Aspects of intestinal parasitism in villagers from rural peninsular India.

In 1977, a parasitological survey was undertaken of stool samples collected from 335 people from 5 villages in semi-arid regions of peninsular India. Stools, which were collected from various individuals in a stratified sample of 40 matched households from each village, were examined by standard diagnostic procedures. Eggs of Ascaris lumbricoides and protozoan cysts, which were identified on morphological grounds as belonging to Entamoeba spp., were most common. Other protozoan cysts were considered to be those of Balantidium coli, and eggs of hookworm and Hymenolepis nana were also observed i

Village and age based precision mapping of schistosomiasis and soil-transmitted helminths in Chevakadzi ward of Shamva district in Zimbabwe.

Schistosomiasis is earmarked for elimination as a public health problem, while morbidity control is a priority for soil-transmitted helminthiasis (STH) by 2030. To develop targeted interventions for the two diseases, micro-mapping and an understanding of disease transmission dynamics across different age groups are necessary. This study determined the age-stratified and ward-level prevalence of schistosomiasis and STH in Chevakadzi ward, Shamva district, Mashonaland Central province, Zimbabwe. A community-wide cross-sectional pilot study was conducted in June and July 2023 in all the 14 villag…

Prevalence of Coinfection with Malaria and Intestinal Helminths among School-Aged Children in Nwoya District, Northern Uganda: A Cross-Sectional Study.

There is dual endemicity of malaria and helminthic infections in low- and middle-income countries. Coinfection with both infectious diseases may have compounding negative effects on the health of school-aged children (SAC) in endemic areas. The prevalence of coinfection with malaria and intestinal helminths, including soil-transmitted helminths, Schistosoma mansoni, and Hymenolepis nana, was assessed among SAC in rural northern Uganda. A school-based cross-sectional study was conducted at four randomly selected schools from June 2 to June 10, 2025 in Nwoya District, Uganda. Children aged 5-18

Prevalence and risk factors of soil-transmitted helminths in humans and domestic animals in southern Côte d'Ivoire.

BACKGROUND: Soil-transmitted helminth (STH) infections are parasitic diseases caused by worms that infect humans and animals. According to the World Health Organisation, 1.5 billion people worldwide are infected, particularly in tropical and subtropical zones. This study aimed to assess the prevalence and risk factors of STHs for humans and animals in three health districts in southern Côte d'Ivoire. METHODS: From October 2022 to April 2023, cross-sectional studies were conducted in three health districts: Agboville, Dabou, and Jacqueville. Overall, 941 school-aged children and 285 domestic a

Prevalence of Intestinal Parasites and Associated Factors among Rural Populations in Ubon Ratchathani Province, Thailand.

Khong Chiam is located on the border between Thailand and Laos, with the Mekong River as a natural barrier. The main river, Mun, also flows through Khong Chiam to meet the Mekong River, making Khong Chiam a community that primarily relies on water for agriculture and fisheries. A variety of intestinal parasites are endemic in Khong Chiam. A survey of 1,423 residents from 35 villages located along the Mun and Mekong Rivers in Khong Chiam was conducted from April 2021 to April 2022. Stool examination using a modified formalin-ether concentration technique revealed a 10.2% prevalence of various i

Genome-Wide Protein Interaction Analysis in Parasitic Gyrodactylus Flatworms-Fish Hosts System and Drug Target Identification.

The host-parasite arms race involves complex molecular crosstalk mediated by protein-protein interactions (PPIs). Bioinformatic analyses can be used to predict both host-parasite PPIs and potential drug targets in parasite genomes, but high-quality genomic data remain scarce for parasitic monogenean flatworms. Herein, an experimental lineage of Gyrodactylus kobayashii (Monopisthocotylea: Gyrodactylidae) is set up on goldfish hosts and used to conduct phased genome assembly using long-range PacBio HiFi and Hi-C technologies. In silico analyses of genomes of three Gyrodactylus species identified

Infection with gut parasites correlates with gut microbiome diversity across human populations in Africa.

Soil-transmitted helminths (STH) are common in (sub)tropical regions and primarily affect impoverished populations. These parasites reside in the gut, where they interact with both the microbiota and host immunity. Clinical STH detection is laborious and often not performed within the context of gut microbiome studies. Here, we present a proof-of-concept study assessing whether fecal metagenome data could be used to assess STH infection, and to relate STH infection to microbiome features. We leveraged 310 gut metagenomes obtained from mother-child pairs in two different locations in Gabon: one

HIV-Helminth Co-Infections and Immune Checkpoints: Implications for Cancer Risk in South Africa.

South Africa has the highest HIV prevalence globally, often co-occurring with helminth infections in impoverished regions. The coexistence of these infections leads to immunological interactions, potentially enhancing oncogenesis by upregulating immune checkpoint molecules (ICs) among other effects. Notably, most ICs are overexpressed in cancer and correlated with its progression. Helminth infections trigger Th2-type immunity, increasing immunosuppressive M2 macrophages, regulatory T cells, and associated IC molecules. PD-L2 is reported to contribute to Th2-type immunity induced by helminth in
