Computed Tomography Angiography-Assisted Ovarian Vein Sampling for Diagnosing an Androgen-Producing Leydig Cell Tumor: A Case Report.

BACKGROUND: Ovarian Leydig cell tumors, rare androgen-producing neoplasms, may present with rapidly progressive virilization. Preoperative localization is frequently challenging, particularly when bilateral ovarian abnormalities coexist or radiologic findings are equivocal. To avoid unnecessary bilateral oophorectomy and preserve fertility in reproductive-aged females, accurate localization is crucial. CASE PRESENTATION: We describe the case of a 42-year-old reproductive-aged female who presented with hirsutism, voice deepening, amenorrhea, and biochemical evidence of severe hyperandrogenism.

Quantum-enhanced multimodal prognostic transformer for skin disease progression prediction and visualization.

Accurate classification and staging of skin diseases such as monkeypox, chickenpox, and measles are critical for timely clinical intervention, particularly in resource-limited settings. We present a proof-of-concept Quantum-Enhanced Multimodal Prognostic Transformer (Q-MPT) that integrates dermoscopic images with patient metadata, including age and lesion location, to predict disease type and progression stage jointly. The architecture combines a Vision Transformer backbone with a metadata fusion pathway and a lightweight quantum layer designed to enhance feature representation. To approximate

Failure modes and effects analysis for clinical implementation of online adaptive radiotherapy: A systematic review.

BACKGROUND: The accuracy of radiotherapy is limited by anatomical variations occurring over time scales ranging from sub-seconds to days. Online Adaptive Radiotherapy (OART) addresses this by enabling daily plan adaptation based on real-time imaging. While OART offers improved dose conformity, its dynamic, time-constrained workflow introduces novel failure modes that challenge traditional quality assurance protocols. PURPOSE: This study aims to synthesize the existing literature on Failure Modes and Effects Analysis (FMEA) for OART to systematically catalog risks and identify mitigation strat

Exploration of the feasibility of clinical application of phage treatment for multidrug-resistant Serratia marcescens-induced pulmonary infection.

Serratia marcescens (S. marcescens) commonly induces refractory infection due to its multidrug-resistant nature. To date, there have been no reports on the application of phage treatment for S. marcescens infection. This study was conducted to explore the feasibility of phage application in treating refractory S. marcescens infection by collaborating with a 59-year-old male patient with a pulmonary infection of multidrug-resistant S. marcescens. Our experiments included three domains: i) selection of the appropriate phage, ii) verification of the efficacy and safety of the selected phage, iii)

In Vivo Versus In Vitro Somatostatin Receptor Expression in Neuroendocrine Neoplasms: A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis of Correlation Studies.

Well-differentiated neuroendocrine neoplasms (NENs) are characterized by hyperexpression on the cell membrane of somatostatin receptors (SSTRs). The demonstration of SSTRs, mainly the subtype 2 (SSTR2), is the prerequisite for diagnostic and therapeutic strategies with radiolabeled somatostatin analogs (SSAs). SSTRs can be routinely demonstrated in vivo by SSA-positron emission tomography/computed tomography (SSA-PET/CT) and in vitro by immunohistochemistry (IHC). This systematic review and meta-analysis aimed to gather evidence from the available literature on the correlation between the in v

Stabilized designs of the malaria adhesin protein PvRBP2b for use as a potential diagnostic for Plasmodium vivax.

Plasmodium vivax is emerging as the most prevalent species causing malaria outside Africa. Most P. vivax infections are relapses due to the reactivation of the dormant liver stage parasites (hypnozoites). Hypnozoites are a major reservoir for transmission but undetectable by commercial diagnostic tests. Antibodies against P. vivax reticulocyte-binding protein 2b (PvRBP2b) are among the most reliable serological biomarkers for recent P. vivax infections in the prior 9 months and act as indirect biomarkers for risk of relapse. We sought to design stabilized variants of PvRBP2b, under stringent c

Computational screening and molecular modeling of probiotic-derived peptides targeting the conserved HR1 domain of SARS-CoV-2 spike protein.

Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome Coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2), the causative agent of the global COVID-19 pandemic, relies on its spike glycoprotein to mediate host cell entry via binding to human angiotensin-converting enzyme 2 (hACE2). The S2 subunit of the spike protein contains heptad repeat regions (HR1 and HR2) that form a six-helix bundle fusion core, a critical step for viral-host membrane fusion. This study aimed to computationally screen a library of 318 probiotic-derived bacteriocins to identify potential inhibitors targeting the conserved HR1 domain. Evaluation included historical v

Predictive bite force modelling of head and neck oncology patients for clinical mandibular reconstruction applications.

OBJECTIVE: Since the introduction of individualized planning using 3D technology, the necessity for an individualized predictive bite force model has become increasingly critical for optimizing functional rehabilitation, and for tailoring surgical interventions to each head and neck oncology patient's unique anatomical and biomechanical profile. Current predictive models often lack comprehensive predictors and robust statistical methodologies, limiting their clinical applicability. To overcome these challenges, a predictive model of head and neck oncology patients' maximum voluntary bite force

Association Between the Triglyceride-Glucose Index and Peripheral Artery Disease: A Meta-Analysis.

The triglyceride-glucose index, an indicator of insulin resistance, has emerged as a potential predictor of various cardiovascular diseases. However, the association between the triglyceride-glucose index and peripheral artery disease remains unclear. This meta-analysis sought to clarify the relationship between the triglyceride-glucose index and the incidence or prevalence of peripheral artery disease. A comprehensive search of the PubMed, Embase, and Web of Science databases was carried out to identify relevant observational studies published up to June 1, 2024. Inclusion criteria included s

scRCA: A Siamese network-based pipeline for annotating cell types using noisy single-cell RNA-seq reference data.

Accurate cell type annotation is fundamentally critical for single-cell sequencing (scRNA-seq) data analysis to provide insightful knowledge of tissue-specific cell heterogeneity and cell state transition tracking. Cell type annotation is usually conducted by comparative analysis with known data (i.e., reference) - which contains a presumably accurate representation of cell types. However, this assumption is often problematic, as factors such as human errors in wet-lab experiments and methodological limitations can introduce annotation errors in the reference dataset. As current pipelines for

Genetic risk of alcohol-related liver cirrhosis: Associations of PNPLA3, TM6SF2, and a two-variant polygenic risk score.

A minority of individuals who consume excessive alcohol develop cirrhosis. Variants in the patatin-like phospholipase domain-containing protein 3 gene (PNPLA3) and the transmembrane 6 superfamily member 2 gene (TM6SF2) have been previously identified as associated with alcohol-related cirrhosis (ALC). This study aimed to examine the variants of PNPLA3 and TM6SF2 and to develop and assess a polygenic risk score (PRS) for ALC. We enrolled 118 patients diagnosed with ALC and 131 control subjects, who were either abstainers or low-level alcohol consumers without evidence of liver disease. Genotypi

Systemic Arterial Aneurysms in Kawasaki Disease: An Important Evidence Gap.

Non-coronary artery systemic arterial aneurysms (SAAs) are rare and an under-reported sequelae of Kawasaki disease (KD). We hypothesize that practices regarding SAA screening and management vary widely among experts and published literature. A survey was sent to members of the International KD Registry regarding their experiences and practices with SAAs in KD patients. For comparison, a systematic scoping review was conducted using PRISMA methodology, from which 25 reports with 83 patients were included. Results from each were compared. Surveys were completed by 48 (56%) of 86 IKDR investigato

Fusion-ADiNet: a multi-level framework for enhanced diabetes and Alzheimer's disease detection using chimp-whale fusion estimation.

Rising cases of diabetes and AD are the two biggest health-related issues world-wide; this greatly hampers the quality of life among the afflicted persons. Early identification of diabetes most especially correlated with neurodegenerative conditions such as Alzheimer's guarantees early intervention and hence proper management. However, the existing approaches for disease detection have been suffering from a series of limitations in poor diagnostic accuracy, high computational complexity, and the lack of an effective model that could properly handle the intricate correlations between diabetes a
