T. brucei infection in mice causes generalized immunosuppression with multiple changes in the cells of the lymphoid tissue. Loss of B cell responsiveness to antigens and mitogens, and the induction of suppressive T-cells and macrophages, have been previously reported (Hudson, Byner, Freeman & Terry, 1976; Corsini, Clayton, Askonas & Ogilvie, 1977; Jayawardena & Waksman, 1977). In this study, purified B- or T-cell populations from infected mice have been tested functionally in vitro or in vivo by transfer into syngeneic irradiated hosts to separate the cells from trypanosomes or their products.

Particles which morphologically resembled murine leukaemia virus were detected by electron microscopy in the tissues (spleen, thymus, inguinal lymph nodes, bone marrow or pancreas) but not in serum or plasma pellets of untreated conventional New Zealand Black (NZB) mice aged 1–82 weeks. They were also found in the corresponding tissues of NZB mice which had been thymectomized shortly after birth. The presence of similar particles in the spleen, thymus or pancreas of conventional NZB embryos and, additionally, in the lymph nodes of NZB mice which had originally been introduced into a germ-free

OBJECTIVES: To describe a case of coincident Castleman's disease and myasthenia gravis that initially presented as rapidly progressive dysphagia and dysphonia and to review the unique pathophysiology of these two uncommon diagnoses.
METHODS: Case report and literature review.
RESULTS: Castleman's disease, angiofollicular or giant lymph node hyperplasia, is a rare benign lymphoid proliferation. Traditionally, the disease is classified based on histologic and clinical characteristics. Fewer than 10 cases with concurrent myasthenia gravis have been reported. Myasthenia gravis and thymic epithel

BACKGROUND: Thymoma is known to cause autoimmune neuromuscular disease. However, anti-glutamate receptor antibody limbic encephalitis (LE) with thymoma is relatively rare.
CASE PRESENTATION: A 68-year-old woman was admitted with progressive memory impairment and personality change. Brain magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) revealed high intensity in the bilateral limbic areas on T2-weighted fluid-attenuation inversion recovery (FLAIR) images. Chest computed tomography revealed a mass in the anterior mediastinum. Surgical resection of the tumor, which was consistent with a type B3 thymoma, result

INTRODUCTION: Azathioprine (AZA) is commonly used in myasthenia gravis (MG). Treatment may be prolonged, entailing significant risks and avoidable costs.
METHODS: We reviewed remission, relapse, and side-effect profiles in MG patients on AZA during treatment and after tapering off. We conducted an ambispective study and analyzed remission, relapse rates, and side-effect profiles in 117 MG patients on AZA.
RESULTS: Thirty-nine patients (33.3%) achieved remission, and 36 (30.8%) achieved complete stable remission (CSR), with a 33% relapse rate. No AZA side effects were seen in 95 (81%) patient

BACKGROUND: The purpose of this study was to clarify the relationship between the tumor infiltrating lymphocytes and clinical outcome in patients with thymic carcinoma.
METHODS: Tissue specimens from 32 patients who underwent surgical resection for thymic carcinoma were immunohistochemically analyzed for CD4, CD8 and CD20 expression.
RESULTS: Tumor-infiltrating lymphocytes were generally more abundant in the stroma. The patients with low CD4+ lymphocytes (p=0.037) and low CD20+ lymphocytes (p=0.045) within tumor stroma showed poor survival. Furthermore, concurrent low levels of CD4+ and CD20

Totally cervical thymoma is extremely rare and usually arises from ectopic thymic tissue. We report a case of a B1 thymoma localized in the neck, misdiagnosed for a decade as a thyroid nodule. Fine needle aspiration biopsy led to a preoperative suspicion of the correct diagnosis. The tumor was resected intact through a cervical collar incision, along with the upper thymic horn from which it originated. A pathogenetic hypothesis was formulated.

We report a case of thymic carcinoma with massive pericardial effusion in a 74-year-old man. This patient with dyspnea was referred to our hospital because of pericardial effusion detected by echocardiography. A chest computed tomography and magnetic resonance imaging showed an anterior mediastinal mass measuring 8.0 x 5.0 cm with massive pericardial effusion. The mass lesion was suggestive of thymic carcinoma or invasive thymoma. Initially, he underwent pericardial drainage. The collected fluid was serous and yellow, and cytological examination found no malignant cells. The tumor with partial

In this report, we describe a case of a thymic carcinoma that developed in a thymic cyst, which was resected by video-assisted thoracic surgery (VATS). Chest radiography of a 68-year-old Japanese woman revealed an abnormal shadow. She was asymptomatic with normal physical examination findings. Chest computed tomography demonstrated a well-confined cystic mass that measured 4 cm in diameter occupying the anterior mediastinum. Based on these findings, a thymic cyst was suspected. It was completely resected by VATS. The excised cyst was multiloculated with a partially thick wall. Microscopic exam

It is very rare for both myasthenia gravis and aplastic anemia to be complicated with a thymoma. A 74-year-old female was diagnosed to have aplastic anemia with pancytopenia and systemic myasthenia gravis with severe restrictive respiratory dysfunction. Chest CT showed a 5-cm diameter thymoma. After platelets and packed red blood cells were transfused before surgery, an extended thymothymectomy was performed with a bilateral thoracoscopic approach. The thymoma was noninvasive, stage I, and was classified as B1 according to the World Health Organization classification. After the operation, the …

Myasthenia gravis is the most prevalent of the diseases of the neuromuscular junction in children. The most common clinical finding is ptosis, although ophthalmoplegia and facial weakness are commonly present. This paper reports juvenile myasthenia gravis in a 7-year-old boy with predominant facial muscle weakness without ophthalmoplegia and ptosis. This was detected post-operatively after adenotonsillectomy, as there was severe respiratory distress. Prompt diagnosis and treatment was life saving. A CT scan of the chest revealed thymoma. After the surgical removal of the thymoma, the child has

We have shown that autoallergic sialadenitis develops in C3H/He (H-2k) mice thymectomized 3 days after birth and then immunized at 4 or 6 weeks of age with a homogenate of the submandibular salivary gland emulsified in Freund's complete adjuvant. Significant inflammatory changes did not develop in other inbred strains, such as BALB/c (H-2d), and C57BL/6 (H-2b) mice, examined by the same experimental protocol, or in the control groups, i.e. animals thymectomized at day 3 but not immunized, and animals not thymectomized but immunized. The cellular infiltrates observed in C3H/He mice with sialade

Mice thymectomised at 3-4 weeks of age and subsequently given whole-body irradiation (9 Gy) under cytosine arabinoside cover (TAR mice) provide an alternative model to the athymic nude (nu+/nu+) mouse for studying the biological characteristics of tumour xenografts. In the present study we have evaluated the repopulation events in the bone marrow and spleen following whole body irradiation of TAR mice, and analysed immune competence up to 98 days following irradiation. Repopulation of both bone marrow and spleen was evident in the weeks following whole body irradiation, and an initial increase

Evidence is presented that the in vivo differentiation of B cells expressing X-linked immunodeficiency (xid) is controlled by mature T cells. Normal (C57BL/6 X CBA/J)F1 mice were thymectomized (ATx), heavily irradiated, and reconstituted with CBA/N (xid) or CBA/Ca (nondefective) marrow. In contrast to sham-operated mice, ATx recipients of xid marrow showed an almost total absence of Ig+ B cells in lymph nodes (LN) and thoracic duct lymph at 2 mo post-reconstitution ; B cells were markedly reduced in the spleen in some mice but only moderately in others. Addition of mature T cells soon after ma

The presence of lymphocytes in chronic granulomatous inflammations is frequently thought to indicate that thymus-dependent cellular immune mechanisms are involved in the pathogenesis of such processes. Therefore, in the present studies, a model of a granulomatous heaptitis (induced by heat-inactivated group A streptococci) was used to determine whether liver granulomata, consisting of macrophages and lymphocytes, could also be evoked in neonatally thymectomized or in congenitally thymus-deficient nude mice. The morphological (light and electron microscopical, immunohistological) investigations
