Impaired sequence learning in dystonia mutation carriers: a genotypic effect.

Abnormalities in motor sequence learning have been observed in non-manifesting carriers of the DYT1 dystonia mutation. Indeed, motor sequence learning deficits in these subjects have been associated with increased cerebellar activation during task performance. In the current study, we determined whether similar changes are also present in clinically manifesting DYT1 carriers as well as in carriers of other primary dystonia mutations such as DYT6. Additionally, we determined whether sequence learning performance and associated brain activation in these subjects correlate with previously describ

Three-dimensional stereotactic surface projection analysis of macaque brain PET: development and initial applications.

UNLABELLED: To characterize better the local brain functions of conscious rhesus macaques, we developed automated image analysis techniques for monkey PET images, examined the cerebral glucose metabolism of monkeys, and compared it with that of humans. METHODS: Glucose metabolic PET images from 11 monkeys were obtained using a high-resolution animal PET scanner after intravenous administration of FDG. T1-weighted MR images were obtained from 6 of the monkeys. Referencing a bicommissural stereotactic macaque brain atlas, we created a PET brain template using coregistered MR images. Each indivi

Effects of acupuncture on brain function in patients with depression: A meta-analysis of functional magnetic resonance imaging studies.

BACKGROUND: Depression poses a major global health burden. Many patients exhibit treatment resistance or experience intolerable side effects with standard therapies. Acupuncture shows promise as an adjunctive therapy for depression, but its neurobiological mechanisms remain incompletely understood. METHODS: We conducted a coordinate-based meta-analysis to identify consistent patterns of acupuncture-induced neuroplastic changes in patients with major depressive disorder, quantified via resting-state functional magnetic resonance imaging measures of regional homogeneity and amplitude of low-fre

Quantitative Susceptibility Mapping with Source Separation in Normal Brain Development of Newborns.

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Quantitative susceptibility mapping is an emerging method for characterizing tissue composition and studying myelination and iron deposition. However, accurate assessment of myelin and iron content in the neonate brain using this method is challenging because these 2 susceptibility sources of opposite signs (myelin, negative; iron, positive) occupy the same voxel, with minimal and comparable content in both sources. In this study, susceptibilities were measured in the healthy neonate brain using susceptibility source separation. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Sixty-nine health

MR Imaging Findings in Anti-Leucine-Rich Glioma Inactivated Protein 1 Encephalitis: A Systematic Review and Meta-analysis.

BACKGROUND: Antibodies against leucine-rich glioma inactivated protein 1 (LGI1) constitute a common form of autoimmune encephalitis. On MR imaging, it may show T2 FLAIR hyperintensities of the medial temporal lobe (T2 FLAIR-MTL), involve the basal ganglia, or be unremarkable. PURPOSE: We performed a systematic review and meta-analysis to obtain prevalence estimates of abnormal findings on MR imaging in anti-LGI1 encephalitis. A human brain map of the LGI1 microarray gene expression was derived from the Allen Human Brain Atlas. DATA SOURCES: PubMed and Web of Science were searched with the te

Cerebral cortex functional reorganization in preschool children with congenital sensorineural hearing loss: a resting-state fMRI study.

PURPOSE: How cortical functional reorganization occurs after hearing loss in preschool children with congenital sensorineural hearing loss (CSNHL) is poorly understood. Therefore, we used resting-state functional MRI (rs-fMRI) to explore the characteristics of cortical reorganization in these patents. METHODS: Sixty-three preschool children with CSNHL and 32 healthy controls (HCs) were recruited, and the Categories of Auditory Performance (CAP) scores were determined at the 6-month follow-up after cochlear implantation (CI). First, rs-fMRI data were preprocessed, and amplitude of low-frequenc

Altered functional connectivity of the primary motor cortex in tremor dominant and postural instability gait difficulty subtypes of early drug-naive Parkinson's disease patients.

BACKGROUND: The primary motor cortex (M1) is an important hub in the motor circuitry of Parkinson's disease (PD), but the subregions' function and their correlation to tremor dominant (TD) and postural instability and gait disturbance (PIGD) with PD remain unclear. This study aimed to determine whether the functional connectivity (FC) of the M1 subregions varied between the PD and PIGD subtypes. METHODS: We recruited 28 TD patients, 49 PIGD patients, and 42 healthy controls (HCs). M1 was divided into 12 regions of interest using the Human Brainnetome Atlas template to compare FC among these g

Visuomotor Adaptation Brain Changes During a Spaceflight Analog With Elevated Carbon Dioxide (CO2): A Pilot Study.

Astronauts on board the International Space Station (ISS) must adapt to several environmental challenges including microgravity, elevated carbon dioxide (CO2), and isolation while performing highly controlled movements with complex equipment. Head down tilt bed rest (HDBR) is an analog used to study spaceflight factors including body unloading and headward fluid shifts. We recently reported how HDBR with elevated CO2 (HDBR+CO2) affects visuomotor adaptation. Here we expand upon this work and examine the effects of HDBR+CO2 on brain activity during visuomotor adaptation. Eleven participants (34

Suboptimal maternal diets alter mu opioid receptor and dopamine type 1 receptor binding but exert no effect on dopamine transporters in the offspring brain.

Birthweight is a marker for suboptimal fetal growth and development in utero. Offspring can be born large for gestational age (LGA), which is linked to maternal obesity or excessive gestational weight gain, as well as small for gestational age (SGA), arising from nutrient or calorie deficiency, placental dysfunction, or other maternal conditions (hypertension, infection). In humans, LGA and SGA babies are at an increased risk for certain neurodevelopmental disorders, including Attention Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder, schizophrenia, and social and mood disorders. Using mouse models of LGA (mat

Diffusion tensor magnetic resonance imaging for single subject diagnosis in neurodegenerative diseases.

Although magnetic resonance imaging is a standard investigation in neurodegenerative disease, sensitive and specific markers for the underlying histopathological diagnosis are largely lacking. This report presents evidence to indicate that corticobasal degeneration and progressive supranuclear palsy, in particular, might be identifiable at a single subject level with diffusion tensor imaging. Patients with clinical diagnoses of Alzheimer's disease, semantic dementia and non-fluent primary progressive aphasia (n = 9 each) were contrasted with control subjects (n = 26) with the diffusion tensor

Probabilistic anatomic mapping of cerebral blood flow distribution of the middle cerebral artery.

UNLABELLED: Probabilistic atlases are more representative of the population than single brain atlases. They allow anatomic and functional labeling of the results of group studies in stereotactic space and, hence, the automated anatomic labeling of individual brain imaging data. METHODS: In the current study, probabilistic maps of the blood flow distribution of the middle cerebral artery (MCA) were developed using the basal and MCA brain SPECT images. Twenty-nine patients (mean age +/- SD, 54.6 +/- 6.1 y) who previously received placement of a stent for MCA stenosis (right MCA stenosis, 15 pat

Altered caudate connectivity is associated with executive dysfunction after traumatic brain injury.

Traumatic brain injury often produces executive dysfunction. This characteristic cognitive impairment often causes long-term problems with behaviour and personality. Frontal lobe injuries are associated with executive dysfunction, but it is unclear how these injuries relate to corticostriatal interactions that are known to play an important role in behavioural control. We hypothesized that executive dysfunction after traumatic brain injury would be associated with abnormal corticostriatal interactions, a question that has not previously been investigated. We used structural and functional MRI

Functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) response to alcohol pictures predicts subsequent transition to heavy drinking in college students.

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Young adults show the highest rates of escalating drinking, yet the neural risk mechanisms remain unclear. Heavy drinkers show variant functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) blood oxygen level-dependent (BOLD) response to alcohol cues, which may presage increasing drinking. In this longitudinal study, we ascertained whether BOLD response to alcohol pictures predicted subsequent heavy drinking among college students. METHODS: Participants were 43 18-21-year-olds in the United States who underwent BOLD scanning and completed monthly substance use surveys over the foll

Brain and mood changes over 2 years in healthy controls and adults with heart failure and ischaemic heart disease.

AIMS: Heart failure (HF) has been associated with cognitive dysfunction, a high prevalence of mood disorders, and a relative loss of grey matter in several brain regions. This study aimed to determine if, compared with controls with and without ischaemic heart disease (IHD), adults with HF show evidence of progressive loss of cerebral grey matter, and whether morphological changes are associated with changes in cognition, depression and anxiety symptoms over a follow-up period of 2 years. METHODS AND RESULTS: This was a 24-month longitudinal study of 19 participants with systolic HF, 43 with
