Gray's Reinforcement Sensitivity Theory (RST) predicts that the Behavioral Inhibition System (BIS) may relate to coping-motivated problem gambling, given its central role in anxiety. Studies examining the BIS-problem gambling association, however, are mixed. The revised RST posits that the Behavioral Approach System (BAS) may moderate the effect of the BIS on coping-motivated problem gambling. A concurrently strong BAS may highlight the negatively reinforcing effects of gambling, which may strengthen coping motives and increase gambling-related harms. We examined these interactive effects to c

Studies of gambling starting before adulthood in the general population are either cross-sectional, based on the stability of these behaviors between 2 time points, or cover a short developmental period. The present study aimed at investigating the developmental trajectories of gambling problems across 3 key periods of development, mid-adolescence, early adulthood, and age 30, in a mixed-gender cohort from the general population. Using a semiparametric mixture model, trajectories were computed based on self-reports collected at ages 15 (N = 1,882), 22 (N = 1,785), and 30 (N = 1,358). Two disti

In rat studies, both lesions in the medial prefrontal cortex (mPFC) and alterations of the level of mPFC dopamine (DA) have been found to induce disturbances in behavioural flexibility, as measured with switching tasks. It is not clear whether mPFC DA is also involved in spontaneous flexibility. Therefore, the aim of the present study was to investigate the role of mPFC DA in spontaneous flexibility. As a measure for spontaneous flexibility, the diversity in spatial distribution of exploration on a large open field was used. The rats received local injections into the mPFC with a D1 or D2 anta

This study examined the prevalence rates of problem gambling among older adults in Singapore. A stratified sampling method was used to select the nationally representative sample of 3010 older adults aged 55 years and above. The survey participants were of varying ethnicities living in the community, including Chinese, Malay, and Indian (and others). A structured questionnaire, including the Canadian Problem Gambling Index, gambling attitudes and behaviors, and demographic information was administered face-to-face at participants' homes, using one of the four language versions preferred by the

OBJECTIVE: To determine whether children with hemifacial microsomia (HFM) have higher risk for psychosocial problems than children without HFM.
METHODS: One hundred and thirty-six children with HFM (64% male, mean age = 6.9 years) were compared to 568 matched controls (50% male, mean age = 7.0 years) on parent and teacher measures of behavior problems and social competence, and teacher rankings of peer acceptance.
RESULTS: Parents of cases and controls reported similar levels of behavior problems and social competence. Teachers reported higher frequencies of internalizing problems, lower soc

A growing body of evidence suggests that biological factors such as genes, hormone levels, brain structure, and brain functioning influence the development and trajectory of conduct problems in youth. In addition, biological factors affect how individuals respond to the environment, including how individuals respond to programs designed to prevent or treat conduct problems. Programs designed to reduce behavior problems in youth would have the greatest impact if they were targeted toward youth who need it the most (e.g., who are mostly likely to demonstrate persistent behavior problems) as well

BACKGROUND: Anabolic-androgenic steroids (AAS) are commonly taken to increase muscle size and enhance performance. However, AAS can lead to many adverse effects, including challenges with mental health and behavior. This study aims to identify behavioral and psychological correlates of AAS use, and explore associations with dependence symptoms among female weightlifters.
METHODS: A sample of n = 32 female weightlifters, including 16 with reported AAS use completed questionnaires including the Achenbach System of Empirically Based Assessment (ASEBA) and Buss-Perry Aggression Questionnaire (BPA

Since its inception, the John F. Kennedy Center has attempted to overcome developmental problems, which create restrictive barriers to the participation of individuals with specific disabilities in our broader society. Some of Nicholas Hobbs's earliest efforts involved developing strategies for preventing children's emotional and behavior problems, which interfered with their later full participation in society. Other investigators in the Kennedy Center explored ways of reducing dysfunctional repetitive movement problems and self-injury commonly associated with autism and severe mental retarda

Newly enacted Federal regulations have focused increasing attention on the use of psychoactive drugs and on the treatment of disruptive behavior in the nursing home. To study the interaction between resident behavior and staff distress in nursing homes, we measured the frequency of seven types of behavior problems among 346 residents of intermediate care facilities who were receiving some form of psychoactive medication. Nurses were interviewed on two shifts to determine their perception of the frequency and severity of each behavior in each patient as well as the level of distress it caused a

Excessive daytime sleepiness is a growing societal problem in adolescents. Empirical evidence demonstrates that adolescents experience significant sleepiness as a result of inadequate or disrupted sleep. Although the functional impairment caused by sleepiness in the pediatric population is less studied, children and adolescents do experience changes in behavior and a decline in performance as seen in the adult population. The end result is functional impairment in adolescents, which then places them at higher risk for unintentional injury.

Self-injury is a significant problem for many individuals with developmental disabilities, particularly those with severe or profound mental retardation. Many hypotheses have been suggested to account for self-injury, but none has been comprehensive. In this paper hypotheses suggesting psychological, behavioral, physiological, or neurochemical factors as causes of self-injury were critically reviewed. A compulsive behavior hypothesis was then introduced, which allows for alternative interpretations of some existing data and suggests several readily testable predictions.

Attention deficit, among the most commonly diagnosed functional deficits in pediatric neurology, is, like epilepsy, most often idiopathic. It can also be a symptom of many neuropathologic states. Although a lifelong problem, attention deficit is most troublesome during school years, because, like asthma, it is highly sensitive to environmental influence. The neurologist can consider attention deficit in its own right, apart from hyperkinesis and other associated behavior disorders, as a cognitive limitation and handicap to academic progress.

Agitated behaviors in the nursing home pose a major problem for caregivers. Our data showed that the three syndromes of agitation--aggressive behaviors, physically nonaggressive behaviors, and verbally agitated behaviors--are differentially related to medical and psychosocial variables. Physically nonaggressive behaviors may be adaptive for a resident who presents a deteriorated stage of dementia, since these behaviors offer stimulation and exercise. Verbally agitated behaviors may be a form of help-seeking behavior for residents with physical disease and depressed affect. Aggressive behaviors

IMPORTANCE: The veracity, nomenclature, and conceptualizations of sex addiction, out-of-control sexual behavior, hypersexual behavior, and impulsive or compulsive sexual behavior are widely debated. Despite such variation in conceptualization, all models concur on the prominent feature: failing to control one's sexual feelings and behaviors in a way that causes substantial distress and/or impairment in functioning. However, the prevalence of the issue in the United States is unknown.
OBJECTIVE: To assess the prevalence of distress and impairment associated with difficulty controlling sexual f

UNLABELLED: The new Brazilian Traffic Code considers drinking and driving as a traffic crime. A health behavior model suggests that much of the young people's risky behavior is not planned and that questions measuring the willingness to drink and drive are useful. In face of the importance of drinking and driving as a national health problem, the objective of the present study was to analyze the behavior willingness among youngsters about to receive their driver's licenses.
METHODS: The study was carried out at the Sao Paulo Department of Traffic (DETRAN-SP) in 1998. Data were obtained from a

UNLABELLED: Eating restrictions and alcohol use are prevalent problems on college campuses. Some students engage in eating restrictions prior to drinking to limit overall caloric intake or enhance intoxication. Limited research suggests drinking-related eating restrictions are associated with unique health risks relative to high-risk drinking alone.
OBJECTIVE: We examined the association between drinking-related eating restrictions and typical past 3-month alcohol consumption (quantity, frequency, binge-drinking, peak drinks) and problems, and assessed whether psychological factors (i.e., sel

Exposure to adverse childhood experiences (ACEs) such as child abuse and neglect impact a child's socioemotional development. Drawing from the methods employed in the Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACE; Felitti et al.,) Study, the present study utilized data from the National Survey of Child and Adolescent Well-Being to examine the prevalence of ACEs among children birth to 6 years, and the relationship of ACEs to emotional and behavioral outcomes 59 to 97 months after the close of investigation or assessment. Logistic regression also was used to examine the cumulative impact of ACEs on child

OBJECTIVE: The present study examined the role of family experiences in the early development and maintenance of oppositional defiant disorder (ODD) symptoms in preschool-age children with behavior problems.
METHOD: Participants were 199 3-year-old children with behavior problems who took part in 4 annual child and family assessments.
RESULTS: Children with behavior problems who were exposed to overreactive parenting practices, maternal depression, marital conflict, and lower family income tended to have more ODD symptoms 3 years later. Moreover, initial changes in paternal overreactivity an

This study investigates the impact of several types of exposure to terror attacks on adolescents' psychological outcomes in the context of ongoing terror. A total of 913 adolescents (51% girls) aged 12 to 18 years (12-13.6 = 33%; 13.7-15.6 = 38%; 15.7-18 = 28%) took part in the study. Detailed data were collected concerning objective, subjective and "mixed" types of exposure to terror, as well as demographics, post-traumatic stress symptoms (PTSS), emotional and behavioral problems and overall psychological and psychiatric difficulties. Subjective exposure was found to be the most important co
