Geographic Information Systems (GIS) analysis of 34 forecasted high West Nile virus (WNV) risk communities in British Columbia (BC), Canada was useful to assess feasibility and planning of the operational logistics of an emergency spray event in advance of a WNV outbreak. The geographic coverage and operational time required to perform ground- and aerial-based ultra-low volume (ULV) adulticiding were calculated using GIS. The mean geographic coverages of the ground-, aerial-, and combination of ground- and aerial-based adulticiding strategies were 39%, 61%, and 69%, respectively. The driving d

Addressing the malaria-agriculture linkages requires a broad inter-disciplinary and integrated approach that involves farming communities and key public sectors. In this paper, we report results of participatory involvement of farming communities in determining malaria control strategies in Mvomero District, Tanzania. A seminar involving local government leaders, health and agricultural officials comprising of a total of 27 participants was held. Public meetings in villages of Komtonga, Mbogo, Mkindo, Dihombo and Luhindo followed this. Findings from a research on the impact of agricultural pra

Visceral leishmaniasis (VL) caused by Leishmania infantum, is an endemic disease in Aegean and Mediterranean Regions among humans and dogs. In this study, a sero-epidemiological survey for VL and cutaneous leishmaniasis (CL), which both are sporadically reported in the region, were carried out in the villages of Eskisehir, Afyon, and Bilecik cities. The study was designed according to the location of the sporadic cases of VL and CL, and blood samples of 111 dogs were randomly collected. Lymph node aspiration samples were taken from dogs that have popliteal lymphadenopathy. Sand flies were also

Larvicidal potential of petroleum ether (Pee), carbon tetrachloride (Cte) and methanol extract (Mee) of Artemisia annua, Chenopodium album and Sonchus oleraceus was observed against malaria vector, Anopheles stephensi Liston. The Pee of A. annua with LC50 16.85 ppm after 24 h and 11.45 ppm after 48 h of treatment was found most effective, followed by Cte of A. annua and Ch. album, Pee of Ch. album and Mee of A. annua. However, no significant larvicidal activity was observed in Mee of Ch. album and all the three extracts of S. oleraceous. The Pee of A. annua was further investigated for its eff

St. Tammany Parish, Louisiana, experienced an outbreak of West Nile virus (WNV) in 2002, with 40 human cases and 4 deaths, most occurring from June to August. Culex pipiens quinquefasciatus was believed to be the primary vector of WNV during the outbreak, although circumstantial evidence suggests that Aedes albopictus also may have been involved in transmission. Dead bird reports were the 1st indication of the outbreak and were an excellent indicator of WNV activity; however, sentinel chickens were the most effective in tracking viral activity. Although sentinel chickens tested positive 2-3 wk

PURPOSE: The epidemiology, virology, and transmission of West Nile virus (WNV) are reviewed, and the clinical features, diagnosis, and treatment of WNV infection are examined.
SUMMARY: WNV infection is caused by a flavivirus transmitted from birds to humans through the bite of culicine mosquitoes. WNV was discovered in the blood of a febrile woman from Uganda's West Nile province in 1937. The first case of domestically acquired WNV infection was reported in the United States in 1999 in New York. Since then, WNV infection has spread rapidly across the United States, with 9306 confirmed cases a

Adherence with permethrin-treated bed net (ITN) use and their proper deployment was directly observed in 2,178 individuals (784 households) participating in a large-scale trial of ITNs on child mortality in western Kenya. The ITNs were distributed free of charge to ensure high coverage, resulting in a ratio of 1.46 persons per ITN. Approximately 30% of ITNs present were unused. The overall percentage adherence was 72.3%. The probability of adherence by individuals depended strongly on age (relative risk [RR] = 0.86, 95% confidence limit [CL] = 0.78-0.94), in which children less than five years

Lymphatic filariasis, one of the major public health problems can be controlled with the active participation of the community. The human factors involved in the disease transmission are important. The knowledge on the community perception and practice is essential to develop community oriented control programmes. A descriptive study was conducted in the filariasis endemic area of Cherthala, Kerala State, India, to identify the level of people's perception on Malayan filariasis. Two methods namely, interviews and uncontrolled observation were used in the study. A total of 450 respondents (150

Approximately 2 million people in Argentina are infected with Trypanosoma cruzi, the etiologic agent of Chagas disease, thereby constituting the major tropical disease in the country. As in other six Southern Cone countries, Triatoma infestans is the only or major vector of T. cruzi among human and domestic animals. In Argentina, a vertically structured National Chagas Control Program was established in 1962. Such a program pursued the elimination of domestic and peri-domestic populations of T. infestans through insecticidal spraying, and the serological control of blood donors to prevent tran

It has been shown that insecticide-treated bed nets or curtains may reduce morbidity and mortality from malaria in hyper-holoendemic areas of sub-Saharan Africa. This protection could partially depend on the transitory imbalance between the anti-malaria immunity acquired by the population before the intervention and the lowered sporozoite load resulting from the anti-vector measure. To verify if the efficacy of the intervention is influenced by the baseline immune status of the population, we compared the protective effect of permethrin-impregnated curtains (PIC) against malaria infection amon

An investigation was conducted into a severe flea infestation on dairy calves. Inspection of the dairy revealed a high infestation of Ctenocephalides felis felis on four calves and thousands of fleas in the stable where cows and calves were brought in for milking. A 3-month-old female calf was highly infested with fleas. The animal showed an evident lethargy, weight loss, as well as pale mucous membranes and dehydration. Hematological analysis revealed anemia, with 10% packed cell volume and a 1.72 x 10(6) microl(-1) erythrocyte count. Blood transfusions were performed and the flea infestation

In the Ghibe valley, south-west Ethiopia, a tsetse control trial using deltamethrin-impregnated targets was started in May 1990. The mean relative density of the main vector, Glossina pallidipes, fell from 2.1 flies per trap per day in the 12 months prior to introduction of tsetse control to 0.41 flies per trap per day in the 12 months after tsetse control was initiated. The annual mean prevalence of Trypanosoma congolense infections in cattle fell from 32% in the 2 years before tsetse control to 13% in the 2 years following deployment of targets. The largest reduction occurred in the first qu

The advances in the study of Afrotropical malaria vectors outlined in this report were obtained with the support of the EC-STD2 program by a network led by a research team of the Istituto di Parassitologia, University of Rome "La Sapienza" and including various collaborators based in different African countries. A list of authors and collaborating laboratories is given in the acknowledgements. The main results obtained are as follows. 1) Discovery of new chromosomally recognized taxa of the An. gambiae complex in Mali. One of them, the Mopti chromosomal form, is specifically adapted to breedin

Recent estimates of the costs of detection and treatment and vector control for human trypanosomiasis are summarized and the main factors influencing their levels discussed. In order to proceed to an economic analysis a benefit unit is defined as equivalent to one year's infection avoided due to the control strategy for one person. Different monetary values could be assigned to this unit and it has the advantage of being easily integrated into epidemiological models, being represented by the difference in prevalence with and without control. A simple spreadsheet-based economic model was develo

The resurgence of malaria in India began in 1966 and the states of Karnataka and Tamil Nadu were no exception to this phenomenon. In both states the peak occurrence came in 1976. Malaria was largely confined to highly vulnerable and receptive areas. The problem of increased incidence was particularly associated with the development of several irrigation and hydro-electric schemes. Improperly maintained irrigation systems and reservoirs provided ideal breeding grounds. The present paper examines the scope and limitations of a major anti-malaria activity, namely residual insecticide spraying as
