Human monkeypox: an emerging zoonosis.

Human monkeypox is a rare viral zoonosis endemic to central and western Africa that has recently emerged in the USA. Laboratory diagnosis is important because the virus can cause disease that is clinically indistinguishable from other pox-like illnesses, particularly smallpox and chickenpox. Although the natural animal reservoir of the monkeypox virus is unknown, rodents are the probable source of its introduction into the USA. A clear understanding of the virulence and transmissibility of human monkeypox has been limited by inconsistencies in epidemiological investigations. Monkeypox is the m

DNA microarray analysis of genome dynamics in Yersinia pestis: insights into bacterial genome microevolution and niche adaptation.

Genomics research provides an unprecedented opportunity for us to probe into the pathogenicity and evolution of the world's most deadly pathogenic bacterium, Yersinia pestis, in minute detail. In our present work, extensive microarray analysis in conjunction with PCR validation revealed that there are considerable genome dynamics, due to gene acquisition and loss, in natural populations of Y. pestis. We established a genomotyping system to group homologous isolates of Y. pestis, based on profiling or gene acquisition and loss in their genomes, and then drew an outline of parallel microevolutio

Trichinellosis: old facts and new developments.

Trichinellosis is a helminth zoonosis, which is known since long, but which is emerging or re-emerging in several regions of the world. During the last years the number of cases of trichinellosis in pigs and man in several East-European countries has increased very much due to the breakdown of the veterinary services because of the difficult political and socio-economic situation. In several third world countries on the other hand trichinellosis has become more important due to the increasing number of small traditional pig farms, in which the hygienic conditions are suboptimal. Furthermore, o

[The plague in Madagascar: epidemiologic data from 1989 to 1995 and the national control program].

After briefly reviewing the history and epidemiological cycle of the plague in Madagascar, we report a detailed analysis of 5,927 suspected cases of plague observed from 1989 to 1995 (average of 846 cases per year). Of those, 1,337 individuals (average of 191 cases per year) were confirmed (by isolation of Yersinia pestis) or indicated to be probable for plague (by positive smears). Since 1994, we observed an increasing number of confirmed and probable cases (252 cases in 1995). Most of the cases occurred between October and April in the central highlands, inside a geographical triangle limite

A pseudoseasonal reproductive strategy in a tropical rodent, Peromyscus nudipes.

A population of cloud forest mice (Peromyscus nudipes) at latitude 10 degrees N near Monteverde, Costa Rica, was sampled four times by live-trapping twice during the 7-8 month wet season and twice during the 4-5 month dry season in 1989 and 1990. Body weights were lower during the early part of the dry season in males and throughout the dry season in females than at other times. Testes and seminal vesicles were somewhat lighter early in the dry season, but epididymal spermatozoa were abundant in most males throughout the year. Adult females ovulated, mated and became pregnant in the wet and dr

[Morphofunctional characteristics of the lipids in the early embryogeny of placental mammals].

The comparative cytological study of lipids points to species specific character of lipid metabolism in early embryogenesis of placentate mammals. The general level of lipid metabolism is genetically determined in oogenesis being expressed by different loading of the ooplasm with substances of lipoid nature. At the cleavage stage lipids play a plastic role. Their significance as functionally active complexes is manifested in the period of the blastocyst formation, which is dependent on morphological differentiation and the beginning of the trophoblast functioning as an early metabolic organ.

Burden of rodent-borne viruses in rodents and zoonotic risk in humans in Cambodia.

UNLABELLED: Rodent-borne viruses, including orthohantaviruses, mammarenaviruses, and rat hepatitis virus (HEV-C), pose significant health threats to humans, causing severe diseases such as hemorrhagic fevers, respiratory illness, and hepatitis. In Cambodia, data on these viruses remain limited, and their burdens on human health are unknown. This study investigated the presence of these viruses in rodents and assessed potential human exposure across diverse environmental and socio-economic contexts in Cambodia. The study was conducted in urban, semi-urban, and rural areas of Cambodia during the

Representative Rodent Models for Renal Transporter Alterations in Human Nonalcoholic Steatohepatitis.

Alterations in renal elimination processes of glomerular filtration and active tubular secretion by renal transporters can result in adverse drug reactions. Nonalcoholic steatohepatitis (NASH) alters hepatic transporter expression and xenobiotic elimination, but until recently, renal transporter alterations in NASH were unknown. This study investigates renal transporter changes in rodent models of NASH to identify a model that recapitulates human alterations. Quantitative protein expression by surrogate peptide liquid chromatography-coupled mass spectrometry (LC-MS/MS) on renal biopsies from N

Upregulated Angiotensin Ia Receptors in the Hypothalamic Paraventricular Nucleus Sensitize Neuroendocrine Vasopressin Release and Blood Pressure in a Rodent Model of Polycystic Kidney Disease.

INTRODUCTION: Angiotensin (Ang) II signalling in the hypothalamic paraventricular nucleus (PVN) via Ang type-1a receptors (AT1R) regulates vasopressin release and sympathetic nerve activity - two effectors of blood pressure regulation. We determined the cellular expression and function of AT1R in the PVN of a rodent model of polycystic kidney disease (PKD), the Lewis polycystic kidney (LPK) rat, to evaluate its contribution to blood pressure regulation and augmented vasopressin release in PKD. METHODS: PVN AT1R gene expression was quantified with fluorescent in situ hybridization in LPK and c

A short history of Lassa fever: the first 10-15 years after discovery.

This brief review is focused on the events surrounding the initial discovery of a new viral hemorrhagic fever in 1969 and the subsequent 10-15 years during which a substantial understanding of the disease was gained. In 1969, a series of sequential life-threating or fatal infections occurred among health care workers in Nigeria and the laboratory scientist who isolated and characterized the causative agent. The agent, Lassa virus was named after the geographical location of the first recognized human case. The new virus was shown to be related to lymphocytic choriomeningitis and to previously

Kala-azar in Darfur: Evidence for indigenous transmission in Al-Malha Locality, North Darfur, western Sudan.

BACKGROUND: Recent reports showed high numbers of visceral leishmaniasis cases in North Darfur, western Sudan. Due to a lack of previous studies, no information is available on local transmission of the disease in these areas. Therefore, a pilot entomological and epidemiological study was conducted in Al-Malha Locality during the year 2013, to investigate possibility of local transmission and places and times of the year where and when people contract the infection. METHODS: Kala-azar incidence data were obtained from records of Ministry of Health, North Darfur; Al-Malha rural hospital; and t

Could Heme Oxygenase-1 Be a New Target for Therapeutic Intervention in Malaria-Associated Acute Lung Injury/Acute Respiratory Distress Syndrome?

Malaria is a serious disease and was responsible for 429,000 deaths in 2015. Acute lung injury/acute respiratory distress syndrome (ALI/ARDS) is one of the main clinical complications of severe malaria; it is characterized by a high mortality rate and can even occur after antimalarial treatment when parasitemia is not detected. Rodent models of ALI/ARDS show similar clinical signs as in humans when the rodents are infected with murine Plasmodium. In these models, it was shown that the induction of the enzyme heme oxygenase 1 (HO-1) is protective against severe malaria complications, including

Assessment of the global pattern of genetic diversity in Echinococcus multilocularis inferred by mitochondrial DNA sequences.

The aim of this review was to assess our current knowledge on phylogeography and global genetic structure of Echinococcus multilocularis populations originating from rodents, wild canid hosts, and human. Six bibliographic databases were searched from 1990 to 2017, identifying a total of 110 publications. The cytochrome c oxidase subunit 1 (cox1) and cytochrome b (cytb) sequences of E. multilocularis from Asia, Europe, and North Americas were analyzed to estimate the diversity and neutrality indices, and genetic differentiation. A total of 69 (cox1, 36.7%) and 16 haplotypes (cytb, 19.2%) were g

Widespread arenavirus occurrence and seroprevalence in small mammals, Nigeria.

BACKGROUND: Lassa fever, killing thousands of people annually, is the most reported viral zoonotic disease in Nigeria. Recently, different rodent species carrying diverse lineages of the Lassa virus (LASV) in addition to a novel Mobala-like genetic sequence were detected within the country. Here, screening 906 small mammal specimens from 11 localities for IgG antibodies and incorporating previous PCR detection data involving the same populations, we further describe arenavirus prevalence across Nigeria in relation to host species and geographical location. METHODS: Small mammals were trapped

Survey and Phylogenetic Analysis of Rodents and Important Rodent-Borne Zoonotic Pathogens in Gedu, Bhutan.

Rodents are well-known reservoirs and vectors of many emerging and re-emerging infectious diseases, but little is known about their role in zoonotic disease transmission in Bhutan. In this study, a cross-sectional investigation of zoonotic disease pathogens in rodents was performed in Chukha district, Bhutan, where a high incidence of scrub typhus and cases of acute undifferentiated febrile illness had been reported in people during the preceding 4-6 months. Twelve rodents were trapped alive using wire-mesh traps. Following euthanasia, liver and kidney tissues were removed and tested using PCR
