Profile Trait Changes at Peak Height Velocity in Girls and Boys: A Longitudinal Study.

Objective This longitudinal, correlational study aims to quantify skeletal and soft tissue facial changes in girls (9.5-10 years) and boys (12.5-13 years) during peak height velocity using lateral cephalograms. It further seeks to determine the strength and nature of associations between specific cephalometric parameters and incremental changes in standing height over defined time intervals. Materials and methods Forty subjects (girls: 9.5-10 years, boys: 12.5-13 years) were recruited through screenings. Lateral cephalograms and standing height measurements were recorded at three time points (

Health state utilities associated with invasive pneumococcal disease, pneumonia, and recurrent acute otitis media in young children.

PURPOSE: Cost-utility analyses examining the value of new vaccines for pneumococcal disease will require health state utilities as inputs. Existing utilities for pneumococcal infections in young children are limited. The purpose of this study was to estimate health state utilities associated with pneumococcal infections in young children. METHODS: Six health state vignettes depicting infections due to Streptococcus pneumoniae were drafted based on published literature and clinician interviews. To address methodological challenges in estimating utilities for temporary infections in children 0-

Cyclophilin 20-3 coordinates plant root hair growth and resistance against parasitic nematodes.

Plant parasitic nematodes (PPN) are a major threat to agriculturally important crops, resulting in substantial yield losses and economic repercussions. However, the underlying modes of plant-PPN interactions remain largely elusive. Here, we describe a critical role of cyclophilin (CYP)20-3, a plastid dual enzyme [i.e., peptidyl-prolyl isomerase (PPIase) and reductase) in plant basal resistance against PPN attacks. Originally, in order to define a present working model of whether plant roots deploy hypersensitive response (HR) to restrict PPN infections, we co-imaged the 'real-time' interaction

Impact of alcohol strength on attitudes and decisions concerning special occasion drinking during pregnancy.

BACKGROUND: Special occasions are a risk factor for drinking during pregnancy. This study determined the impact of alcohol strength on attitudes around, and perceived harm of, drinking in pregnancy. If perceived harm decreases with lower strength alcohol, this may promote drinking when abstinence is recommended. METHODS: Two online 'special occasion' vignette studies randomised female participants to one of three drink strength conditions (11%, 7.5%, 0% alcohol beverage volume [ABV]). In the study (N = 1128), participants were asked to imagine themselves or someone else choosing to consume th

Expansive bodies and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease under mass supervision.

Negative health outcomes experienced by individuals and communities impacted by carceral systems have been documented across the social science and public health literature for some time. This research has tended to prioritize the health impact of incarceration, while outcomes associated with the largest system of correctional control, community supervision (e.g. parole and probation), have only recently begun to be examined. These examinations have tended to prioritize structural pathways, deploying a "social determinants of health" framework ubiquitous in public health research and policy ma

A Linguistic Analysis of Future Perceptions of Parents of Adolescents With Complex Regional Pain Syndrome and Parents of Pain-Free Peers.

BACKGROUND: Complex regional pain syndrome (CRPS) is a chronic pain condition which typically affects a body extremity and occurs more frequently from the onset of adolescence. Parents of adolescents with chronic pain report uncertainty and fear concerning their adolescent's transition to adulthood. Nonetheless, little is known about how parents of adolescents with CRPS perceive their adolescent's future. METHODS: This study sought to explore the future perceptions of parents of adolescents with CRPS (n = 45) and compare their use of language with a sample of parents of adolescents without ch

Using FRAM visualisations in quality improvement projects: identifying and testing strategies to improve anticoagulant use in the perioperative process.

BACKGROUND: To improve healthcare processes, gaining a thorough understanding of the work is important. The Functional Resonance Analysis Method (FRAM) is a method that can be used for this purpose by visualising how different steps in a process interact. However, little research is available on the use and feasibility of FRAM in quality improvement studies. Therefore, the objective of this study is to assess the feasibility of using FRAM visualisations in a quality improvement study to identify, formulate and test improvement strategies regarding anticoagulant use in the perioperative process

Modelling the human coenzyme Q deficiency in Drosophila melanogaster.

The interference of the expression of each of the genes involved in the synthesis of coenzyme Q (CoQ) in Drosophila melanogaster can help to understand the pathophysiology of CoQ-dependent mitochondrial diseases in humans. We have knocked-down all genes involved in the CoQ biosynthesis pathway at different temperatures to induce depletion of CoQ at different levels throughout the body and in a tissue-specific manner. The efficiency of the knockdowns was quantified by Q-RTPCR and determination of CoQ levels by HPLC-UV + ECD. We performed mitochondria purification and quantified respiratory chai

Associations between habitual walking speed and in vivo tibial cartilage strain in individuals with anterior cruciate ligament reconstruction.

OBJECTIVES: The purpose of the study was to determine associations between habitual walking speed and an in vivo magnetic resonance imagining (MRI) measure of tibial cartilage strain following primary anterior cruciate ligament reconstruction (ACLR). METHODS: Habitual walking speed was collected over ground in 12 individuals (5 Males/7 Females). Participants underwent an MRI of their ACLR knee to capture resting tibial articular cartilage thickness. Following the MRI, participants walked on a treadmill at their habitual walking speed for 3000 steps. Cartilage thickness was calculated for pre-

Little ears - Aboriginal programmes for hearing and EAR screening (LEAP - HEAR): a research protocol for co-design workshops to strengthen programmes.

INTRODUCTION: Multiple well-considered but siloed initiatives and programmes exist in Australia to support ear and hearing screening and assessment for Indigenous children. However, the lack of coordination of these programmes leads to inefficiencies in resource allocation and disrupts opportunities to implement a cost-effective, efficient, and easily navigable system of care. Indigenous children experience high prevalence rates of middle ear disease, as well as earlier onset, increased severity and longer infections compared with non-Indigenous children. The aims of this study are to: (1) Und

Expanding the Scope of Open Weighing to Target Anxiety About the Consequences of Weight Gain in Cognitive-Behavioral Therapy for Eating Disorders.

OBJECTIVE: Anxiety about weight gain is a central feature of eating disorders (EDs) and plays a key role in maintaining ED symptomatology. Cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT) experts have observed that patients with EDs often believe regular eating will lead to immediate, dramatic, and/or uncontrollable weight gain, prompting interventions like "collaborative weighing" and "open weighing" that help patients develop a realistic understanding of eating-weight relationships. However, patients also report anxiety about the consequences of weight gain (e.g., social rejection, self-hatred, permanent

Effects of rhythmic-cued gait training on gait-like task related brain activation in people with multiple sclerosis.

BACKGROUND: Walking impairment is one of the most debilitating symptoms of multiple sclerosis (MS). A better understanding of brain mechanisms underlying successful gait training could help to improve development of targeted therapy. We therefore investigated changes in brain activation associated with improvements in walking function after rhythmic-cued gait training. METHODS: Thirty-one people with MS (pwMS; median EDSS = 2.5, range:2.0-5.0) and 17 age- and sex-matched healthy controls (HC) completed behavioural and MRI assessments at baseline and post-intervention (four weeks after baselin

Prediction for children with autism spectrum disorder based on digital behavioral features during free play.

BACKGROUND: Play is an indispensable and meaningful activity in children's daily life. Research has shown that autistic children often exhibit differences in play development. The core traits of autism, such as distinct patterns in social interaction and communication, focused interests, and repetitive behaviors, frequently manifest in their play. Therefore, play may serve as an insightful measure of these differences. Unlike previous studies focusing on play behaviors only, we explored other behaviors associated with autism during free play, and constructed a clinical prediction model for eff

Revealing the larval anatomy of the hoverfly Sphaerophoria rueppellii (Wiedemann, 1820) (Diptera, Syrphidae) using micro-computed tomography.

Micro-computed tomography (micro-CT) is an X-ray-based technique that allows visualisation of the internal anatomy of insects in situ and does not require dissections. Traditionally, the study of insect anatomy has been mainly based on dissection techniques and microtome sections. However, micro-CT is becoming an increasingly widespread study technique. We report the use of micro-CT scans to study, in detail, the external and internal structures and organs of the third instar larva of the dipteran Syrphidae Sphaerophoria rueppellii, a Palaearctic species included in the list of effective agent
