Effect of Probiotics and Multi-Component Feed Additives on Microbiota, Gut Barrier and Immune Responses in Broiler Chickens During Subclinical Necrotic Enteritis.

The withdrawal of antibiotic growth promoters from poultry feed has increased the risk of necrotic enteritis (NE) outbreaks. This study examined the effects of a probiotic (PROB) or probiotic/prebiotic/essential oil supplement (PPEO) during a subclinical NE challenge. On day (d) of hatch, 960 male broilers were randomized to four groups (8 pens/treatment, 30 birds/pen) including (1) negative control (NC): corn-soybean meal diet; (2) positive control (PC): NC + 20 g Virginiamycin/ton diet; (3) NC + 227 g PROB/ton diet; and (4) NC + 453 g PPEO/ton diet. One d after placement, birds were challeng

Nitric oxide-heat shock protein axis in menopausal hot flushes: neglected metabolic issues of chronic inflammatory diseases associated with deranged heat shock response.

BACKGROUND: Although some unequivocal underlying mechanisms of menopausal hot flushes have been demonstrated in animal models, the paucity of similar approaches in humans impedes further mechanistic outcomes. Human studies might show some as yet unexpected physiological mechanisms of metabolic adaptation that permeate the phase of decreased oestrogen levels in both symptomatic and asymptomatic women. This is particularly relevant because both the severity and time span of hot flushes are associated with increased risk of chronic inflammatory disease. On the other hand, oestrogen induces the ex

Physiological aspects of energy metabolism and gastrointestinal effects of carbohydrates.

The energy values of carbohydrates continue to be debated. This is because of the use of different energy systems, for example, combustible, digestible, metabolizable, and so on. Furthermore, ingested macronutrients may not be fully available to tissues, and the tissues themselves may not be able fully to oxidize substrates made available to them. Therefore, for certain carbohydrates, the discrepancies between combustible energy (cEI), digestible energy (DE), metabolizable energy (ME) and net metabolizable energy (NME) may be considerable. Three food energy systems are in use in food tables an

Commensal bacteria (normal microflora), mucosal immunity and chronic inflammatory and autoimmune diseases.

Commensal microflora (normal microflora, indigenous microbiota) consists of those micro-organisms, which are present on body surfaces covere … y, autoimmune and neoplastic diseases. Regulation of microflora composition (e.g. by probiotics and prebiotics) offers the possibility to influence the development of mucosal and systemic immunity but it can play a role also in prevention and treatment of some diseases.

The effects of a multispecies synbiotic on microbiome-related side effects of long-term proton pump inhibitor use: A pilot study.

Side effects of proton pump inhibitors (PPI) can be linked to the changes in the intestinal microbiome that occur during therapy, especially in long-term users. Therefore, the microbiome might also be a key player in the reduction of PPI side effects. We tested the effects of a three-month intervention with a multispecies synbiotic on intestinal inflammation, gut barrier function, microbiome composition, routine laboratory parameters and quality of life in patients with long-term PPI therapy. Thirty-six patients received a daily dose of a multispecies synbiotic for three months and were clinic

Nutrition and skin: Kids are not just little people.

There has been a surge of new data regarding the pathophysiology of skin diseases. We are appreciating the sophisticated interplay among the skin, the immune system, and the environment. More elegant and highly specific medicines have been designed to target certain immune mediators of the adaptive immune system. In parallel fashion, we are learning more about the elegance of the innate immune system and how nutrition as early as the prenatal period can affect the priming of other immune cells. Concerns about the long-term impact of new immune-modulating medicines-especially in the pediatric p

The endocannabinoid system links gut microbiota to adipogenesis.

Obesity is characterised by altered gut microbiota, low-grade inflammation and increased endocannabinoid (eCB) system tone; however, a clear connection between gut microbiota and eCB signalling has yet to be confirmed. Here, we report that gut microbiota modulate the intestinal eCB system tone, which in turn regulates gut permeability and plasma lipopolysaccharide (LPS) levels. The impact of the increased plasma LPS levels and eCB system tone found in obesity on adipose tissue metabolism (e.g. differentiation and lipogenesis) remains unknown. By interfering with the eCB system using CB(1) agon

Xylooligosaccharides ameliorate intestinal barrier injury by inhibiting apoptosis, RhoA/ROCK/MLCK signaling and NKG2DLs in intestinal epithelial cells.

Intestinal barrier (IB) dysfunction contributes to metabolic endotoxemia and associated diseases. Specifically, intestinal inflammation upregulates natural killer cell receptor 2D ligands (NKG2DLs) in intestinal epithelial cells (IECs), which triggers excessive immune responses and exacerbates IB injury. The prebiotic xylooligosaccharides (XOS) hold promise for ameliorating such injury by regulating NKG2DLs, yet the underlying mechanisms remain elusive. This study aimed to investigate the efficacy of XOS in improving IB injury and explore its role and molecular mechanisms in mitigating IB dama

Lactobacillus salivarius reverse diabetes-induced intestinal defense impairment in mice through non-defensin protein.

Altered intestinal microbiota and subsequent endotoxemia play pathogenic roles in diabetes. We aimed to study the mechanisms of intestinal defense impairment in type 1 diabetes and the effects of Lactobacillus salivarius as well as fructooligosaccharides (FOS) supplementation on diabetes-induced bacterial translocation. Alterations in the enteric microbiome, expression of mucosal antibacterial proteins and bacteria-killing activity of the intestinal mucosa in streptozotocin (STZ)-induced diabetic mice and Ins2(Akita) mice were investigated. The effects of dead L. salivarius (2×10(8)CFU/ml) and

Lactulose vs Lactobacillus acidophilus for patients with chronic kidney disease: A randomized controlled trial.

BACKGROUND: Chronic kidney disease (CKD) is associated with progressive accumulation of uremic toxins and chronic systemic inflammation. CKD management focuses on treating the underlying disease, controlling risk factors, slowing disease progression, and initiating renal replacement therapy in stage 5. Early CKD is often asymptomatic or presents with mild symptoms such as fatigue and nocturia, whereas symptoms become progressively more severe after stage 3 and worsen further with renal failure. Modulation of the gut microbiota using prebiotics or probiotics has emerged as a promising adjunctiv…

Prevotella-dominated dysbiosis and predicted suppression of sulfur biosynthesis pathways associated with halitosis in Korean adults.

Halitosis affects a substantial proportion of adults worldwide, yet the compositional and functional basis of the oral microbiome in halitosis remains incompletely understood, particularly in East Asian populations. We performed 16S rRNA gene amplicon sequencing of oral gargle samples from 45 individuals with halitosis and 45 healthy controls in South Korea, generating approximately 4,600 amplicon sequence variants. Beta diversity analysis revealed significant community-level separation (PERMANOVA, P = 0.001) and an elevated Firmicutes/Bacteroidota ratio in halitosis, although alpha diversity

Dietary modulation of intestinal integrity and functionality in weaned piglets using short-chain fructooligosaccharides, essential oils and sodium humate.

Early weaning is a critical stage in pig production, associated with intestinal and immunological stress that negatively impacts gut health and functionality. Given the global restrictions on antibiotic use, natural alternatives have gained increasing attention. This study aimed to evaluate the in vivo effects of short-chain fructooligosaccharides, essential oils and sodium humate on intestinal health in weaned piglets. Four dietary treatments were applied for 15 days to weaned piglets: a basal diet (control); short-chain fructooligosaccharides (scFOSs group); essential oils of L. origanoides

Hormonal Contraceptives and the Gut Microbiome in Female Athletes: Implications for Health, Performance, and Exercise-Related Physiological Adjustments.

Hormonal contraceptives are widely used among female athletes, with documented prevalence rates varying from 29% to 65% across different sports disciplines. Growing evidence suggests that hormonal contraceptives may influence the diversity and composition of the gut microbiome. A particular concern is a potential reduction in beneficial bacteria responsible for producing short-chain fatty acids, which could impact both overall health and the body's adaptation to exercise training. This narrative review examines the current understanding of the links between hormonal contraceptive use, changes
