the potassium oxalate combined with intragastric uric acid (UA) and by tube feeding 300 mg·kg-1·d-1NaB. The effect of NaB on the reproduction of HUA male mice was determined by measuring sperm count, sperm motility and testosterone content. In addition, TM3 and GC-2 cells were treated with a solution containing 30 mg/dl UA and 1mM NaB. The effects of NaB on the sperm…

The interconnection between brain function and hyperuricemia remains controversial since the available evidence indicates both the potent neuroprotective role of uric and its negative cardiovascular and metabolic effects, possible prooxidant activity. A mixed (protective and risk) effect of uric acid (UA) on neurological disorders was assumed. Among the neurodegenerative diseases, Alzheimer's disease remains the most prevalent, causes disability, and lacks highly effective treatments. Therefore, this review aims to delineate the beneficial and detrimental effects of uric acid on Alzheimer's di…

Hyperuricemia (HUA) is a metabolic disorder characterized by abnormal purine metabolism within the body. Ampelopsis japonica (Thunb.) Makino has traditionally been utilized in the treatment of various kidney diseases; however, its specific anti-hyperuricemic effects and the underlying mechanisms warrant further investigation. This study investigates the mechanism of action by which A. japonica extract (AJE) addresses HUA using a combination of pharmacology techniques, including network pharmacology and metabolomics. A HUA mouse model was established using potassium oxonate and hypoxanthine. AJ…

BACKGROUND: Glycogen storage disease (GSD) is a rare inherited metabolic disorder characterized by manifestations such as hypoglycemia, hyperlactatemia, hyperuricemia, and hyperlipidemia. With advancements in medical care, an increasing number of individuals with GSD are surviving into adulthood and reaching reproductive age, thereby posing significant challenges in pregnancy management. Gestational hyperlipidemic pancreatitis is a rare but potentially life-threatening obstetric emergency associated with a high mortality rate.

PURPOSE: In addition to allogeneic factors, kidney transplant recipients (KTR) remain exposed to non-allogeneic conditions, such as hypertension, proteinuria, anemia, bone mineral disorder, metabolic acidosis and hyperuricemia. These conditions contribute to the progression of chronic kidney disease (CKD). This paper reviews the latest updates on therapeutic goals and strategies to address these non-allogeneic risk factors.
METHODS: We undertook a literature review regarding the current recommendations and therapeutic targets for the treatment of non-allogeneic risk factors for CKD progressio…

Madelung disease is an uncommon metabolic disorder of uncertain pathogenesis, distinguished by the symmetric accumulation of nonencapsulated adipose tissue within the subcutaneous layer of the neck, abdomen, thighs, and other anatomical regions. This condition has been tightly connected with comorbidities including diabetes, dyslipidemia, hyperuricemia, hypothyroidism, and adrenal dysfunction, as well as sensory, motor, and autonomic polyneuropathy. The prevalence of Madelung disease is conspicuously higher in Mediterranean and Eastern European, with a distinct scarcity within the Asian popula…

The consumption of fructose has increased dramaticly during the last few decades, inducing a great increase in the risk of intrahepatic lipid accumulation, hypertriglyceridemia, hyperuricemia and cancer. However, the underlying mechanism has not yet been fully elucidated. Amino acid metabolism may play an important role in the process of the diseases caused by fructose, but there is still a lack of corresponding evidence. In present study, we provide an evidence of how fructose affects amino acids metabolism in 1895 ordinary residents in Chinese community using UPLC-QqQMS based amino acid targ…

The prevalence and incidence rates (95% CIs) of NAFLD in the patients with hyperuricemia were 65% (57-73%) and 31% (20-41%), respectively. In the subgroup analyses, we found that SUA levels …
