Guillain-Barre syndrome (GBS) is a life-threatening immune-mediated acute inflammatory polyneuropathy and is associated with various antecedent infections. Its association with tuberculosis is very uncommon with only a handful of cases being reported in the literature. It's association with tuberculous meningitis is even more scarce with only one case reported in literature till date. We report a 40-year-old lady with GBS associated with tuberculous meningitis. GBS was confirmed with clinical examination and nerve conduction studies.

BACKGROUND: CVJ tuberculosis is a described entity requiring challenging ways of management. Severe neck pain, causing restricted neck movements and torticollis, is a characteristic presentation of neurologically asymptomatic suboccipital Pott's disease.
CASE DESCRIPTION: Two patients with unusual CVJ tuberculosis form the basis for the present communication. The first patient presented with tubercular otitis media, causing progressive erosion of the petrous part of temporal bone, and destruction of the occipital condyle, along with the lateral mass of atlas, leading to CVJ instability. This

BACKGROUND: Spontaneous intracranial hypotension (SIH) is recognized with increasing frequency. A throbbing headache occurring or worsening in the upright position and improving after lying down, a so-called 'orthostatic headache', low cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) pressure, and diffuse pachymeningeal enhancement on brain magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) are the major features of the classic syndrome. These patients, who are admitted with fever, headache, and CSF findings revealing lymphocytic pleocytosis, elevated protein concentration, normal glucose levels, and negative culture results, are pro

Cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) analysis is of utmost importance to establish an early diagnosis of central nervous system (CNS) infections and to start appropriate therapy. The CSF white cell count, lactate concentration and total protein levels are usually available very quickly even from non-specialized laboratories and the combination of these parameters often provides sufficient information for decision-making in emergency cases. It is, however, not always possible to identify the underlying infective agent despite further CSF analyses, such as bacterial and fungal staining, evaluation of the b

With the onset of the human immunodeficiency virus pandemic, the incidence of tuberculosis, including central nervous system (CNS) tuberculosis, has increased in developed countries. It is no longer a disease confined to underdeveloped and developing countries. The imaging appearance has become more complex with the onset of multidrug-resistant tuberculosis. Imaging plays an important role in the early diagnosis of CNS tuberculosis and may prevent unnecessary morbidity and mortality. This article presents an extensive review of typical and atypical imaging appearances of intracranial tuberculo

OBJECTIVE: The records of 62 patients with clinical and radiographic evidence of vertebral osteomyelitis and positive bacteriological diagnosis, seen between 1979 and 1996, were reviewed in order to gather data on the epidemiology and the clinical pattern displayed by patients with this condition in northern Spain.
RESULTS: Staphylococcus aureus (15 cases), Mycobacterium tuberculosis (15 cases) and Brucella melitensis (13 cases) were the microorganisms most frequently found in our patient series. After improvement of the sanitary and hygienic control of food products, the role of Brucella mel

We present 16 cases of benign extramedullary tumors of the foramen magnum region who were operated on between the years 1984 and 1992. On admission, no case was neurologically intact and over 50% had had symptoms for more than 1 year. Nine patients had erroneous diagnoses initially. CT myelography and magnetic resonance (MR) imaging were the most appropriate diagnostic tools in visualizing tumors of this region. All operations except one, were performed by the posterior approach without surgical mortality. Histopathological examination revealed 8 meningiomas, 6 neurinomas, one tuberculous absc

External skeletal fixation is a well-known tool in the management of infection of long bones. However, the application of external skeletal fixation in the treatment of spinal infection has not been previously reported. We have used percutaneous external spinal fixation (PESF) for the treatment of osteomyelitis of the spine in 23 patients since 1981. The treatment consists of percutaneous vertebral biopsy for bacteriologic diagnosis, installation of a suction/irrigation system into the intervertebral disk space, and posterior stabilization (and reduction if indicated) with an external fixator

It has been suggested that technetium 99m nanocolloid is as effective an inflammatory radiopharmaceutical as indium 111 leucocytes. This study compares the efficacy of 99Tcm nanocolloid and 111In leucocytes in the detection of orthopaedic infection in 19 patients with a high clinical suspicion of infection. The two scintigrams were performed within 24 h of each other. A scintigram was considered positive where there was an increase in tracer uptake at the site of interest. Concordance rate of 73% was achieved. The numbers of false positives with 111In leucocytes and 99Tcm nanocolloid were thre

PURPOSE: The study of the interrelation between hip and spine disorders is gaining increasing importance in the last years, but the link between Hip Osteoarthritis (HOA) and Low Back Pain (LBP) remains still unclear. Aim of the study is to assess the relationship between Femoral Neck Anteversion (FNA), LBP, and spinopelvic parameters in patients undergoing Total Hip Replacement (THR) for unilateral severe primary HOA.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: 91 patients were recruited. Inclusion criteria were: grade 5 or 6 unilateral HOA, according to Turmezei, and Harris Hip score (HHS) <60. Exclusion criteri

Alpha-lipoic acid (alpha-LA) is a neuroprotective metabolic antioxidant that has been shown to cross the blood brain barrier. We tested whether alpha-LA is capable to prevent MOG35-55-induced experimental autoimmune encephalomyelitis (EAE), an established model of multiple sclerosis (MS). Daily oral administration of alpha-LA, starting at the time of immunization, significantly prevented EAE progression as compared to control mice. This was associated with a reduction of CNS infiltrating T cells and macrophages as well as decreased demyelination. We then tested alpha-LA in a therapeutic protoc

Diseases such as multiple sclerosis and Guillain-Barré syndrome are characterized not only by widespread loss of myelin from nerve fibres, but also by widespread inflammation in the central and peripheral nervous systems, respectively. While the demyelination alone is sufficient to block conduction and thereby cause symptoms, there is increasing evidence that the inflammation may also contribute significantly to the conduction block, although the mechanisms are not understood. Nitric oxide is an important inflammatory mediator which is elevated within the central nervous system in multiple scl

OBJECTIVE: To explore the application value of 3D printing technology in preoperative surgery plan and intraoperative auxiliary operation for adult kyphoscoliosis deformity.
METHODS: The clinical data of 12 adult patients with kyphoscoliosis deformity treated from September 2017 to January 2019 were retrospectively analyzed. There were 3 males and 9 females, aged from 21 to 63 years old with an average of (47.67±13.32) years old. Among them, 4 cases were congenital kyphoscoliosis, 2 cases were old tuberculosis thoracolumbar kyphosis ; 2 cases were idiopathic kyphoscoliosis, 4 cases were degen
