We determined the cause of persistent eosinophilia in 128 Indochinese refugees for whom initial comprehensive routine screening had failed to yield an explanation. Intestinal parasitism with one or multiple organisms was the cause of eosinophilia in all but six of these patients. Hookworm and Strongyloides stercoralis were among the potentially pathogenic organisms most frequently implicated (55% and 38%, respectively). There was no correlation between the age or sex of the patients and the type of infecting organism. We also confirmed the usefulness of a previously described serological test

Formation of a marked protective immunity against the challenge infection was found in the rats immunized with excretory/secretory (ES) products of Strongyloides ratti adult worms. Immunization by intraduodenal injection of ES products reduced both the fecal egg counts and the adult worm burden by subcutaneous inoculation of infective larvae and by an intraduodenal implantation. The duration of parasitism in the immunized rats, however, was not shortened compared with that of control rats. The normal migration of subcutaneously challenged larvae was not affected by ES product immunization. Int

Subcutaneous injection of the larvae is the almost universally adopted means of initiating experimental infections of skin-invading roundworms but, so far, the possibility that this procedure introduces artefacts of one kind or another has not been critically studied. Experiments described in this paper were used to compare the effect of (a) injection and (b) skin application, of a small, precisely counted ('exact') dose of larvae. Results with two strains of S. ratti showed that the same proportion of the dose developed to adults in the intestines of rats irrespective of the method. With the

The plasma corticosterone induced in the rat by the development of Strongyloides ratti or Trichinella spiralis reaches a sufficient level of intensity to determine reticulocytopenia. The latter is linked chronologically to the inhibition of parasitemia in Plasmodium berghei, which occurs when this protozoa develops at the same time as the Nematodes, and seems to be the causal factor. This hypothesis may be verified by replacing the helminths with the corticotropic action of A.C.T.H. which causes a decrease in the number of reticulocytes.

The pharmacodynamics of thiabendazole (TBZ) and its metabolite, 5OH-thiabendazole (5OH-TBZ), were studied in an anephric patient with Strongyloides stercoralis pneumonitis. No toxic manifestations were noted in the patient, and serum TBZ and 5OH-TBZ levels were comparable to those in eunephric patients. We conclude that thiabendazole, in the usual recommended dose of 25 mg/kg twice daily, given to patients with compromised renal function is reasonable and safe.

Symptomatic disease from Strongyloides stercoralis has been recognized for the first time in Trinidad. Five cases are reported, all showing clinical features suggestive of a sprue-like syndrome. Subtotal jejunal villous atrophy was seen in one case and partial villous atrophy in two. Three patients had laparotomies because of suspected partial intestinal obstruction. A sprue-like syndrome in certain Caribbean immigrants should arouse a suspicion of S. stercoralis.

Prenatal infection of pigs with Strongyloides ransomi occurred in 12% of 104 pigs and in 14% of 21 litters farrowed by 13 sows experimentally exposed to infective larvae as weanlings. Transmammary passage was observed in 38 of 39 litters studied. Milk samples obtained from 14 sows showed that larvae were usually shed in the colostrum within 24 hours after farrowing; however, larvae were recovered from samples of milk of sows up to 20 days after parturition. Larvae were recovered from milk samples obtained after each parturition up to the fourth. Prenatal infection in pigs was not detected afte

Strongyloidiasis is a soil-borne helminthiasis, which, in spite of the up to 370 million people currently estimated to be infected with its causing agent, the nematode Strongyloides stercoralis, is frequently overlooked. Recent molecular taxonomic studies conducted in Southeast Asia and Australia, showed that dogs can carry the same genotypes of S. stercoralis that also infect humans, in addition to a presumably dog-specific Strongyloides species. This suggests a potential for zoonotic transmission of S. stercoralis from dogs to humans. Although natural S. stercoralis infections have not been …
